Late last week, Google quietly began inviting people to opt into the beta channel for ChromeOS to help the company "shape the future" of the OS. Some betas can be riskier than others, but Google says that opting into this one is just a "little risk", one that will pay off handsomely for those who crave new features. New in this version is Chrome Launcher 2.0, which gives you quick access to a number of common features, including the apps you use most often (examples are Hangouts, Calculator, and Files). Some apps have also received a fresh coat of paint, such as the file manager. Google notes that this is just the start, so there will be more updates rolling out to the beta OS as time goes on. Other key features available in this beta include the ability to extract pass protected Zip archives, as well as a perk for travelers. ChromeOS will now automatically detect your new timezone, and then update the time and date accordingly.

Intrepid folks running Chrome OS beta will soon get to test a huge new feature that's not quite ready for stable release: Chrome Launcher 2.0. This version looks more like a new tab on the Chrome browser than the platform's current, more traditional one that's basically a windows that shows app icons -- it even has its own search bar. It also comes integrated with Google Now that shows your appointment, flight, reminder, etc. cards if you use the feature on a mobile device or two. Of course, since it's still a launcher, it has an app list you can access when needed.

The mod is Rise of the Reds, which adds two new factions - Russian Federation and European Continental Alliance - as well as overhauls and changes what's already there.Man, wasn't fortifying buildings - scenery! - futuristic for an RTS back then?!The last update to Rise of the Reds was in 2013, it looks like. There's no date for 1.85 but there's a pre-release trailer, suggesting it's not far away.If you want to give Rise of the Reds a go you'll need C&C Generals expansion Zero Hour to play.

Microsoft hasn't given up on the idea of a mini-me version of its successful Surface Pro 3 convertible, according to a rumor from WinBeta. But a Surface 3 model won't follow in the Surface 2's wobbly footsteps by packing the RT version of Windows. Instead, it will reportedly take a page from the latest Macbook and come with an Intel Atom or Core M fanless CPU and a full version of Windows 8.1, upgradeable toWindows 10. That means it could hit a lower price point than the Surface Pro while maintaining standard Windows compatibility -- the lack of which effectively sunk the Surface 2.

Smoother scrolling is coming to Chrome, as Google will integrate Microsoft's Pointer Events API into a future version of the browser. To say that Google and Microsoft haven't had the best working relationship would be an understatement. The companies have been warring on several different fronts, with browsers and the future of the web being a major sticking point. As Ars Technica reports, now that Internet Explorer (and all the legacy that comes with it) is about to be retired in favor of a sleeker, standards-friendly browser, the two companies -- or at least their browser teams -- are starting to warm to one another.

Microsoft today launched developer tools for the Windows 10 Technical Preview, including a software development kit (SDK). Developers can use the new tools, currently in preview, to start building universal Windows apps for Microsoft's upcoming operating system. A universal Windows app is Microsoft's verbiage for an app that can run across different form factors, including PCs, tablets, and phones. Developers can publish these apps in the Windows Store, which will be available across all types of Windows 10 devices.

Every year, browser vendors patch their browsers ahead of the annual HP Pwn2own browser hacking competition in a bid to prevent exploitation. The sad truth is that it's never enough. This year, security researchers were able to exploit fully patched versions of Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 and Apple Safari in record time. For their efforts, HP awarded researchers $557,500. Is it reasonable to expect browser makers to hold their own in an arms race against exploits? "Every year, we run the competition, the browsers get stronger, but attackers react to changes in defenses by taking different, and sometimes unexpected, approaches," Brian Gorenc manager of vulnerability research for HP Security Research said.

Microsoft has announced at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference in China, that the new OS will only need a minimum resolution of 800 x 600.
This trumps the minimum requirements of both Windows 8 and 8.1, which needed a minimum screen resolution of 1,366 x 768 and 1,024 x 768 respectively, reports PC World.
Other requirements are the same as older versions, such as needing at least 2GB of memory and 20GB of storage for the 64-bit and 1GB with 16GB of storage for the 32-bit.
Windows 10 will also only need a seven-inch screen for the professional edition and eight-inch for the consumer – good news for tablet manufacturers.
The requirements for Windows 10 smartphones are to be released alongside the full desktop version, and will apparently house a number of different options for mobile phone makers.
In related news, it was announced yesterday that even pirated copies of previous versions of Windows will be eligible for the free upgrade, which is set for release in the summer.

One of the major concepts of Windows 10 are new security ideas, and though Microsoft has touched on this topic before, it's only now giving us a more comprehensive look in the form of "Windows Hello." This is an authentication system that uses a variety of biometric signatures and combines hardware and software to allow for seamless and secure user recognition and sign-in. According to Microsoft, the ideal scenario here would be for you to simply look at or touch a new device running Windows 10 and to be immediately signed in. The software analyzes input from such hardware as fingerprint scanners and infrared sensors to make sure that you are you and not some impostor, and then signs you in without requiring you to enter a password. But the point of Windows Hello isn't only convenience, as the company's blog post notes, but also security. We've heard time and time again how insecure passwords are, and Microsoft is aiming to offer a widely-deployed replacement while still delivering enterprise grade security and privacy.

