NVIDIA's GRID service wasn't the be-all, end-all of its cloud gaming ambitions... if anything, the company was just getting started. The crew in Santa Clara has unveiled GeForce Now, an $8 per month subscription service that streams PC games to all of NVIDIA's Shield devices, ranging from the original handheldthrough to the Shield TV. It's still streaming at GRID's 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second, but you'll get a brand new interface with better parental controls. There are over 50 (mostly) major titles to start, including most of theBatman games (but not Arkham Knight), numerous Lego games and Ultra Street Fighter IV. You can buy other games outright, such as The Witcher 3, and there are promises of future games reaching GeForce Now as soon as they launch. The service goes live on October 1st in the US.

Microsoft's Windows 10 virtual assistant Cortana is getting even smarter today by integrating LinkedIn. If you're using Windows Mail and Calendar for meetings, you can now connect Cortana to your LinkedIn account, which will surface details about the people you're meeting with in Cortana's reminders. That includes information like photos (helpful if you're not good with faces), job titles and a quick link to their entire LinkedIn profile. Naturally, you'll also be able to send a LinkedIn request right from Cortana reminders. This is the sort of integration mobile mail and calendar apps have been including for years now, so it's not exactly new, but it'll still be useful for Windows 10 users. And it's also a fitting example of how third-party companies can tap into Cortana.

With the first ever version of Windows launching in 1985, Microsoft’s desktop operating system has seen no less than 12 iterations throughout the past 30 years.
The first ever OS, Windows 1 Series, was described as a ‘unique software that was specifically designed for the serious PC users’.
Its best feature can be considered the ‘point and click mouse’ function, which meant the user no longer had to type MSDOS commands and could simply select specific options using the mouse.
Skip ahead to 2015 and Windows 10 features Cortana – a personal voice assistant that can conduct web searches, set reminders, add calendar events and much more.

Elite: Dangerous has nabbed the top spot on Steam's latest weekly best-selling titles, thanks in large part to a featured discount promotion.
The game was able to surpass runner-up Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – which still appears to be selling stronger every week.
Last week's winner Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain finished behind the pair in third, while Grand Theft Auto V held its position in fourth.
New entries include Cities: Skylines' new After Dark expansion also made the list in fifth, along with horror developer Frictional's new title Soma in sixth.

The days of watered-down laptop graphics cards could soon be at an end.
Nvidia is bringing its flagship GTX 980 GPU to a number of notebook devices.
That’s right – the full-size, desktop GTX 980, rather than the laptop-friendly 980M offshoot that launched last year.
What this means in practice is while the 980M achieved around 70 to 80 per cent of its full-fat sibling, the laptops equipped with the GTX 980 will be able to harness the whole of the card’s hardware for gaming, video editing and so on.
That’s helped by the full 2048 CUDA core architecture of the component, unchanged from its desktop PC counterpart, as well as the overclockable nature of the card – an overclocking tool will accompany the new laptops.
The GTX 980 will offer 7Gbps of memory bandwidth, versus the 980M’s 5Gbps. Similarly, the 980 will come with four to eight phase power supplies, against the 980M’s three.
To help with cooling in the smaller form factor of a laptop, the 980 will have one change – a new custom-tuned fan. Each laptop will tweak the card’s formula and specifics to suit its manufacturer’s wants and needs.
To avoid draining battery life, the 980 will require that the laptop be plugged into the wall. On portable power, it will automatically drop its performance to match that of the 980M to conserve life.

Mozilla is rolling out Firefox 41 to desktop and Android users and says it's now the first browser to have built-in instant messaging. That feature only works on the desktop version for now, but lets you IM directly from a Hello video callwhether you're on Windows, Mac or Linux. Because Hello is WebRTC powered, you can chat with Chrome or Opera users once it's supported on those browsers. If you happen to use Firefox's chat (which Mozilla co-developed with Telefonica) instead of say, Skype, it could come in handy if you're traveling and using an internet cafe.

Samsung has just launched the 950 Pro, its first consumer SSD that puts vertical NAND (V-NAND) tech into a gumstick-sized M.2 PCI Express device. The result, as you might guess, is speed. The 512GB model, which costs a reasonable $350, can read at 2.5GB/s and write at 1.5GB/s, easily beating the company's last speed champ, the SM951 SSD. It's also Samsung's first mainstream drive to use NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express), an interface designed specifically for SSDs to help them sip less power and last longer. As a result, the 512GB model is warrantied to write up to 400TB of data. The drives use Samsung's 2nd-generation 32-layer V-NAND, not the 48-layer chips itrecently announced.

