- Borderlands 2
- Brutal Legend

Microsoft's software isn't immune to the rash of recent web encryption exploits, it seems. The company has discovered (and thankfully, patched) a Windows flaw that lets hackers use the software's Secure Channel technology, which handles SSL and TLS encryption, to compromise PCs. If you're susceptible, you only have to visit a maliciously-coded website to trigger it; after that, thieves can swipe cryptographic keys and theoretically spy on your communications. The vulnerability primarily affects servers (where a lot of encrypted traffic flows), but Microsoft warns that it also affects regular versions of Windows from Vista on up.

Phil Spencer of Xbox tweets that Mojang has now been fully taken over by Microsoft, who paid out for the former at the tune of $2.5 billion (£15.77bn). He says:
“It’s official, today we welcome Mojang to the Microsoft Studios family. We're excited for the possibilities ahead with the Minecraft community.”
Microsoft has vowed to provide continued support for the various versions of Minecraft across different platforms such as iOS, Android and Playstation.
Markus Persson the creator of Minecraft is no longer with the company as part of the acquisition deal. He says that "it’s not about the money, it’s about my sanity” and adds “I don’t make games with the intention of them becoming huge hits, and I don’t try to change the world."
“I can’t be responsible for something this big. In one sense, it belongs to Microsoft now. In a much bigger sense, it’s belonged to all of you for a long time, and that will never change.”

via PC GamesN
Assassin’s Creed Unity will be out on November 13 in Europe, Far Cry 4 on November 20, and The Crew on December 2. They’ll all be available via UK digital distributors that aren’t Steam, and appear on Steam for users across the rest of the world.
“We’ve been in discussions with Valve about Assassin’s Creed Unity but for the time being the game is not available via Steam in the UK,” Ubisoft told PCGamesN.
“In the meantime, UK customers wishing to purchase the game digitally can do so by visiting the Uplay store, our retail partners or other digital distributors.”
So what’s so special about Steam in the UK? What stops Ubisoft and Valve from working together?
The issue, I suspect, is pricing. Currently, a digital version of the PC version of Assassin’s Creed: Unity is available online for £49.99 from both Ubisoft’s own store uPlay, and other independent digital retailers including GreenManGaming and Gamersgate.
That price would make it considerably more expensive to buy than any other games on Steam. Generally, the cost of single games on Steam rarely reaches over £40. The most expensive retail games right now on Valve’s platform are Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, and South Park: The Stick of Truth which currently sell for £39.99. Special editions, DLC bundles, software and some free-to-play DLC can be bought for more.
The £50 price that Ubisoft are quoting for the digital PC versions of their games is still lower than the £55 they’re charging in the Xbox One and PS4 digital stores.
Our brightest hope is that the games will be made available on Steam’s UK store at a later date. I also hope that the absence of the game on Steam, and the unusually high price elsewhere does not impact on UK sales, or drive players to key-strippers.

Microsoft has stopped providing Windows 7 licences to PC vendors as well as boxed copies of Windows 8 to consumers.
The computer giant is no longer offering Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Ultimate licences to PC makers, however it will still be supplying them with Windows 7 Professional for another 12 months.
Instead, all new Windows-powered computers built going forwards will only be able to run Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 - until Windows 10 hits the market in the second half of 2015 of course.
Mainstream support for Windows 7 will end on January 13th 2015, while extended support will end on January 14th 2020.
Microsoft has also stopped selling boxed retail copies of Windows 8, but will continue to provide licences for the OS to PC vendors.
You can find out more information on Windows end of life and end of support details on the Windows Lifecycle website.

It seems like the Internet Archive was just getting started when it resurrected WordStar andThe Hobbit from floppy-disk purgatory. Now, the latest additions to the Javascript MESS emulator are of the arcade variety. Specifically, games including Defender, Mr. Do!, Zaxxonand Joust are now playable in your browser. The IA's website says that most of the Internet Arcade's games should work, although some better act as a "verification of behavior programming" than anything else. Jason Scott, who runs the collection, has a blog postdetailing what browsers perform best (a 64-bit version of Firefox is tops, apparently) and how to setup a gamepad for the whole shebang. You know, if digging through gaming's origins is your thing. Be careful, though. Playing Millipede as a kid may have cost you a few quarters, but if you get caught playing it at work it could be a whole lot more expensive now.

At the TechEd conference, Microsoft showcased its new gesture controls for Windows 10.
The touch pad gesture will allow users to swipe downward with three fingers to clear all windows from the desktop.
Users can also use their fingers to swipe up to bring the windows back again.
Joe Belfiore, vice president for PCs, tablets and phones at Microsoft, said at the event: “The way we're rolling out is different this time; we're getting builds out early to users for feedback. It's a more collaborative development process.”
Windows 10 will also bring new security features for enterprise customers, including the ability to run applications that have been signed by Microsoft.
Microsoft also announced its plans to expand its Big Data offerings, with previews of Azure Streaming Analytics and Azure Data Factory.
Azure Event Hubs will also be generally available for customers.
These capabilities will help customers process data from devices and sensors within the Internet of Things (IoT) and manage data.
This news comes after the firm revealed a new Action Center in the preview build 9860, which collects toast notifications and alerts from traditional Windows applications and system notifications.

