With the launch of Windows 10 just around the corner, it seems some users may not be able to update their devices with the new operating system (OS) straight away.
When the OS launches on July 29th, Microsoft has revealed that not all devices will receive the update then, and instead it will be slowly scaling out updates.
Microsoft will ‘start notifying reserved systems in waves’ from July 29th.
Terry Myerson, executive VP of Microsoft’s OS division, said in a blog post: “Starting on July 29, we will start rolling out Windows 10 to our Windows Insiders.
”From there, we will start notifying reserved systems in waves, slowly scaling up after July 29th. Each day of the roll-out, we will listen, learn and update the experience for all Windows 10 users.”
This news comes after the firm revealed plans to have one billion Windows 10 devices by 2018.
Myerson also revealed that Microsoft will give a build of Windows 10 to its OEM partners as well as retailers across the world.
In other Microsoft news, the firm has announced an agreement expanding on a prior patent licensing arrangement with electronics and ceramics manufacturer Kyocera Corporation.
The partnership also resolves a patent infringement lawsuit brought earlier this year in the US District Court.

LG's display subsidiary is promising drastically thinner, lighter touchscreens that will be ready for notebooks later this year. With full HD (1080p) resolution, the Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT) screens substitute a touch panel layer for a touch sensor built into the LCD itself -- that's what makes it thin. It's the same tech found in smartphones like LG's own G4, but this is the first time it's been sized up to laptops. Thickness savings will be around 25 percent, while weight reductions could be as much as 35 percent compared to typical laptop touchscreen. That reduction in layers also translates to less light reflection, which LG Display reckons will make the new screens brighter and clearer. The company plans to roll out multiple sizes, with stylus-compatible models also on the way. If these screens are going to shave the profile of your next Ultrabook even further, there might be no other choice but to go with a few of those oh-so-slender USB-C ports.

You no longer have to bend over backwards to get more than a terabyte of fast, flash-based storage in your home computer. Samsung is shipping 2TB versions of its 850 Evo and 850 Pro solid-state drives, giving you as much capacity as a decent-sized spinning hard drive while maintaining that all-important SSD speed. They're only available for desktops at the moment, but Samsung is promising similarly cavernous models for laptops. Just be prepared to pay dearly for these no-compromise drives right now -- the 'standard' 2TB 850 Evo is officially priced at $800, while the slightly faster, longer-lasting 850 Pro could easily break the bank at $1,000.

Windows 7 has quickly started increasing its market share of desktop operating systems, nearing 61%. If you're wondering why this is happening when Windows 10 is almost here, the reason is this: Windows 10 will be available as a free upgrade for those running Windows 7 and 8, and the new OS will have the exact same hardware requirements as its predecessor, so the majority of PCs should be able to run it just as well. Because Windows 7 was launched in 2009, a license is more affordable than for Windows 8, so many users are switching to this version to take advantage of the Windows 10 free upgrade offer.

The Register reports that Windows 10 will include, defaulted on, "Wi-Fi Sense" which shares wifi passwords with Outlook.com contacts, Skype contacts and, with an opt-in, Facebook friends. This involves Microsoft storing the wifi passwords entered into your laptop which can then be used by any other person suitably connected to you. If you don't want someone's Windows 10 passing on your password, Microsoft has two solutions; only share passwords using their Wi-Fi Sense service, or by adding "_optout" to your SSID.

Microsoft has announced that its Surface 3 LTE edition will be coming to the UK on Friday.
Two configurations will be available, including 64GB and 128GB variants, both with 4GB RAM, running on Windows 8.1 Professional.
The device features a 10.8-inch Full HD touchscreen display and comes equipped with one year of Office 365 Personal.
It boasts a range of ports, including a full size USB 3.0, a Mini DisplayPort, a Micro USB charging port as well as a headset jack, plus it comes with up to 10 hours of battery life.
Brian Hall, general manager for Microsoft Surface, said in a blog post: “I’ve been so excited to see the reception so far of Surface 3, and especially the reception from students. Surface 3 was designed to offer what customers loved about Surface Pro 3 in a more affordable, more compact package.”
Prices start at £50 up front, and then small businesses will have to pay £27.67 a month.
Although, Microsoft originally billed the device at £77,777,77 as spotted by a reader of The Registerwho took a screen shot of the price tag.
Microsoft has since noticed the error and removed the price form its store, since the cheaper version is meant to be a fraction of that price.

We hope you didn't book off July 29th to celebrate Windows 10 launch day -- depending on your circumstances, you might be disappointed. Microsoft hasdetailed its rollout plans for the new operating system, and it notes that only Windows Insiders (aka beta testers) are likely to get Windows 10 on day one. If you're a regular user who reserved an upgrade, you'll likely have to wait as Microsoft deploys the new software in gradually larger "waves" until everyone can hop aboard. Big companies and schools who pay for Windows licenses in bulk, meanwhile, won't get their copies until August 1st. In either case, you'll get a heads-up if your system isn't quite ready. The cautious approach is understandable given the sheer scope of what Microsoft is doing ("millions" of people are going to get a major OS for free), but it's not so hot if you want to be the first on your block to make the leap.