Toshiba has announced an upgraded version of its Chromebook 2, which is scheduled to ship next month. Compared to last year's, the company's new Chrome OS laptop will be available with 5th-generation (Broadwell) Intel Core i3 or Celeron processors -- both are geared toward performance, so you can expect this machine to be much snappier than its predecessor. Additionally, the refreshed Chromebook 2 features a backlit LED keyboard for the first time. What does carry over from the previous model is that great 13.3-inch, 1080p IPS display, an HD webcam, two USB ports (3.0, 2.0) and the option to add up to 4GB of RAM. Battery life rating, meanwhile, continues to be about nine hours, but hopefully those fresh processors will make Toshiba's Chromebook 2 last longer than before. It'll be available in October for $330 and $430 for the Celeron and Core i3 models, respectively.

Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 and its expansion Yuri's Revenge are currently free on EA'sOrigin.
Westwood's cult classic real-time strategy game is a part of EA's "On the House" promotion, which offers free games for a limited time.
Red Alert 2 launched 15 years ago, in 2000, to rave reviews. It's set in the early 1970s, with the Soviets and Allies as playable factions. And who can forget those live-action cutscenes?

The upcoming Steam Machines have finally been given an official release date, but will these devices score points with retailers and gamers? Jade Burke takes a look at what the machines have to offer the gaming industry…
In 2012, Gabe Newell CEO and PC developer for the video game firm Valve, branded the launch of Windows 8 a ‘catastrophe’ and vowed to deliver a device similar to a games console, designed specifically for living room gaming. That device is now known as a Steam Machine.
The orginal release date for Steam Machines was sometime during mid-2014, however, they will now launch later this year on November 10th 2015.
But, now that Windows 10 has launched with gaming in mind with DirectX 12 and the availability of more affordable desktops and GPUs, will there still be a place for Steam Machines?
Ian Edwards, account manager at distributor Spire Technology, thinks so: “With many new game titles and the launch of Steam Machines coming later this year, I think now is one of the best times for PC gamers.
“For those who are serious about gaming, nothing really beats the freedom of a PC or the benefits of a keyboard and mouse when gaming, but it will be interesting to see how the Steam Machine controller does versus a keyboard and mouse.”
So far, a string of Steam Machine partners have been announced along with their own systems approved by Valve including Alienware, ASUS ROG GR8S, Scan 3XS ST and the Nextbox.
Other retailers are also signing deals with Valve, including GAME, who has struck up an exclusive partnership to sell the controller and Steam Link streaming device in the UK and Spain. However, the firm is yet to announce whether it will stock the machines themselves.
But, others remain sceptical about another edition to the gaming console market, as YoYoTech’s MD CK, explains: “I don’t think Steam Machines are the solution – they’re just creating another console. I think Xbox and PlayStation are doing a fantastic job. Especially with Windows 10 coming out as a PC platform using all those Xbox games – what will Steam do that’s different?”
But this isn’t stopping retailers and resellers creating their own take on the Steam Machine, including Dino PC who is working on a custom case for a Steam Machine, while Ebuyer.com has revealed plans to develop a range of specialist gaming desktops.
A mouse and keyboard are also still popular with gamers, and if Steam Machines start to take off there is a concern these peripherals may take a downhill turn, but Michael Groom, UK MD for Cherry, remains positive: “The concept of the Steam Machine is great – but for some games, wired peripherals are a must.
“However, if current console gamers have a Steam Machine next to their Xbox or PlayStation in their bedroom, I would hope that peripherals will be on the increase and Cherry will be able to take a slice of the pie.”
But until these new machines hit the retail space, we will have to wait and see how popular they will be.

Microsoft has released an update for its orphaned Windows RT 8.1 OS that gives it a Windows 10-like Start menu, according to users who've downloaded it. That's good news for owners of the original Surface and Surface 2 RT hybrid laptops, or those who bought RT devices like the Asus Vivo Tab RT and Dell XPS 10. The feature isn't exactly the same as it is on Windows 10, as it lacks the settings options, and the power-off icon has been moved to the top right. There's no news of any other features, because the update wasn't accompanied by a Microsoft announcement.

