The nearly bezel-less Dell XPS 13 is one of our highest rated laptops, thanks namely to its compact size, attractive design and fast performance. But if Windows just isn't your preferred operating system, now there's another option to choose from: Linux. As part of its commitment to the platform, which took off with the introduction of Project Sputnik, Dell's announced a Ubuntu-based developer edition of its sleek 13-inch laptop. Naturally, you'll have a myriad of configurations to choose from, with prices ranging from $949 all the way to $1,849, depending on how specced out you want your Linux machine to be.

A serious security hole leaves millions of Windows users open to attack, making it possible to extract encrypted credentials from a target machine. Researchers at Cylance say the problem affects "any Windows PC, tablet or server" (including Windows 10) and is a slight progression of the Redirect to SMB attack discovered by Aaron Spangler way back in 1997. Redirect to SMB is essentially a man-in-the-middle attack which involves taking control of a network connection. As the name suggests, victims are then redirected to a malicious SMB server which can extract usernames, domains and passwords. Cylance also reports that software from companies such as Adobe, Oracle and Symantec — including security and antivirus tools — are affected.

Tablet sales suffered in March across UK retail, but stores enjoyed an overall lift in sales according to new data from the British Retail Consortium and KPMG.
TVs also saw a decline in sales due to a lack of ‘affordable innovation’, however, small domestic appliances sold strongly throughout the month.
During March, UK retail sales increased by 3.2 per cent on a like-for-like basis year-on-year. On a total basis, sales were up 4.7 per cent, against a 0.3 per cent fall in March 2014. But the figures are flattered by the inclusion of Easter in March this year against April last year.
Online sales of non-food products in the UK grew 12.3 per cent in March versus a year earlier, when it had grown 12.8 per cent.
Helen Dickinson, director general at the British Retail Consortium, said: “People hit the High Street in March as the three month average showed that brick and mortar stores have contributed more to growth than online sales - the first time since August 2014.
"Looking at retail as a whole, there was a 4.7 per cent bump in sales, strengthened by the inclusion of Easter but underpinned by slow but steady growth.
“An increase in consumers venturing out to shop can be expected at this time of year and although this period is often difficult to measure due to Easter distortions, we saw a marked increase in sales across home categories including furniture and household appliances, even though fashion sales were a bit subdued. As could be expected during Easter, shoppers had a greater appetite for food with a 1.8 per cent increase in sales over the last three months.
David McCorquodale, head of retail at KPMG, added: “While the figures are inflated by the timing of Easter, they are still a welcome boost for retailers who have battled flat or falling like for like sales for the last quarter.”
This news comes after the British retail shop vacancy rate fell to 13 per cent in March.

"The Linux 4.0 kernel has been released. Linux 4.0 brings many features including live patching, Radeon DisplayPort Audio, RadeonSI fan control improvements, new OverlayFS functionality, Intel Quark SoC support, and a heck of a lot more. Linus's release announcement reads in part: "So I decided to release 4.0 as per the normal schedule, because there really weren't any known issues, and while I'll be traveling during the end of the upcoming week due to a college visit, I'm hoping that won't affect the merge window very much. We'll see. Linux 4.0 was a pretty small release both in linux-next and in final size, although obviously 'small' is all relative. It's still over 10k non-merge commits. But we've definitely had bigger releases (and judging by linux-next v4.1 is going to be one of the bigger ones)."

It's not a good time to be a PC maker... especially if you cater to the corporate crowd. Both Gartner and IDC estimate that the computer market shrank between 5.2 to 6.7 percent in the first quarter of 2015, in part because many companies stoppedupgrading from Windows XP. Simply put, many of the businesses that wanted to modernize already have -- they're not propping up the market like they were for a good chunk of 2014. IDC goes so far as to claim that this was the lowest volume of PC shipments since the start of 2009, which is no mean feat given that the world was still reeling from an economic collapse at the time.

UK boxed PC game sales continued to fall heavily in 2014.
The market generated £30 million last year - a dip of 30 per cent compared to the £43 million made from boxed PC game sales in 2013, according to UKIE and GfK Chart-Track, as reported by MCV.
If you compare this to data released earlier in the year from the Entertainment Retailer's Association, which shows that UK boxed video games (including console and PC titles) generated £948.5 million, it means boxed PC game sales make up just three per cent of that market.
However, the UK digital PC software market (including downloadable content, online multiplayer titles and social games revenue) was worth £741 million in 2014, claims SuperData. This represents a nine per cent increase on 2013’s total of £706 million.
The fall in boxed PC game sales is no real surprise, considering the huge popularity of free-to-play online games like League of Legends and download platforms such as Steam, and the severe lack of boxed titles for sale in High Street retailers.