Ark: Survival Evolved continues to dominate Steam's top selling products chart, beating out Grand Theft Auto V and all other comers again this past week.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, The Witcher 3 and Batman: Arkham Knight round out the top five. Past chart-toppers H1Z1 and Cities: Skylines made the list as well, thanks in major part to their participation in the concluding day's of Steam's summer sale.
It's also worth noting the tenth-best selling title from last week isn't receiving it's due, as Valve's feed spit out just nine names this time around. Here's the list:
- Ark: Survival Evolved
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
- Batman: Arkham Knight
- H1Z1
- Elite: Dangerous
- Steam Controller
- Cities: Skylines

With the anticipated launch of Windows 10 due this summer, Microsoft has already set its sights on a daring goal. During its Build conference for developers, the tech giant revealed its plans to see Windows 10 on one billion devices by 2018.
During the event, Microsoft’s executive VP of operating systems Terry Myerson, told attendees: “Today we shared our bold goal – to see Windows 10 on one billion devices within two to three years of Windows 10’s availability – the first platform version, in any ecosystem, to be available on one billion devices.”
Microsoft also showcased the operating system at PCR Boot Camp in May, with a real buzz around its room. The company had over 10 different devices running Windows 10, where you could really begin to see its vision take hold.
Various editions for Windows 10 have also been announced, in a bid to ensure the OS will be suitable for a range of devices and users. There is a Windows 10 Home edition, designed for the consumer-focused desktop, Windows 10 Mobile edition for smaller computing devices such as smartphones, as well as the Windows 10 Pro edition. This will feature various apps, tailored for smaller businesses. There will also be a Windows 10 Education and Windows 10 Mobile enterprise edition.
In addition, Microsoft has ensured its smartphone customers are not left out of the action, and has made the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10080 available on its phones. The build supports the Lumia 930/Lumia Icon, Lumia 640 and 640XL, and the HTC One (M8) for Windows.
On the company’s blog, Microsoft said: “We designed Windows 10 to deliver a more personal computing experience across a range of devices. An experience optimised for each device type, but familiar to all. Windows 10 will power an incredibly broad range of devices – everything from PCs, tablets, phones, Xbox One, Microsoft HoloLens and Surface Hub."
These versions have been developed to cater for a wider audience – and one analyst says that developer interest is fundamental to Windows 10’s success. Geoff Blaber, vice president of Americas at CCS Insight, adds: “Developers will be the deciding factor in the ultimate success of Nadella’s ‘mobile first, cloud first’ vision. Microsoft’s strategy goes beyond Windows 10 but a successful launch and swift user adoption is crucial to create the foundation for Microsoft’s business model transition."
Microsoft is also tapping into the casual gamers among us, as the Candy Crush Saga game will also come automatically installed for customers who upgrade to Windows 10 for free. Other games from publisher King are also expected to follow at a later date, which may also help to lure more users back to Windows.
During Boot Camp, PCR was also able to get hands on with the Windows 10 OS, which had been upgraded onto a variety of devices including laptops and tablets.
The memorable Start menu is back, while the tiles that were paired with Windows 8 have not been removed altogether. Instead they have been downsized and can be found in the Start menu.
Overall, the OS looked clean and precise, plus it seemed to receive many positive reviews as attendees huddled around to try out the software. Microsoft’s personal assistant Cortana also worked well, which helped to bring the devices to life.
The fact that Windows 10 is free for a year as an upgrade for users with Windows 7, 8 and Windows Phone still has some retailers stumped, and at a recent trade show, a distributor expressed its disappointment to PCR around the lack of a license-selling opportunity.
But, some are now starting to see the benefits of the new OS, as director of Utopia Computers, Craig Hume, comments: “Initially when I saw Windows 10 I thought we’re not going to get any money from it.
“But then when I thought about it, there’s going to be a lot of people that within a year are going to want to upgrade their computers, and I think there’s a good potential there for independents to make some money off of that.”
Since Microsoft is still remaining coy about the exact release date for Windows 10, we will have to be patient and wait until the summer when the firm launches the new OS.

D2X-XL v1.18.48 is released. D2X is a port of Descent 2 to OpenGL. It is an open source project and has received a lot of enhancements compared to Descent 2. My work on this project would not have been possible if hadn't been for the people who initially implemented the OpenGL and SDL code in D2X, so my thanks to them: It is for them that we can still play this great game on modern hardware. My thanks also to the many people who have provided input for this project, be it in the form of bug reports, great ideas, logos, encouragement, or other.
Descent 2 is a pretty old game, and further development has slowed down; so there are a few issues - some still stemming from the original Descent 2 - that have never been adressed or solved in D2X.
As I still like Descent 2 pretty much, I was always looking for a way to get rid of the things that plagued me most in Descent 2. Getting hold of the D2X source files and being able to create a MS Visual C++ 6 project for D2X finally enabled me to fix these annoyances.
D2X-XL v1.18.48 Changelog:
- Fixed: Segment distance calculation could hang (usually happened during lightmap precalculation)
- Fixed: The program played water sounds when the player was outside of water segments
- Fixed: Fog settings weren't properly assigned to fog segments

