Rocket League fell from the top spot of Steam's weekly best sellers chart for the first time since its launch, as Ark: Survival Evolved was able to retake peak position thanks to a discount offer.
Promotions meaningfully shook up the top five for the first time in nearly two months. Ark and Counter-Strike took advantage of their sales to finish one and two, respectively.
Rocket League dropped to third, pushing Grand Theft Auto V down one spot from its accustomed position over the last couple months, while new Left 4 Dead-themed content and a discount promotion for Zombie Army Trilogy had the game climbing up to round out the top five.
Former chart regular Payday 2 also had a good week, with its standard and GOTY editions both checking in on the top ten. From the full list:
- Ark: Survival Evolved
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Rocket League
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Zombie Army Trilogy
- Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
- H1Z1
- Payday 2
- Payday 2: GOTY Edition
- Planetary Annihilation: Titans

Windows 10's facial recognition is supposed to make it easy to sign into your PC while maintaining security, but just how good is it? Good enough that even your doppelganger might not get in, apparently. The Australian has conducted an informal test where it tried to fool Windows using sets of identical twins, and the software wasn't tricked once -- it had a problem logging in both twins in one instance, but it otherwise allowed only those individuals that had set up recognition in the first place. That was true even when the 'evil' twins attempted to spoof the camera by adjusting their hair or removing their glasses.

Windows 10 is facing some fierce resistance from a few of the most dedicated torrenting communities. As TorrentFreak reports, the private torrent tracker iTS has banned its members from using the operating system over what it considers to be "terrible" new anti-privacy policies. These stem largely from anew Microsoft services agreement which covers select Windows 10 apps and services such as Cortana, Skype and Xbox Live: "We may automatically check your version of the software and download software updates or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services, playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorized hardware peripheral devices."

Some 15 years ago, the retro arcade craze was starting to gain serious traction, and pictures of modified arcade cabinets running MAME started to appear. Eager to do something similar, I managed to get my hands on a relatively cheap Neo-Geo cabinet and modified it to run MAME as well as a bunch of home consoles. The controls were all genuine Happ controls running off stripped Sidewinder controllers, and the monitor was an actual arcade monitor, running off a video card that was capable of outputting signal at 15kHz. Time passed, things got boring, and I ended up selling the cabinet – with a subsequent case of seller’s remorse.15 years later, shortly after I ported FinalBurn Alpha to the Raspberry Pi, I started to consider building another cabinet. The same power that was then in a Pentium III now fits nicely in a Raspberry Pi, and the hobbyist electronics market is now in a state that hasn’t been seen since the 1980’s.

Want to make all your 5 year old son’s friends jealous? What if he told them he could make REAL volcanoes in his sandbox? Will this be the future of sandboxes, digitally enhanced with augmented reality?
It’s not actually that hard to set up! The system consists of a good computer running Linux, a Kinect, a projector, a sandbox, and sand. And that’s it! The University of California (UC Davis) has setup a few of these systems now to teach children about geography, which is a really cool demonstration of both 3D scanning and projection mapping. As you can see in the animated gif above, the Kinect can track the topography of the sand, and then project its “reality” onto it. In this case, a mini volcano.

Now that Windows 10 is finally out there many people are looking for the best laptop with the power to make the new OS shine. The sweet spot appears to be in $900-$1500 machines from Dell, Asus and HP. But Apple, the company that has been fighting Windows for ever, has other options for Windows 10: the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. According to InformationWeek there are many reasons to consider purchasing a MacBook as the next Windows machine, including design, reliability, performance, battery life, display quality and better keyboard. Also MacBooks have a higher resell value, retaining up to 50% of their price after five years.

Today Mozilla announced some big changes to its extension support. Their new addon API, WebExtensions, is mostly compatible with the extension model used by Chrome and Opera. In short, this means we'll soon see cross-platform browser extensions. They say, "For some time we've heard from add-on developers that our APIs could be better documented and easier to use. In addition, we've noticed that many Firefox add-on developers also maintain a Chrome, Safari, or Opera extension with similar functionality. We would like add-on development to be more like Web development: the same code should run in multiple browsers according to behavior set by standards, with comprehensive documentation available from multiple vendors."

The declining tablet market in Western Europe has finally started to stabilise, according to analyst IDC.
Total tablet shipments contracted annually by 1.2 per cent in Q2 2015, reaching 7.5 million units, which is one of the smallest declines since the downturn started at the beginning of 2014.
The dip was a result of weak demand for consumer tablets and an increase in interest for two-in-one devices. The drop in tablet shipments stabilised to 4.4 per cent, while growth for two-in-ones reached 71 per cent.
Daniel Goncalves, research analyst for personal computing at IDC, said: “The interest in two-in-ones that we observed in previous quarters is clearly materialising into corporate deployments and consumer purchases, especially among professionals and students.”
Apple and Samsung dominated the tablet marketplace in Europe according to IDC, while smartphone vendors including Alcatel and Huawei have also seen a steady growth.
But does this mean that tablet sales are finally starting to recover? Within the commercial market, tablets have increased by 50 per cent compared to the same quarter a year ago, with slate tablets taking the top spot as the preferred device for specific vertical functions.
Chrystelle Labesque, research manager for personal computing at IDC, added: “The vendor landscape in the tablet market remains very broad and while price and volume pressures were at first negatively impacting smaller players, some of them now seem to have established a better position, capturing specific local demands or segment needs at the expense of more dominant players.
“Apple and Samsung are both focusing a lot of attention on the commercial segment, and are capturing part of this increasing opportunity, while traditional PC manufacturers are also extending their solutions offer to this segment.”