Microsoft will offer Windows 10 as a free upgrade to anyone with a copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8, regardless of whether that copy is genuine or otherwise.
In an interview with Reuters, Windows chief Terry Myerson explained the free update offer of Microsoft's upcoming OS would be extended to legitimate users and software pirates alike.
"We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10," Myerson said.
The Verge further reports that Microsoft has provided clarification on Myerson's statement, as some reports had claimed the offer to non-genuine copy owners was restricted to China – where former CEO Steve Ballmer once claimed only customer in every 10 is actually paying for Windows.
The company has made it clear that's not the case however, verifying that the offer will be made available to any individual with a qualified device.
"Anyone with a qualified device can upgrade to Windows 10, including those with pirated copies of Windows," a Microsoft spokesperson stated. "We believe customers over time will realize the value of properly licensing Windows and we will make it easy for them to move to legitimate copies."
Windows 10 launches worldwide this summer.

Microsoft's leaner, meaner, latest iteration of Windows is coming in just a few months, and it's launching in 170 countries, in 111 languages. Don't forget: Windows 10 is a free upgrade if you're already using Windows 7 or 8. Hiding in its imposing shadow, and launching at the same time, the company will release special free version of its OS for Internet of Things devices, which Microsoft's Terry Myerson reckons could well find its way into ATMs and ultrasound machines. Curiously, anyone that has a Xiaomi Mi 4 will also able to download the preview of Windows 10 ahead of it's release -- despite it being an Android phone.

In Windows 8, you were trapped in either the Modern UI or using the desktop, and going back and forth between the two worlds was cumbersome. Windows 10 takes a hybrid approach, allowing the user to choose between a classic desktop and a full-screen mobile experience. The feature, which has been developed under the name "Continuum," is now simply called "Tablet mode". In the build 9926 of Windows 10 Technical Preview, switching between the modes can finally be tried out. The leaked build 10036 shows that eventually you will also have the option to automate the process for dockable devices. Since Windows 10 is being positioned as the one OS for all of Microsoft's devices, being able to control the desktop and tablet experiences like this is critical to appeasing the consumer.

March 17th, 2015, 23:33 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has made a number of big announcements at itsConvergence 2015 event surrounding its upcoming OS Windows 10.
Internet of Things
Firstly, it announced it is delving into the Internet of Things (IoT) market, and plans to power connected smart devices in the future. It revealed the Microsoft Azure IoT Suite and Windows 10 for Internet of Things.
The Azure IoT Suite allows businesses to manage, connect and analyse all of their 'things', and will be available in preview form later this year. lt will provide businesses with finished applications targeting common IoT scenarios, such as remote monitoring, asset management and predictive maintenance.
Windows 10 for Internet of Things will offer one Windows platform with universal apps and driver models that will span a 'wide range' of devices, from low-footprint controllers such as IoT gateways to more powerful devices such as ATMs and industrial robotics. Windows 10 IoT will also bring enterprise-grade security from the device to the cloud, and native connectivity for machine-to-machine and machine-to-cloud scenarios with Azure IoT services.
Microsoft's 'Freemium' business model
The software giant hinted that it is going to make money from its free-to-download software by charging users for extras and additional features, reports The Verge.
Microsoft's chief marketing officer Chris Caposella revealed Microsoft's freemium plans at Convergence 2015, saying that it involves four parts: acquire, engage, enlist, and monetise.
"Acquire is Microsoft's way of getting people to use a product for free, like Office for iPad. Engage is Microsoft’s plan to get them hooked on the product and leverage other parts of its ecosystem to keep someone using the service. Enlist is simply finding fans to keep the circle going, and then monetizing is figuring out who will pay for subscription versions of the service they’re hooked on," said the report.
As Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for one year for users of Windows 8.1 and Windows 7, PCR had previously questioned how it will make money in that first year, and in my editorial leader column in our February issue, I did suggest that Microsoft saying it's making 'Windows as a service' could mean paid-for subscriptions or microtransactions in the future.
PCR reached out to Microsoft to find out if this will be the case for Windows 10 going forwards. However, all a spokesperson could offer was: "I’m afraid we have nothing further to share."
Space-saving Windows 10
Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be more compact than previous operating systems, taking up less space on both PCs and mobile devices by compressing system files better.
With current builds, Windows can give back approximately 1.5GB of storage for 32-bit and 2.6GB of storage for 64-bit Windows.
Microsoft is also redesigning Windows’ Refresh and Reset functionalities to no longer use a separate recovery image (often pre-installed by manufacturers today) in order to bring Windows devices back to a pristine state. This reduces Windows’ storage footprint further as the recovery image on typical devices can range in size from 4GB to 12GB.
This means an additional 6.6GB of storage could be freed for the user, as shown in the pie chart on the right.
There's more info on this on the Windows Blog.
Other announcements
Microsoft also announced the following tools for business:
- Power BI is a new service, now available in the US and more than 140 markets around the world, that helps customers use live market operational dashboards, explore data through interactive visual reports, and share new insights with colleagues and customers. New Power BI connectors, dashboards and reports for sources including Google Analytics will be available soon.
- The spring 2015 release for Microsoft Dynamics CRM, expected by the end of the second quarter of 2015, will deliver "significant performance enhancements, deepen interoperability with Office 365, and with new knowledge management enhancements, improve efficiency and collaboration between workers and businesses", says Microsoft. The release also introduces Microsoft Social Engagement, the latest update to Microsoft's social monitoring tool.
The following tools for individuals were also revealed:
- Office Delve, now globally available, helps users discover relevant documents, conversations and connections from across Office 365. Plus, Exchange Online and Yammer content is now accessible via the Delve experience.
- IT Professional and Developer Preview of Office 2016 will be the next version of Office on the Windows desktop. Office 2016 is expected to be generally available in the second half of this year, following a preview.
- Skype for Business (previously Microsoft Lync) technical preview starts this week, and the new Skype for Business client, server and service within Office 365 will be available starting in April. Skype for Business delivers allows voice and video collaboration for the enterprise based on the usual Skype user interface.
“Businesses are hungry to seize new opportunities using technologies like machine learning and predictive analytics,” said Satya Nadella, CEO at Microsoft.
“Only when businesses create a culture that empowers everyone to have access to data and insight that drive action will they be positioned to truly transform.”

