The main revelation from the Windows 10 event in late January was that an upgrade to the OS will be free for a year for Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 users.
Microsoft has promised that once a device has been upgraded to Windows 10, it will receive free updates throughout its lifetime – at no additional charge.
The firm said in a statement: “We think of Windows as a service – one could reasonably think of Windows in the next couple of years as one of the largest internet services on the planet.
“With Windows 10, the experience will evolve and get even better over time. We’ll deliver new features when they’re ready, not waiting for the next major release.”
But what does this mean for Microsoft’s distribution, retail and reseller partners? Will they lose a potential revenue stream in selling the Windows 10 licence, as many users will be able to upgrade for free?
Entatech’s Microsoft product specialist, Ellie Farley, told PCR: “This could be a concern. I think for system builders it will be okay as they will still be building machines, but it may have a big impact on retailers’ business.
“After upgrading within the first 12 months, Microsoft is giving full support for the lifetime of the device. We want to check the upgrade is not just free on devices pre-installed, but on the OEM side as well. I don’t know until I speak to Microsoft, but I think it will have a big impact on sales initially.”
Target Components’ ShopTalk business advisor John Coulter added: “It’s a great way to sell new systems, and equally a fantastic reason to assist existing customers who can get the upgrade.
“It’s a reason to contact customers and alert them that it should be avoided if you don’t like it (and isn’t it about time they had a computer health check).”
Microsoft consultant and OEM partner sales specialist Triston Brade told PCR: “Unfortunately I cannot offer you any official statements concerning the release of Windows 10.”
Windows 10 will run across all Windows devices. For example, actions a user makes on a PC will register on their mobile, thanks to the cloud.
The main new features of Windows 10 include cross-platform capabilities, allowing users to create, edit and share Office documents with other users and devices, built-in apps, content synching across devices through OneDrive, the ability to stream games from an Xbox One to a Windows 10 PC, and virtual assistant Cortana (the new Microsoft Office Paperclip?).
A fresh web browser, codenamed Project Spartan, allows users to annotate directly onto a page either with a keyboard or a pen, before sharing it, plus it has a distraction-free reading mode and Cortana integration.
Geoff Blaber from analyst CCS Insight, commented: “The tide could be slowly turning for Windows. The official unveiling of Windows 10 is a defining moment for Satya Nadella early in his tenure as CEO. Microsoft has re-evaluated its approach to software releases by adopting a web mentality that dovetails with its ‘cloud first, mobile first’ vision.
"This open approach is critical if Microsoft is to overcome the negative sentiment that has plagued Windows 8 since launch.”

A Humble Bundle consisting of Star Wars-themed games, released to raise money for Unicef, has already topped $1m in sales.
Kicked off on February 3rd, the Star Wars Humble Bundle has generated more than $1.3m since its launch, with over 134,000 sales. The deal will remain active for a further 13 days.
The total puts the collection just behind the Sid Meier Humble Bundle, which raised in excess of $1.7m in its first two days on sale.
As with all of Humble Bundle’s offerings, fans can pay what they want to get a collection of PC and Mac games, and choose what proportion of their payment goes to charity.
Humble Bundle announced in December that it has now raised over $50m for various charities.
The partner of choice this time around is the US Fund for Unicef, which will receive a cut of every bundle sold.
Those choosing to pay under $12 unlock beloved RPG Knights of the Old Republic, Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy and Dark Forces.
Those who offer over $12 additionally gain access to RTS Empire At War: Gold Pack and both the first and second entries in the Force Unleashed series.
Players paying over the average donation amount (currently at $11.31) grab another four games: Battlefront II, Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords and Republic Commando.
More titles are set to be added to the bundle soon, with past donators gaining access to the new games as they appear.

Following its huge Windows 10 event last Wednesday, Microsoft released a brand-new preview build to the public, versioned 9926. We were told that it'd give us Cortana, Microsoft's AI assistant, as well as a revamped Start menu and updated notifications pane. But as it turns out, that's not even close to summing up all that's new with this build. In fact, 9926 is easily the most substantial update rolled out so far in the beta program, with some UI elements and integral Windows features seeing their first overhaul in multiple generations.