Super-rigs with 16GB or even 32GB of RAM enjoy little gaming benefit over those with a gentle 4GB.
That’s according to Techspot, which took on the challenge of testing whether the ever increasing amount of RAM being installed in modern PCs is necessary for those wanting to indulge in high-end PC gaming.
The site used a hefty machine to test the presumption, housing a 4.0GHz Intel Core i7-6700K and Nvidia GeForce GTX 980. It tested a range of titles while at the same time running Chrome with a whopping 65 open tabs.
Despite this, Grand Theft Auto V dropped just one frame per second when dropping from 8GB to 4GB (56fps vs 55fps). 16GB offered no performance benefit at all. There were also minimal single-digit differences when running Batman: Arkham Knight while the results were the same across the board with F1 2015.
Note that generally 8GB is still regarded as the optimum amount of RAM for those who use their PCs for a range of tasks.
The upward trend in RAM usage among PC enthusiasts is nothing new, but it has certainly intensified in the post PS4 and Xbox One era where maxing out the performance of new titles is becoming close to impossible on even the most expensive PCs.

Rocket League remains ahead of the pack on Steam’s latest weekly top ten sellers, while its DLC release Supersonic Fury made its chart debut in eighth.
Like clockwork, Ark: Survival Evolved and Grand Theft Auto V finished behind the popular ‘cars playing soccer’ affair in the runner-up and third spots. The same could be said about Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’s weekly reservation of fourth place.
Pre-orders for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain have the title making the list for the second week in a row, though it dropped three spots to seventh.
Here’s the full list:
- Rocket League

- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- H1Z1
- Left 4 Dead 2

Agreeing to Windows 10’s End User Licence Agreement gives the software the right to automatically disable pirated games from a user’s computer or phone.
GameSpot picked up on an Alphr report that noticed the following amendment to section 7b of the Windows 10 EULA:
“[Microsoft] may automatically check your version of the software and download software update or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services, playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorised hardware peripheral devices.”
The implication is that using a Windows 10 PC or Windows phone grants Microsoft the right to scan systems for pirated games or dodgy hardware and disable them without notice.
How “counterfeit games” or “unauthorised hardware” are determined is unclear. Could this stretch as far as unlicensed game controllers? Could it also have implications for copied versions of non-games software such as Adobe or Office products?
Also of importance is the method through which a game is identified as being unofficial.

Microsoft is testing a new app called NewsCast, which makes a playlist of news story summaries and reads them to you, according to Neowin. The publication came across a page on the Microsoft Azure Web Sites domain that had the app for download. In it, the company mentioned that the program was created by the Bing team and is meant to make commutes more productive, since you can listen to playlist even while driving. Unfortunately, the download's no longer available, but Neowin managed to take some screenshots that you can see below the fold.

Do you recall the bad old days of PC games in the mid-2000s, when titles were loaded with copy protection that was not only a hassle, but horribly insecure? Well, Microsoft does -- and that could be a problem if you're trying to run some of those vintage games on Windows 10. The company notes that games which depend on some versions of SafeDisc and Securom DRM (digital rights management) aren't allowed to run on Windows 10 at all. That could mean that your dusty copy of Grand Theft Auto III, Battlefield 1942 or The Sims won't load. As Microsoft's Boris Schneider-Johne says, their DRM intrudes so deeply into your system that they introduce a "possible loophole for computer viruses." Sure enough, at least one of the concerns about burdensome copy protection proved true -- it was more of a nuisance to honest gamers than to pirates.

Microsoft has issued a critical update to patch up an Internet Explorer hole that can give hackers access to your system. Hackers could create websites capable of exploiting the zero-day vulnerability -- discovered by Google researcher Clement Lecigne -- and get you to click on the URL via email or instant messenger. They will then get the same user rights you have, making the flaw more dangerous if you have administrative access or if you're handling a server or a workstation. With admin powers, intruders can remotely install applications and steal your data.

When Sony announced that it was spinning off its PC business, many mourned the passing of the premium -- but not quite best-selling -- VAIO series. The company was reborn in Japan, focusing on far less PC models (only two at the start), and a Made In Japan ethic that stretched from design to manufacturing. Now the company says it plans to start selling its newest machines outside of its homeland. VAIO's Z Canvas PC will be available both online and some Microsoft stores across the US starting this October. Prices will start at $2,200, depending on specification options. In an interview with the WSJ, the new CEO Yoshimi Ota added that the company plans to sell a slimmer laptop with cellular capability-- a feature that occasionally appears in niche laptop models.