Steam has once again bested its concurrent user record, surpassing 9m active accounts for a stretch during the past weekend.
VG247 reports Valve's digital platform peaked at 9.06m concurrent users around midday Sunday, Pacific Daylight Time. The figure dethrones the previous best of 8.51m users logged at the beginning of the year.
In terms of individual product performance during the record-breaking run, Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and recent release Cities: Skylines helped drive numbers to the new high.
Despite the consistent growth in player numbers – with total accounts at more than 125m as of last month – Valve recently admitted the company has left a lot to be desired in terms of communicating with its user base. That said, the firm arguably stole the show at GDC earlier this month between their VR and Steam Machine reveals.

Not fond of having to wait (and wait, and wait) while you download Windows updates from Microsoft's servers? You might not have to when Windows 10 arrives. The Vergehas noticed that a leaked version of the operating system lets you grab updates from other computers, whether they're on your local network or online -- yes, it's a peer-to-peer network for patches. Besides accelerating the upgrade process, the option could save precious bandwidth (important on capped data plans) if you have a multi-PC household. There's no telling when this feature will show up in a Windows 10 build you can try, assuming Microsoft doesn't get cold feet. A new public test release is reportedly coming soon, though, so you probably won't have to wait very long.

Microsoft thinks it's high time you ditch your passwords. The company, which is readying Windows 10 for a late 2015 release, just announced that its next-gen OS will include built-in support for several alternative log-in options, including fingerprint, facial and iris recognition. That means so long as a Win 10 machine has at least one of the necessary sensors -- a fingerprint reader, eye scanner or illuminated IR sensor for facial recognition -- there will be a built-in framework called "Hello" that helps users enroll their fingerprints, or face, or what have you. In other words, then, regardless of who made your machine (Acer, HP, et cetera), you'll get a consistent user experience for setting up a biometric log-in.

While NVIDIA unveiled its latest powerhouse GPU last week, it unveiled more information about the brand new Titan X at its own developer's conference earlier today. For those who squirm at tech speak, look away now, because we're going to indulge in quite a bit of it: The Titan X comes with 8 billion transistors, 3,072 CUDA cores, 7 teraflops of single-precision performance plus 0.2 teraflops of double-precision workloads. It also has 12GB of VRAM, which NVIDIA says is twice the amount of previous graphics cards. What does this mean for you? Well, NVIDIA is promising better gaming performance of course, but Jen-Hsun Huang, NVIDIA's CEO, says that the Tegra X also has great potential in scientific applications. A 16-core Intel Xeon would normally take 43 days to process data for a deep neural net analysis, but the Titan X can do it in just 1.5 days, he says. Suffice to say, the Titan X is a monster of a GPU, which might explain its hefty price tag: $999. That's about the same cost as its predecessor, the Titan Black, so we're betting that the cost of the older card will likely drop some time soon.

Microsoft is finally fixing a few of the most hated things about Windows. In a blog post, the software giant revealed that compared to Windows 8.1, Windows 10 will take up as much as 6.6GB less space, will re-install faster and possibly be easier to rid of crapware. To achieve those goals, Microsoft is using "Wimboot" disk compression to reduce system file and app sizes. To make sure it doesn't compromise performance, the OS will check your system RAM and other parameters before installing it. Also, instead of being stuck with files needed to recover from a failure, you'll create your own to backup and restore the OS and apps on PCs and tablets (Windows phones already have this feature). It added that the new technique will still allow recovery from "severe corruption."