Microsoft has delivered a mixed Q2 2015 financial quarter for the three months ending December 31st 2014.
Overall revenues during the quarter rose eight per cent year-on-year to $26.47 billion, while operating profit dipped two per cent to $7.77 billion.
Microsoft spent $243 million on 'integration and restructuring expenses', relating to both Microsoft's restructuring plan announced in July 2014 and the ongoing integration of the Nokia Devices and Services business.
Perhaps most interesting is Microsoft's cloud business - commercial cloud revenue grew 114 per cent driven by Office 365, Azure and Dynamic CRM Online, and is now on an annualised revenue run rate of $5.5 billion.
This helped commercial revenue grow five per cent to $13.3 billion, despite Office commercial products and services revenue declining one per cent. Server products and services revenues rose nine per cent while Windows volume licensing revenues increased by three per cent.
However, both Windows OEM Pro revenue and non-Pro revenue declined 13 per cent respectively. Microsoft says this was due to "the business PC market and Pro mix returning to pre-Windows XP end of support levels and by new lower-priced licenses for devices sold to academic customers".
The news comes after Microsoft announced Windows 10 will be free for users of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 within its first year from launch.
Devices and Consumer revenue grew 8 per cent to $12.9 billion, with Surface revenue up 24 per cent to $1.1 billion, driven by Surface Pro 3 and accessories.
Office 365 Home and Personal subscribers increased to over 9.2 million, up 30 per cent over the prior quarter, while Search advertising revenue rose 23 per cent. Bing's US market share now stands at 19.7 per cent.
Xbox console sales reached 6.6 million units, while phone hardware revenue hit $2.3 billion.
"Microsoft is continuing to transform, executing against our strategic priorities and extending our cloud leadership," said Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO.
"We are taking bold steps forward across our business, and specifically with Windows 10, to deliver new experiences, new categories, and new opportunities to our customers."
COO Kevin Turner added: "We again saw enthusiasm and demand around our cloud offerings like Office 365, Dynamics CRM Online and Azure, as well as Surface Pro 3.
"Our sales engagement worldwide continues to focus on helping customers and partners transition to the cloud and navigate the shifting product mix related to our services and solutions."

PC sales have grown throughout the UK by 24.8 per cent, while tablet sales have slumped according to research.
Analyst Context has revealed that consumer and notebook demand has helped to boost the sales of PCs.
Across Western European distribution, there was a solid growth of 20 per cent in the final three months of 2014.
However, total unit sales for tablets declined by 9.2 per cent year-on-year in Q4 2014, compared to a 38 per cent increase the previous year.
Context blamed the poor performance on Android devices for the drop in sales.
Marie-Christine Pygott, senior analyst at Context, said: “The push in budget consumer notebooks that we saw in Q3 2014 intensified in the run up to Christmas.
“Partly down to systems based on Windows with Bing, consumers were able to choose from a wide range of low-end clamshell notebooks at very competitive prices.”
The Netherlands also saw a growth of 31.6 per cent in PC sales, while Spain and France saw figures rise by 40.9 per cent and 26.4 per cent respectively.

After last Wednesday's Windows 10 event, early adopters and IT types were probably anxious for Microsoft to release the next preview build. Fortunately, it didn't take long as it came out on Friday, and it's safe to say that it introduced even more than many were anticipating (but still no Spartan browser). However, in case you missed it, DirectX 12 is actually enabled in this Windows 10 release, though unfortunately we'll need to wait for graphics drivers and apps that support it, to take advantage of DX 12 features and performance enhancements.

Late last week, Microsoft pushed out a new build (9926) of Windows 10 to those of you who are running the Technical Preview. The latest version comes with many new features, some easily accessible, others bubbling under, but two big changes are now certain: the Charms bar is dead, and Start Screen for large devices is no more. Replacing the Charms bar is the Action Center, which has many of the same shortcuts as the Charms bar, but also has a plethora of other information too. Notifications are now bundled into the Action Center and the shortcuts to individual settings are still easily accessible from this window. The Start Screen is no longer present for desktop users, the options for opening it are gone. Continuum is the future, and it has taken over what the Start Screen initiated with Windows 8.

If you've wanted a laptop where all the software is free and open source (FOSS), you've usually had to settle for mediocre hardware. Even FOSS champion Richard Stallman is making do with a ThinkPad that's several years old. At last, though, it looks like you won't have to compromise your ideology for the sake of keeping up with the Joneses. Purism has successfully crowdfunded the Librem 15, a portable PC that combines modern parts (such as a 3.4GHz Core i7 and an optional 4K display) with software that's accessible from head to toe. The operating system (a variant of Trisquel GNU/Linux), hardware drivers and included apps are all free and open -- Purism is even trying to loosen up the BIOS and firmware.

We spent a decent chunk of our Wednesday getting a load of what Microsoft's added to Windows 10 since the last time we saw it, and now the bravest among you can take (most of) that new stuff for a spin. The company launched the next build of the Windows 10 Technical Preview earlier this afternoon, and with it comes long-awaited features like Continuum -- for when you're running Windows on shape-shifting devices -- and a new Xbox app that focuses on "the basics."

