The MameDev Team have released a new version of their excellent Arcade Emulator for PC that plays thousands of Arcade Games, the News is lengthy, so here it is in full:
Happy new year from the MAME team! To help you celebrate, we’re unwrapping an extra-special release this month, with enough improvements to put anyone in a good mood. The exciting news that’s got people talking is that protected microcontrollers (MCUs) from a number of games have been read out and hooked up in MAME. This gives real, emulated sound in Toaplan’s Vimana, Fire Shark (also known as Same! Same! Same!) and Teki Paki, proper emulation of Tokio/Scramble Formation, M-chip emulation for Taito Extermination, Dr Toppel and Plump Pop, MCU emulation for Sega Altered Beast and Golden Axe, and partial sound in World Beach Volley. There’s more coming on this front, so stay tuned for upcoming releases!
MAME 0.181 also marks the debut of Votrax SC-01 emulation in MAME, based on reverse-engineering die photographs. The digital section should be pretty much perfect, although there are still some issues in the analog section (plosives don’t sound quite right). Overall, it’s a huge improvement in Votrax speech synthesis emulation, and a great leap forward in our understanding of how the hardware works. It also means speech samples are no longer required for a number of games.
Building on the ARM improvements in last month’s release, we now have working floppy drives and sound in the Acorn Archimedes driver, and default NVRAM images for the US Aristocrat Mark 5 games. This greatly increases the amount of RISC OS software you can try out, improves the gameplay experience in the Archimedes-based arcade games, and allows you to play the Aristocrat gamblers without having to make your way through the setup process first.
MAME’s discrete netlist emulation library has been expanded substantially in this release, including some new classes of devices like ROMs, and many newly supported logic chips. This will make it substantially easier to emulate arcade games which used discrete TTL logic, and as a test of this new functionality, the TTL video board from the Hazeltine 1500 intelligent terminal is now emulated using the netlist system. There’s ongoing work in this area involving multiple developers, so look out for more exciting updates in this space.
We’ve fixed some fairly significant bugs, including one preventing the debugger from working on Linux or Mac with drivers that use a dynamic recompiler core, and one that could cause MAME to crash when using BDF fonts. The internal UI should be more efficient if you’re using icons now, and issues with spurious key repeats should be reduced. The Beezer driver has been rewritten and should be improved overall.
There are quite a few newly dumped arcade games in this release, including Eeekk!, Simpson Junior (a Korean bootleg of J. J. Squawkers), Power Flipper Pinball Shooting (an updated version of Grand Cross), a version of Momoko 120% with English text, Miss World 2002 (an adult Qix game), and alternate versions of The NewZealand Story, Real Bout Fatal Fury, Space Dungeon, Flicky and Turbo Force. The Apricot PC and Xi are now working, further increasing MAME’s coverage of DOS-based computers that aren’t IBM-compatible. You can also play with the COP44L version of Entex Space Invader, and Mattel Funtronics Jacks and Red Light Green Light.
There are far too many improvements to list here, including lots of fixes for graphics and flip screen issues, but you can read all about it in the whatsnew.txt file, or grab the source or Windows binaries from the download page and start playing.

Xbox has announced that it is acquiring MinecraftEdu and releasing a new edition of Minecraft for schools.
Entitled Minecraft: Education Edition, the title is being made in collaboration with Teacher Gaming. It is currently set for release this summer. The title is going to be building upon what MinecraftEdu does already, with a broader set of features.
MinecraftEdu launched in 2011. It’s a version of Mojang’s title that is built with the classroom in mind.
When MCV sat down with Mojang COO Vu Bui at Minecon this year, he said that there was ‘no limit’ to Minecraft Education.
“One of the reasons Minecraft fits so well in the classroom is because it’s a common, creative playground,” said Vu Bui, COO of Mojang on EducationMinecraft.net.
“We’ve seen that Minecraft transcends the differences in teaching and learning styles and education systems around the world. It’s an open space where people can come together and build a lesson around nearly anything.”