If you're a Windows user who's tired of flipping back and forth between the Xbox Music and Video stores to get your media fix, then you'll be pleased to know that will all change with the next version of Windows. Microsoft has revealed that, at long last, it plans on combining music, video and apps in a single unified store in Windows 10. You can start to see the change already if you're signed up for the Windows 10 Technical Preview -- indeed, Microsoft has just started rolling out the Movies & TV page in the Store beta. With the recent release of preview versions of the Music and Videos apps, you can go ahead and browse, search and view rented or purchased media in those two apps, just like you could with their Xbox equivalents. Of course, this is all still very much in beta at the moment, but it's a good sneak peek at how Microsoft plans to unify its store experience across all of its products.

Google's original Chromebook Pixel was a gorgeous laptop, but the high price-tag and limitations of Chrome OS made it a niche proposition. For its successor, the company wisely kept the design (if it ain't broke, don't fix it) while updating the internals and making it less expensive. It's still a tough sell, but if you want the best hardware for Chrome OS, you'll soon be able to buy one in the UK. Two configurations will be available in the Google Play Store and Dixons shops from April 21st. The standard £799 model features an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 32GB SSD. More than enough to run Chrome and an assortment of Android apps, but if you're pining for some extra power, there will also be a £999 version boasting a beefier Intel Core i7, 16GB of RAM and a 64GB SSD.

PC gaming in the UK is experiencing a digital revolution.
According to SuperData, the UK digital PC software market – comprising DLC, MMO titles and social games revenue – was worth £741m in 2014. This is a nine per cent increase on 2013’s total of £706m.
Meanwhile, UKIE and GfK Chart-Track state that £30m of boxed PC software was sold in the UK during 2014. This is a substantial drop of 30 per cent on the sector’s £43m value in 2013.
The revenue drop is more severe when you consider the average selling prices of PC games were up in the UK last year. PC games retailed for an average of £18.36 in 2014 versus £16.62 in 2013.
However, thanks to the strength of digital, the overall PC software segment grew three per cent from 2013 to 2014, rising from £749m to £771m.
The situation is reversed on consoles. SuperData estimates that the console digital games market was worth £118m in the UK last year, by contrast, GfK Chart-Track reports that UK boxed console games sales was worth £999m in 2014.
Last month’s MCV revealed that PC title Cities: Skylines would have been the UK’s best-selling game during the week beginning March 8th if digital sales were included in official retail chart statistics, ahead of triple-A efforts such as Grand Theft Auto V, Dying Light and FIFA 15.

You know the drill: Microsoft releases a new OS and, roughly a year later, a hefty service pack arrives with a raft of fixes and added features. Neowin is reporting that the company will put out two updates in June and October of next year, both under the codename Redstone. There'll still be the regular patches and updates, but according to ZDNet, Redstone is believed to bring support for "new classes of devices that aren't already part of Windows 10." Naturally, Microsoft has already issued a standard no comment, not that it'd be too eager to distract attention away from this summer's launch. Oh, and before you ask, Redstone is a Minecraft reference in the same way that Windows 10's codename, Threshold, was a nod to Halo. Microsoft is nothing but loyal to its first-party franchises.

Windows 10 isn't even out the door yet, so what better time than now to talk about its successor? Believe it or not, there's a fair bit of information on it floating around already, including its codename: "Redstone." Following in the footsteps of 'Blue' and 'Threshold', Redstone is an obvious tie-in to Microsoft's purchase of Minecraft, which it snagged from Mojang last year. Redstone is an integral material in the game, used to create simple items like a map or compass as well as logic gates for building electronic devices, like a calculator or automatic doors. The really important news is that we could see Windows Redstone sometime in 2016.