Theme Park may be the Bullfrog game that led to many a follow-up, but for my money Theme Hospital is just as good if not better. It's not just the amusing illnesses - such as Slack Tongue, Bloaty Head and Baldness - or its proficiency at filling up your hospitals with patient barf. The 1997 classic is also an excellently balanced management sim, and it still stands out as unique. How many other hospital management games are there?
Luckily, my money isn't on the line, nor is anyone else's. For a limited time Theme Hospital is free to download and keep via EA's PC portal Origin, as part of its On the House program. If you've never tried the game, we'd recommend checking in with this page - doctor's orders.

Several readers sent word that we're now less than six months away from the end of support for Windows Server 2003. Though the operating system's usage peaked in 2009, it still runs on millions of machines, and many IT departments are just now starting to look at replacements.Although Microsoft publishes support deadlines long in advance -- and has been beating the drum to dump Server 2003 for months -- it's not unusual for customers to hang on too long. Last year, as Windows XP neared its final days of support, there were still huge numbers of systems running the aged OS. Companies lined up to pay Microsoft for extended support contracts and PC sales stabilized in part because enterprises bought new replacement machines. Problems replacing Windows Server 2003 may appear similar at first glance, but they're not: Servers are critical to a business because of the applications that run on them, which may have to be rewritten or replaced.
[In many cases, legacy applications are the sole reason for the continued use of Server 2003.] Those applications may themselves be unsupported at this point, the company that built them may be out of business or the in-house development team may have been disbanded. Any of those scenarios would make it difficult or even impossible to update the applications' code to run on a newer version of Windows Server. Complicating any move is the fact that many of those applications are 32-bit -- and have been kept on Windows Server 2003 for that reason -- and while Windows Server 2012 R2 offers a compatibility mode to run such applications, it's not foolproof.

Wondering how much Windows 10 will set you back? In most cases, nothing. Microsoft has announced that the new operating system will be a free upgrade in the first year for everyone using Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows Phone 8.1. The company sees Windows as a service rather than a product, Terry Myerson explains. Yes, Microsoft is partly following in Apple's footsteps (OS X upgrades have been free since Mavericks), but it's hard to complain about getting a big update for free.
Update: During a Q&A session after the event, Myerson promised that Windows RT users would get an upgrade to 10 as well. Your Surface 2 won't be left high and dry!

We've been hearing about Microsoft's vision of universal apps for years -- apps that can be written once and run on a wide variety of devices -- but with Windows 10 it's finally becoming a reality. During today's massive Windows 10 event, Microsoft's operating system heads Terry Myerson and Joe Belfiore mentioned several instances of how universal apps will fit into the Windows ecosystem. Windows 10 apps will eventually show up on the Xbox One, Myerson noted, and Belfiore also showed off how Microsoft Office apps seamlessly scale from phones (which will also run Windows 10) to PCs. The notion of universal apps may seem a tad boring, but it's essential to making developers latch onto this new Windows entry in a way they never did for Windows 8. After all, it's much easier to convince someone to build an app for your platform when it can be easily deployed across all sorts of devices (and it makes up for the weak mobile ecosystem).

Internet Explorer is dead; long live "Project Spartan!" Even the most die-hard Microsoft fan would probably admit that Microsoft's browser has become the punchline to a lot of jokes. The advent of Windows 10 has seen the outfit attempt to fix many of the gripes that users had with the last two generations of the operating system, so perhaps it's no surprise to see that a replacement browser is in the works. Microsoft has now revealed more information about the browser project, apart from its actual name -- for now, it's code-named Project Spartan.

Today might be all about the next chapter in Windows, but there's something for the hardware-heads, too. Specifically the Surface Hub -- which joins Surface tablets, andLumia smartphones on Redmond's roster of gear offerings. This beast is basically a large all-in-one PC (slash smart display) that is fully loaded with sensors, speakers, WiFi, NFC, microphones, cameras and more. The funniest thing? This huge device has been hiding in plain sight for the duration of Microsoft's keynote today.

Microsoft is building support for holographic displays into Windows 10, so it only makes sense that the company would make one of those displays, wouldn't it? Meet HoloLens, an official headset with see-through lenses that merges digital content with the physical. It includes spatial sound so that you can hear things happening behind you in the virtual world, and it even has a dedicated Holographic Processing Unit (HPU) to make sure everything works smoothly. The company is shy about just when it'll start selling HoloLens, but it should be available "in the Windows 10 time frame."

We knew that Microsoft was planning to tuck that Modern UI inside the resurrected Start Menu for Windows 10, and today, the company provided more details on the next installment's aesthetics. When the update arrives, there will be a version that's designed specifically for devices that are smaller than eight inches in size. This means that the look and feel of the desktop and larger tablets will carry over, and universal apps will allow for seamless transitions from mobile to office sessions. Apps like PowerPoint and Word carry a similar look in mobile versions, and features, like a list of recently opened files, sync across phones, slates and desktop machines. The goal here is an easy-to-use cross-device experience that's accessible anywhere, and consistent aesthetics will certainly help.