Samsung likes being the first kid on the block with new memory products, and has done it again with a type of DRAM. The so-called HBM2 modulescan power through data at the rate of 256GBps (with a capital "B"), making them a whopping seven times faster than the best DDR5 chips on the market. The company said the 20-nanometer chips are mainly aimed at server manufacturers who are willing to spend for the latest toys. However, they will also allow NVIDIA and AMD to accelerate performance (and reduce power consumption) significantly on upcoming graphics cards.
Samsung is building 4GB modules with four layers of 8-gigabit cores, but plans on introducing 8GB products with eight stacks by the end of the year. The company said that "by specifying [the chips] in graphics cards, designers will be able to enjoy a space savings of more than 95 percent compared to GDDR5 DRAM." That means NVIDIA and AMD can build more size-efficient cards that run cooler and faster -- and therefore play Crysismore smoothly. The 4GB chips Samsung is building now could end up in next-gen consumer cards, while 8GB models are more likely to end up in high-end NVIDIA Kepler and AMD FIrePro workstations

January 18th, 2016, 22:09 Posted By: wraggster
As the days pass, we draw closer to a potentially seismic change in the PC gaming space - the arrival of Virtual Reality experiences, brought to life via the Oculus Rift and HTC's Vive. And for many, one key question needs to be comprehensively addressed - whether their existing gaming PCs can handle the strenuous requirements of the VR experience. And if they don't, what hardware will need an upgrade.
There's a sense that there's a lot of conflicting information out there. First up, let's take a look at the Oculus minimum spec:
- Nvidia GeForce GTX 970/AMD Radeon R9 290 equivalent or greater
- Intel Core i5 4590 equivalent or greater
- 8GB+ RAM
- 2x USB 3.0 port
- HDMI 1.3 video output supporting a 297MHz clock via a direct output architecture
- Windows 7 OS or greater
Some say that less than one per cent of the gaming PCs out there can meet this specification, but it's certainly a good place to start from Oculus, certainly bearing in mind the GPU spec. Take a look at Steam's hardware survey - probably our best look into the hardware being used by core gamers - and the GTX 970 absolutely dominates. Indeed, there have been some months where that specific GPU has accounted for over five per cent of all Steam users. Only Nvidia's older GTX 760 gets close.
"The recommended spec will stay constant over the lifetime of the Rift," says Oculus. "As the equivalent-performance hardware becomes less expensive, more users will have systems capable of the full Rift experience. Developers, in turn, can rely on Rift users having these modern machines, allowing them to optimise their game for a known target, simplifying development."
There's just one problem. To run the same game at full-spec VR, we are looking at a colossal increase in pixel-throughput. As Nvidia's general manager of Shield, gaming and VR business, Jason Paul explained in a VentureBeat interview:
Digital Foundry VR PC build tips
When the time comes, we'll be putting together a comprehensive build list for Virtual Reality gaming, but right now, the lack of available software - and indeed hardware - means that any recommended set-up is going to be speculative at best. However, based on our benchmarking experience on a range of traditional gaming titles, we can put forward some ideas on how component choice may impact a VR build.
- USB 3.0: A lot of users trying theOculus Rift configuration tool havediscovered that their USB 3.0 throughput fails the test. We suspect that the firm's recommendation for the Haswell Core i5 as opposed to older, more popular chips may well be down to native USB 3.0 support in the surrounding architecture. To what extent this may actually be an issue, and whether it can be circumvented with an add-in USB 3.0 expansion card remains to be seen. HTC Vive's requirements here are also unknown right now.
- Lowest frame-rate is the key benchmark: VR requires a 90fps minimum but more importantly, it requires consistency. Bear that in mind when looking at CPU or GPU reviews.
- Core i7 beats Core i5: In our CPU-bound gaming benchmarks, we have observed that game engines using eight processing threads enjoy a performance boost on the Core i7 chips vs their i5 equivalents (even when overclocked). It seems that more threads has a particular impact on lowering stutter in CPU-bound scenarios, resulting in an improvement on lowest recorded frame-rates. This could help in a VR scenario, where sustaining 90fps at all costs is so important.
- Nvidia's DX11 driver is faster: We expect GPU to be the major limiting factor in VR gaming, but if CPU is an issue, Nvidia's DX11 driver has proven to be significantly faster than its AMD equivalent, exhibiting less stutter at higher frame-rates. DX12 and its open equivalent Vulkan are the future though, and although we are lacking software to really put these new APIs through their paces, all indications suggest that both AMD software and hardware is in excellent shape here.
- Faster RAM could help: Our recent tests with the Core i3 6100 and theCore i5 6500 have revealed that in CPU-bound gaming scenarios, faster RAM can make a difference, raising minimum frame-rates significantly on some titles. Be aware that faster RAM typically requires a more expensive Z87/Z97/Z170 motherboard to run at its maximum rated speed.
We'll stress again that these are just observations taken from our experiences in benchmarking RAM, graphics cards and CPUs on traditional PC games and until there's actual VR hardware available with retail software to test, the only real advice anyone can genuinely offer is: the faster, the better.
"If you look at your typical PC gaming experience, 90 per cent of the gamers out there play at 1080p. For a smooth experience you don't want to go below 30fps. Compare that to VR where the displays are about 2K, but you have to render closer to 3K, and you don't want to go below 90fps. It's about a sevenfold increase in raw performance to render for VR versus traditional PC gaming. You have to do that in less than 20 milliseconds from head rotation to what shows up on your display."