Microsoft seems to be really driven to pushing over a billion people to the new Windows 10 platform as soon as humanly possible. In the latest push to make this happen, the company has basically decided that (somewhat off the record), pirates can come in the side door and it really doesn't matter what the state of their Windows license is, they can get Windows 10 for free. To get deep into the weeds on how this is happening, you have to read Ed Bott's excellent article on ZDNET – "With a nod and a wink, Microsoft gives away Windows 10 to anyone who asks." However, on Windows10update.com, Onuora Amobi asks whether the cost benefit analysis has been done and if this deluge of new members will have a detrimental effect on the Windows Insider Program.

Microsoft has revealed that any Windows 10 Insider will be able get a free copy of the operating system when it launches on July 29th.
The changes were first highlighted by Microsoft’s Gabe Aul in a recent blog post, who also stated that the Insider program will continue after Windows 10 becomes final.
Aul said in the blog post: “Windows Insiders running the Windows 10 Insider Preview (Home and Pro editions) with their registered MSA connected to their PC will receive the final release build of Windows 10 starting on July 29th.
"This will come as just another flight. I’ve gotten a lot of questions from Windows Insiders about how this will work if they clean installed from ISO.
“As long as you are running an Insider Preview build and connected with the MSA you used to register, you will receive the Windows 10 final release build. Once you have successfully installed this build, you will also be able to clean install on that PC from final media if you want to start over fresh.”
Aul also confirmed on Twitter that no money will be spent on the upgrade for any Windows 10 Insider.
Microsoft has already announced various Windows 10 editions tailored for different customers, including Windows 10 Mobile, Windows 10 Pro edition and Windows 10 Home edition.
This news comes after Microsoft revealed plans to have one billion Windows 10 devices by 2018.

The average game on Steam sells approximately 32,000 copies, according to data from Steam Spy.
A new report by Sergey Galyonkin digs deep into sales and usage data on Valve’s digital store. It claims that titles such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim have around 8.6 million users, while Grand Theft Auto V sold 2.2m on PC in less than a month. The average game sells far lower however at 32,000.
Breaking down into genres, RPGs, action and strategy games are among the most popular, selling between 40,000 and 55,000 copies on average. The average free-to-play game meanwhile is said to attract some 330,000 users. Early Access and simulation games are reported to sell the lowest, though there are still obvious examples of multiple big successes in these areas.

Microsoft has managed to confuse us (again) about its Windows 10 upgrade policy. Last week, it said Insider Program preview users would "receive the Windows 10 final release build and remain activated." The offer sounded too good to be true since it meant that virtually anyone could get a free copy (though many folks may feel they've earned it for testing the buggy preview). However, Microsoft quietly removed the "remain activated" part and added a disclaimer that only Windows 7 or 8.1 license owners would get Windows 10 for free when it arrives on July 29th.

This month, our anonymous PC retailer offers their views on the imminent launch of Microsoft’s next operating system Windows 10, and its aim to launch it on one billion devices by 2018…
Microsoft is taking a gamble with Windows 10 by creating a universal platform that will run apps on any device, all powered by Microsoft apps/cloud/subscription services. Is it on the right track or just a step in the direction of Zune?
Microsoft’s ambition to reach one billion devices by 2018, is in my opinion, a tough one. It needs to understand politics – never upset your core supporters and users, especially when you cut them out of the channel. Microsoft needs to engage with their customers and offer better support.
From what I have seen, Windows 10 is a more refined Windows 8, however, like 8, it will still be a huge revelation to customers who might not need or want to move on with the Microsoft philosophy. Giving them a free upgrade is not the type of carrot they will bite on. Remember, Microsoft has the majority of the desktop OS market (91.22 per cent according to Net Applications) and has already had two strikes in less than 10 years. Microsoft’s agenda can only be of the sudden realisation that there is more money to be made from recurring revenues. Microsoft wants to make a bigger dent in the app marketplace compared to Apple and Google, hence its plan to give 10 away for free. However isn’t this a bit of a chicken and egg situation?
Having a desktop business in a mobile world is having a great effect on them, but mobile hasn’t truly taken over. Both need each other. And this utopia that Microsoft is trying to make is sadly for them nothing new – it has already been demonstrated by Canonical (UK) in 2012 and Android desktop. But, what is apparent is that we are all seeking a seamless experience that is available wherever we are. This is not just Microsoft heading down this business model, but most if not all are heading down this path, and sadly for us indies we are either being left out of the equation or we are having to evolve without any support.
The $1 million question is how easy and user-friendly will Microsoft make this process (for all)? And why is it that silver surfers who used XP can quickly grasp 7, but some users of 7 found it hard to tame 8? Let’s just hope that Windows 10 is not a futuristic disaster.