One of [aepharta]‘s ‘before I die’ projects is a homebrew computer. Not just any computer, mind you, but a fabulous Z80 machine, complete with video out. HDMI and DisplayPort would require far too much of this tiny, 80s-era computer, and it’s getting hard to buy a composite monitor. This meant it was time to build a VGA video card from some parts salvaged from old equipment.
When it comes to ancient computers, VGA has fairly demanding requirements; the slowest standard pixel clock is 25.175 MHz, an order of magnitude faster than the CPU clock in early 80s computers. Memory is also an issue, with a 640×480, 4-color image requiring 153600 bytes, or about a quarter of the 640k ‘that should be enough for anybody.’
To cut down on the memory requirements and make everything a nice round in base-2 numbers, [aepharta] decided on a resolution of 512×384. This means about 100k of memory would be required when using 16 colors, and only about 24 kB for monochrome.
The circuit was built from some old programmable logic ICs pulled from a Cisco router. The circuit could have been built from discrete logic chips, but this was much, much simpler. Wiring everything up, [aepharta] got the timing right and was eventually able to put an image on a screen.
After a few minutes, though, the image started wobbling. [aepharta] put his finger on one of the GALs and noticed it was exceptionally hot. A heatsink stopped the wobbling for a few minutes, and a fan stopped it completely. Yes, it’s a 1980s-era graphics card that requires a fan. The card draws about 3W, or about two percent of a modern, high-end graphics card.

Those of us who try to bring the handy two- and three-finger trackpad gestures from a MacBook over to a PC laptop are usually treated to digitus interruptus. But during TechEd, Microsoft's Joe Belfiore said that Windows 10 will have new three finger gestures (not to be confused with salutes) for PC trackpads. Swiping up and down will bring up the "Task View" to minimize and restore active windows, while left and right gestures will switch between apps. Sound vaguely familiar? On a MacBook, three-fingered left and right swipes let you change virtual desktops and apps, while up and down gestures reveal OSX's Mission Control -- a decidedly similar feature to Task View.

What's stopping you from creating the first killer Kinect 2.0 hack? Well, now that Microsoft's released the do-all sensor's SDK to the public for free you don't have many more excuses. The software development kit is available without any fees and what's more, you can now put any finished apps up for sale on the Windows Store as well. Just like that! To help developers along even further, Redmond is releasing an adapter that makes the Xbox OneKinect play nicely with a Windows 8 PC. Meaning, they won't have to use a hack to create a hack (or buy a redundant Windows Kinect). The $50 USB 3.0 dongle not only brings price parity between the two previously separate cameras, but it's another instance of Microsoft reversing a previous hardline policy to better suit its customers too. Now, get out there and get cracking -- the hardware giant already has a head start on you.

Thinking about giving the Windows 10 preview build a shot? You aren't the only one -- according to Microsoft, its Windows Insider Program hit one million registrants over the weekend, giving a lot of potential users access to the latest build of its next-gen operating system. Joining the Windows Insider Program doesn't necessarily translate to an installed preview, but it is the only way to get access to Windows 10 currently. While it's not clear how many of those millions have installed the OS, Microsoft says it has received over 200,000 pieces of feedback through Windows' native feedback application.

For the first time, Samsung has starting producing SSDs using (wait for it) 3-bit multi-level-cell, 3D Vertical NAND flash memory, better known as TLC V-NAND. So, who in the actual hell cares? You might, if you're planning on buying an SSD or computer soon. Samsung's current V-NAND technology has resulted in models like the 850 Pro SSD, which topped all benchmarks and has a 10-year guarantee. But combining V-NAND with 3-bit tech has more than doubled wafer yields, which should result in even cheaper, faster and higher-capacity SSDs. The disks aren't on sale yet, but there's a good chance that one of the first available will be Samsung's recently leaked 850 EVO.

Microsoft will ship DirectX 12 alongside Windows 10 in 2015, the computing firm has announced.
The company has also revealed the latest version of its DirectX API will be supported by Unreal Engine 4.4. Developers in the Early Access program who subscribe to UE4 will also have access to the DX12 port of the engine.
Microsoft claims the API reduces CPU overhead significantly compared to the previous version, and was designed from scratch to take full advantage of advanced GPU hardware features on new-gen systems.
Develop has more details.

If you can't wait to put Windows 8 behind you (and you're the adventurous type) you can now download the Windows 10 Technical Preview. As we saw, Microsoft has made the "Modern UI" all but disappear on the desktop and moved it to the resurrected start menu. That gives users a more familiar, almost Windows 7-like, experience. This also marks the first time virtual desktops have been baked into Windows, and you can switch between via a thumbnail in the taskbar. Some features from the mildly loathed previous version, like charms, were retained, but Microsoft said that pretty much everything was subject to change before it launches late next year. If you're ready for a long download and, no doubt, plenty of bugs, have a go here. And if you're still unsure, check out the quick guideto the preview, though be warned, it's a sizable PDF file.