Microsoft today ended support for old versions of Internet Explorer, including IE8, IE9, and IE10, as well as Windows 8. For the browsers, the company has also released a final patch (KB3123303) that includes the latest cumulative security updates and an "End of Life" upgrade notification. In short, the final patch will nag Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 users to upgrade to Internet Explorer: A new tab will automatically open the download IE page. It doesn’t appear Microsoft has plans to push similar notifications for Vista, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2 users, but this isn’t too surprising: They can’t upgrade to IE11 or Edge without upgrading their operating system. While support for Windows 8 has ended, Windows 8.1 will have Mainstream Support until January 9, 2018 and Extended Support until January 10, 2023.

Joe_Dragon sends news from Microsoft about how the company will support Windows now and in the future. The company says PCs built with Intel's Skylake chip, and other new architectures in the future, will require the latest version of Windows for support. This doesn't take effect right away; Windows 7 and 8.1 will be supported on older chips until their planned end-of-life dates, in 2020 and 2023 respectively. They'll also be supported on a list of current Skylake devices for the next 18 months. After that, only the latest version of Windows will support integration between the operating system and new CPU features. "For example, Windows 10 will be the only supported Windows platform on Intel's upcoming 'Kaby Lake' silicon, Qualcomm's upcoming '8996' silicon, and AMD's upcoming 'Bristol Ridge' silicon." Microsoft also mentioned that for new supported systems, the company will "ensure all drivers will be on Windows Update with published BIOS/UEFI upgrading tools." The submitter adds, "Putting BIOS/UEFI updates in to the Windows 10 auto- / forced-update system may open Microsoft to paying $600-$1,000+ to replace broken laptops. If Windows tries to update BIOS/UEFI at a bad/risky time (like during power instability in a big storm), it could lead to an update loop or worse."

Were you hoping to get a new Windows PC in the office this year without having to move to Windows 10 in the process? You might not have much of a choice, unfortunately. Microsoft has revealed that, from now on, newer processors from AMD, Intel and Qualcomm will require the current version of Windows to get enterprise support. Don't expect that Kaby Lake-based workstation to run Windows 7 properly... or more likely, at all.
You'll have to be choosy about existing processors, too. Microsoft is drafting a list of Skylake-based processors that it'll support with Windows 7 and 8.1, but that program will only last until July 17th, 2017. After that, the corporate crowd will have to upgrade to Windows 10 to get any help. At least some of the newest business PCs from Dell, HP and Lenovo are poised to make the cut, if you're wondering what's safe to buy.
The new policy will help Microsoft create "deep integration" between Windows and the latest hardware. You should see those newer PCs getting more out of Windows 10 in the future, then. However, it also conveniently helps Microsoft tackle one of its biggest problems: getting companies to update Windows. Many enterprise customers cling to old versions of Windows for as long as possible, to the point where PC makers sometimes offer those versions on brand new systems. This probably won't be an option in the future -- your employer will have to embrace the latest version of Windows if it wants shiny new gear.