Mr. Torvalds has released Linux 4.3-rc1 this weekend. He characterized the release as "not particularly small — pretty average in size, in fact. Everything looks fairly normal, in fact, with about 70% of the changes being drivers, 10% architecture updates, and the remaining 20% are spread out." There are a number of new user-facing features including stabilized Intel "Skylake" processor support, initial AMD R9 Fury graphics support, SMP scheduler optimizations, file-system fixes, a reworked open-source NVIDIA driver, and many Linux hardware driver updates.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Mad Max lead this past week's Steam top ten sellers chart.
The Phantom Pain holds its position from one week earlier, while Mad Max moved up a spot from third to second following its launch week. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt finished behind the pair in third, with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Grand Theft Auto V rounding out the top five.
Regular chart-toppers Rocket League and Ark: Survival dropped a bit off their typical pace, but remained within the top ten in sixth and seventh respectively.

Taking the idea of "automatic updates" to the extreme, Microsoft has confirmed that it's downloading Windows 10 installation files on PCs just in case you might want to upgrade, The Inquirer reports. As a Microsoft rep tells it, the company is placing the files on computers that have opted into automatic updates through Windows Update. Normally that just entails getting a few security fixes every few weeks, but the Windows 10 installer can take up around 3.5GB and 6GB on your system. That's a lot of precious hard drive space for something you might not even want (though it's definitely worth upgrading). Microsoft probably figures it's worth preloading files to make the Windows 10 installation faster, but it seems like a boneheaded move when storage is scarce on some machines (especially if you're stuck with flash memory or a small SSD). It makes more sense for Microsoft only to preload the files after you've decided to "reserve" the free upgrade.

It's been a long time coming, but the second StarCraft II expansion is nearly here: Blizzard has announced that Legacy of the Void will arrive on November 10th. As with both the original game (Wings of Liberty) and Heart of the Swarm, this latest title will focus primarily on one species. In this case, you're reuniting the mysterious Protoss so that they can confront a dire threat and reclaim their homeworld. You'll also get new units for all factions, and there are fresh multiplayer modes that include shared bases and objective-based co-op. It's not really a revolution, then. However, this also represents the end of theStarCraft II story line -- if you're determined to see the conclusion to Blizzard's five-year sci-fi saga, you'll want to check this out.

Microsoft will host an event featuring new Windows 10 devices plus remarks from CEO Satya Nadella on October 6th in New York City. The briefing (fittingly) begins and 10AM ET. Microsoft is light on specifics, but it promises Windows 10 hardware, so we might get a closer look at things like the Surface Hub, a product we recently learned will start shipping to customers on January 1st, 2016. That one is priced between $7,000 and $20,000. Plus, there's always the Surface tablet, Lumia smartphones, Xbox One and PC devices, too. And we can't forget about HoloLens, Microsoft's augmented reality headset.

A big part of what's won Chrome a lot of converts is how much faster it is over the competition. That speed comes at a price, though: The web browser is notoriously a resource hog (especially if you have a dozen or so tabs open at once) and it dramatically cuts into battery life. As Google tells it, the latest version of the browser will help absolve those sins a bit. New tweaks include restoring only the most frequently used tabs should it detect that your machine is precariously low on resources, and a way of detecting when a page isn't busy with something else and using the free processor cycles to clean up idle memory.

WhatsApp has grown tremendously from the time Facebook acquired it in 2014 for $19 billion. The messaging app's founder, Jan Koum, has justannounced on Facebook that the service has reached 900 million monthly active users (MAU). That means it has gained 100 million new ones in less than five months since Koum celebrated reaching 800 million subscribers in April. That number isn't too far off from its parent company's either, which announced 1.49 billion MAUs as of June this year. In comparison, Facebook's own Messenger app reached 700 million MAUs in June, mostly due to its split from the social network's main application. Considering the app has beeninstalled at least a billion times on Android, the new user count isn't that surprising. We just hope its continued success doesn't lead to even moredivorces in Italy.

I'm a Mac guy — have been ever since the '80s. When Windows 95 was released 20 years ago, I was among those who sneered that "Windows 95 is Macintosh 87." But now, as I type these words on a shiny new iMac, I can admit that my UI — and indeed the computing landscape in general — owes a lot to Windows 95, the most influential operating system that ever got no respect. ITWorld reports: "... even though many techies tend to dismiss UI innovation as eye candy, the fact is that the changes made in Windows 95 were incredibly successful in making the the system more accessible to users -- so successful, in fact, that a surprising number of them have endured and even spread to other operating systems. We still live in the world Windows 95 made. When I asked people on Twitter their thoughts about what aspects of Windows 95 have persisted, I think Aaron Webb said it best: 'All of it? Put a 15 year old in front of 3.1 and they would be lost. In front of Windows 95 they would be able to do any task quickly.'"