April 8th, 2015, 00:03 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has announced that it will no longer have the “Do Not Track” feature enabled as default on Windows.
It will however provide clear instructions on how to switch it on in the browser settings if the user so desires.
The company’s decision to activate the setting as a default angered many advertisers who said they didn’t plan on honouring the do not track request.
It was pointed out that if this setting was on as default, then it did not necessarily reflect the users’ preference, justifying why they would ignore the request.
Brendan Lynch, chief privacy officer at Microsoft, stated: “We are updating our approach to DNT to eliminate any misunderstanding about whether our chosen implementation will comply with the W3C standard.
“Without this change, websites that receive a DNT signal from the new browsers could argue that it doesn’t reflect the users’ preference, and therefore, choose not to honour it.”
In other news: Microsoft recently launched a new pilot programme aiming to hire people with autism into fulltime positions at its Redmond campus, reports Business Insider.
Mary Ellen Smith, corporate VP of worldwide operations at Microsoft, wrote: “It’s simple, Microsoft is stronger when we expand opportunity and we have a diverse workforce that represent our customers.”
Danish non-profit organisation Specialisterne is in partnership with Microsoft to run the programme.
Smith continued: “People with autism bring strengths that we need at Microsoft, each individual is different, some have amazing ability to retain information, think at a level of detail and depth or excel in math or code. It’s a talent pool that we want to continue to bring to Microsoft."

Microsoft admits that when it switched on "do not track" by default in Internet Explorer 10 back in 2012, it was "welcomed by many." However, the company now has to switch it off to comply with the latest industry standard. The newest World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) draft for the feature says it "MUST reflect the user's preference," meaning you have to turn it on to activate it, just like on Firefox or Chrome. Redmond explains that it has no choice but to change the default, else advertisers can argue that it doesn't have to honor any DNT signal from Microsoft's browser.

Speaking at ChefCon, Microsoft Technical Fellow Mark Russinovich talked briefly about the prospect of some or all of Windows going open source. He said, "It's definitely possible. It's a new Microsoft." Russinovich acknowledged the reality that most developers and IT workers have embraced open source software to run some or all of their machines, and that means Microsoft needs to adapt. He also noted that Microsoft is beginning to adopt a strategy familiar to open source vendors: give away the software, and then sell support and related products. "It lifts them up and makes them available for our other offerings, where otherwise they might not be. If they're using Linux technologies that we can't play with, they can't be a customer of ours."

Microsoft knows there's a lot riding on the Surface 3. And it looks like the company's finally listened to feedback from people who have asked for a little more oomph from these devices. Nearly three years after Surface with Windows RT was born, Microsoft is introducing its third-generation Surface, a tablet that runs full Windows, not themisstep of an operating system that was RT. This time around, Microsoft's tablet also features a screen designed to work with a pen, while an overhauled Type Cover promises to deliver a more solid, less wobbly keyboard and an improved trackpad. The Surface 3 is as much a PC as the Surface Pro 3, leaving behind the days of being just a would-be iPad competitor. It is, perhaps, what the Surface line should have always been.

Ladies and gentlemen, get ready for some new Chromebooks. Yep, Google has just announced four new Chrome OS laptops, all of which lean toward the budget-friendly end of the spectrum. They are the ASUS Chromebook Flip, the ASUS Chromebook C201, the Hisense Chromebook and the Haier Chromebook 11 (This also comes in an educational version dubbed the 11e). Though it's the priciest model at $249, the most notable one by far is ASUS' Chromebook Flip. Not only is it the slimmest of the bunch with a thickness of only 15mm, it has a 10.1-inch touchscreen IPS display that can be flipped (hence the name) 360 degrees around.

Google has unveiled a whole new type of Chrome device, and it's one that can fit in your pocket. It's called the Chromebit, and it's essentially a Chromebook crammed in a dongle. This tiny little package contains a Rockchip 3288 SoC, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of eMMC memory, a USB 2.0 port, WiFi 802.11 ac support, Bluetooth 4.0, a Smart Ready controller and an ARM Mali 760 quad-core GPU. Just like Intel's Compute Stick, all you have to do to get the Chromebit working is to attach it to any display with a HDMI port, and voila, you've turned it into a computer. Unlike the Intel stick though, the Chromebit's HDMI end actually swivels around so that the dongle doesn't stick out in an unsightly way behind a monitor or TV. As for battery life, well, Google says it doesn't really know that just yet as the product is still in testing. Google promises that the Chromebit -- the first is made by ASUS -- will retail for less than $100. It'll be available in either silver, blue or orange and will be out later this summer.