Intel has confirmed an in-the-wild bug that can freeze its Skylake processors. The company is pushing out a BIOS fix. Ars reports: "No reason has been given as to why the bug occurs, but it's confirmed to affect both Linux and Windows-based systems. Prime95, which has historically been used to benchmark and stress-test computers, uses Fast Fourier Transforms to multiply extremely large numbers. A particular exponent size, 14,942,209, has been found to cause the system crashes. While the bug was discovered using Prime95, it could affect other industries that rely on complex computational workloads, such as scientific and financial institutions. GIMPS noted that its Prime95 software "works perfectly normal" on all other Intel processors of past generations."

The various privacy concerns surrounding Windows 10 have received a lot of coverage in the media, but it seems that there are ever more secrets coming to light. The Threshold 2 Update did nothing to curtail privacy invasion, and the latest Windows 10 installation figures show that Microsoft is also monitoring how long people are using the operating system. This might seem like a slightly strange statistic for Microsoft to keep track of, but the company knows how long, collectively, Windows 10 has been running on computers around the world. To have reached this figure (11 billion hours in December, apparently) Microsoft must have been logging individuals' usage times. Intrigued, we contacted Microsoft to find out what on earth is going on.

Games sold over Steam generated over $3.5bn last year, according to analytics site Steam Spy.
The outlet – run by one Sergey Galyonkin – claims that 3,000 new games were released on the platform (up from 1,900 in 2014), and the number of concurrent users reached a whopping 12 million people.
That figure of $3.5bn is also purely game sales and does not include revenue from free-to-play titles or any downloadable content for games.
As well as some impressive topline figures, Galyonkin goes into some detail about how 2015 was for Steam.
Unsurprisingly, December was the biggest month for Steam in no short part thanks to the Winter Sale. $436,138,345 was generated in revenue for that month.
The second best month in 2015 was April, due to the launch of the long-awaited PC SKU of Grand Theft Auto V. $411,360,280 was generated in that month.
Rockstar’s crime title and Fallout 4 were the biggest titles of the year in terms of the year in terms of sales and revenue.

As you may recall, Microsoft has delivered KB3035583 as a 'recommended update' to users of Windows 7 and 8.1. What this update does is install GWX ("Get Windows 10"), a program which diagnoses the system to see if it is eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 10, and if so, asks the user if they would like to upgrade (though recently, the option to decline has been removed). Some users have gotten around this by editing Windows Registry values for "AllowOSUpgrade", "DisableOSUpgrade", "DisableGWX", and "ReservationsAllowed" in order to disable the prompt altogether. This advice wasendorsed by Microsoft on their support forums.
According to a report by Woody Leonhard at InfoWorld, the newest version of the KB3035583 update includes a background process which scans the system's Windows Registry twice a day to see if the values for the four aforementioned registry inputs were manually edited to disable the upgrade prompt. If they were, the process will alter the values, silently re-download the Windows 10 installation files (about 6 GB in total), and prompt the user to upgrade.

Pirates at the infamous Chinese hacking forum 3DM are complaining that recent PC games are simply too darn hard to crack, according to Torrent Freak. The problem is apparently Denuvo, a copy protection scheme that prevents tampering of the underlying DRM. Two recent games that use the scheme, FIFA 16 and Just Cause 3, have still not been cracked, despite appearing in early December. Based on the current pace of encryption tech, "in two years time I'm afraid there will be no free games to play in the world," said one forlorn pirate.
While hackers from 3DM did break an early Denuvo-locked title, Dragon Age: Inquisition, the tech has been improved over the intervening year. It's nearly unheard of for PC games to remain uncracked for more than a few weeks -- often, they're broken before they even go on sale. If the recent Denuvo games remain locked for much longer, pirates may give up and either buy them on Steam or Origin or move on to something else. Suffice to say, the gaming industry will be keeping a close eye on what happens.

December 16th, 2015, 23:01 Posted By: wraggster
Unlike the other gaming platforms we’ve been evaluating here at the end of the year, the PC’s been around for decades. Recently, the PC’s long legacy of openness and customisation has come into conflict with a mainstream that’s finally—finally—realised just how big of a deal PC gaming actually is.
By and large, the PC is in a great place. More PC games are coming out than ever, and most of them are even coming out at the same time as their console counterparts. As a result, the PC offers a front row seat to the industry’s heaviest hitters and cleverest indies. On top of that, the PC’s back catalogue is a formidable beast, a leviathan that even the most voracious players will never truly slay. New companies are polishing up and re-releasing classics like System Shock 2 and Baldur’s Gate as well, so incompatibility issues—while still present—are becoming less of a problem. (However, nobody’s been able to do that for No One Lives Forever yet, so actually I changed my mind; PC gaming is garbage.) You’ve also got more options than ever as to where you buy your games digitally, though Steam is pretty much a must.
“More,” as a concept, is among the sharpest double-edged swords. This year saw more games released on Steam—the biggest PC gaming service by a mile—than ever, many of which were… not super great. It’s a reflection of PC’s renewed relevance in the eyes of game-makers: everybody wants their game on services like Steam. While Valve has worked to improve tools that help people discover new games, plenty of high-quality stuff is still slipping through the cracks.
Moreover, programs like Steam Early Access see unfinished games make their way onto the service. Some, like dinosaur survival hit Ark: Survival Evolved, are great, but others launch in shoddy states and end up abandoned.
A handful of smaller games have still managed to rise to the top and become marquee PC attractions. In 2015, PC-first games like Ark: Survival Evolved, Cities: Skylines,Besiege, Undertale, and Darkest Dungeon go from relative obscurity to the top of the charts. They’re all must-plays, and many of them continue to grow and evolve thanks to updates and dedicated communities.
The PC modding scene both flourished and faltered in 2015. User-created additionstransformed big releases like Fallout 4, Grand Theft Auto V, The Witcher 3, andeven Star Wars Battlefront. They also added fascinating flavour to smaller games like Cities: Skylines, Ark: Survival Evolved, and Besiege. Oh, and they continued to keep all-but-abandoned games like Left 4 Dead 2 from completely going under.

When reviews of the Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 hit, it seemed like Microsoft would be riding a wave of positive publicity into the holiday season. We liked both devices, and while the Surface Book wasn't everyone's cup of tea, most reviews were also fairly positive. But things changed once they actually reached consumers. Some early buyers reported a variety of issues, including screen flickering, system instability and power problems. Those concerns prompted Microsoft to release several firmware and software updates within weeks (on top of a launch day fix), which helped with some issues. But they came too late to erase the idea that something was up with Microsoft's new hardware.
And one big issue remains for Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 owners: erratic power management. Some users are reporting that the devices simply don't go to sleep properly when you close their lids or put them into standby. Instead, they continue to drain power, which could be a nasty surprise if you don't bring your charger along. That's a particularly surprising issue for flagship devices in 2015 — it's something that's mostly been fixed by laptop makers over the past decade. Making things even worse, a Surface engineering manager noted earlier this month that the issue might not be fixed until 2016.
"We are focused on delivering a great experience to every Surface customer," a Microsoft spokesperson told Engadget. "We know a small set of Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 customers are experiencing issues and addressing that is a top priority for us. We have dedicated engineering teams working to get updates and fixes out as quickly as possible and we will continue to use our Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 support forums to share new information directly with our customers as it becomes available."
