Microsoft's chatty Cortana is one of the more well-liked parts of Windows Phone, and Lenovo is making it more versatile on its own PCs with ReachIt. It exploits the voice assistant to find your own photos, documents and email across multiple Lenovo Windows 10 PCs, tablets, and even cloud services like OneDrive or Dropbox. The app is personalized with a user-specific Lenovo ID, letting you search for content on, say, your Lenovo laptop remotely from a ThinkPad tablet. It also uses location services, helping you locate a file by making a vague request like "Cortana, find the picture I worked on at Starbucks last week," according to Lenovo.

Hackers are getting more brazen and passwords are becoming huge of a pain as we keep signing up for services. Password managers help ease the pain of dealing with security over multiple sites and services, but for the most part, our computing lives are open to anyone with even marginal hacking skills. Google thinks it can fix that with Project Vault, a secure device that plugs into any system both desktop or mobile that supports microSD. The device runs its own ultra-secure operating system that's partitioned from the rest of the host device with 4GB of storage for your most sensitive data.

If you're an early Windows 10 adopter, you'll soon find a smattering of new featuresinside the Xbox app. As part of its June update, Microsoft is adding "game hubs" which, similar to the Xbox One, show which friends have played the title and their recent activity. Meanwhile the new 'Game Bar,' which lets you record video clips and screenshots, can now be triggered with custom shortcuts, and the Avatar app will load automatically when you select "customize" from the top header. A few other tweaks include better friend management, the ability to sort cloud-based game clips and turn on/off your Xbox One from inside the app. They're small changes, which is understandable given that E3 is just around the corner. Game streaming is still one of the most anticipated parts of the Xbox app, and it might not be too far away -- Microsoft says testers can now submit anonymous diagnostic information about their PC and network settings to help them refine the feature.

As Microsoft prepares for the launch of Windows 10, review sites have been performing all sorts of benchmarks on the tech preview to evaluate how well the operating system will run. But now a computer science student named Alex King has made the most logical performance evaluation of all: testing Windows 10's performance on a 2015 MacBook. He says, "Here's the real kicker: it's fast. It's smooth. It renders at 60FPS unless you have a lot going on. It's unequivocally better than performance on OS X, further leading me to believe that Apple really needs to overhaul how animations are done. Even when I turn Transparency off in OS X, Mission Control isn't completely smooth. Here, even after some Aero Glass transparency has been added in, everything is smooth. It's remarkable, and it makes me believe in the 12-inch MacBook more than ever before. So maybe it's ironic that in some regards, the new MacBook runs Windows 10 (a prerelease version, at that) better than it runs OS X."

There are plenty of security measures to keep your online files safe, but they frequently diminish or disappear when you're actually using those files. What if someone tries to swipe your data while you're working on it? Microsoft thinks it can help. It just unveiled VC3 (Verifiable Confidential Cloud Computing), a system that keeps your info secure at virtually every step. Whenever you open content, it's sent to a locked down device which limits access to you and you alone -- theoretically, this prevents even insiders (such as coworkers, cloud providers or government spies) from intercepting your secrets.

MenuetOS, a GUI-toting, x86-based operating system written entirely in assembly language that's super-fast and can fit on a floppy disk, has hit version 1.0 — after almost a decade and a half of development. (And yes, it can run Doom). The developers say it's stable on all hardware with which they've tested it. In this article, they talk about what MenuetOS can do, and what they plan for the future. "For version 2.0 we'll mostly keep improving different application classes, which are already present in 1.00. For example, more options for configuring the GUI and improving the HTTP client. The kernel is already working well, so now we have more time to focus on driver and application side."

Windows 10 will be launching this summer and Microsoft has revealed there will be a number of editions of the OS.
The versions have been tailored for various devices and uses, to help cater for the needs of different customers.
For example, there is a Windows 10 Home edition, designed for the consumer-focused desktop.
Another edition is Windows 10 Mobile, for smaller, mobile devices including smartphones and tablets. This edition features the same Windows apps as Windows Home as well as a new touch-optimised version of Office.
Plus, Microsoft is also launching a Windows 10 Pro edition, for PCs, tablets and two-in-ones. This edition features many new applications for small businesses, and protects sensitive business data.
"Windows 10 Pro devices are a great choice for organizations supporting Choose Your Own Device (CYOD) programs and prosumer customers," Microsoft said in a statement. "Windows 10 Pro also lets customers take advantage of the new Windows Update for Business, which will reduce management costs, provide controls over update deployment, offer quicker access to security updates and provide access to the latest innovation from Microsoft on an ongoing basis."
Microsoft added: “We designed Windows 10 to deliver a more personal computing experience across a range of devices. An experience optimised for each device type, but familiar to all.
"Windows 10 will power an incredibly broad range of devices – everything from PCs, tablets, phones, Xbox One, Microsoft HoloLens and Surface Hub.”
In addition, the tech company is also launching Windows 10 Education and Windows 10 Mobile enterprise.
In other Windows 10 news, the Candy Crush Saga game will also come automatically installed for customers who upgrade to Windows 10 for free, while other games from publisher King will also be available on Windows 10 at a later date.
The Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10080 is now also available for phones. The build now supports the Lumia 930/Lumia Icon, Lumia 640 and 640XL, and the HTC One (M8) for Windows.

You dirty Windows pirates will have to live with a constant reminder of your crimes come Windows 10. Pirated versions of the new operating system will be stuck with a desktop watermark reminding users of their non-genuine status, Microsoft EVP of operating systems Terry Myerson said in a blog post today. The announcement comes after Myerson confused the tech world a few months ago by declaring that pirated versions of Windows could partake in Microsoft's free upgrade offer for Windows 10. It turns out that's not exactly true: The company later said that non-genuine installations would have to go through the Windows Store to upgrade to Windows 10, which was a strong hint that it would make pirates pay. Myerson notes today that Microsoft and its partners will offer "very attractive" genuine upgrade options for pirates.

Microsoft's Hyperlapse is now more than just a clever idea in a research lab -- the folks in Redmond have released apps that help you record and produce super-stabilized videos on Android (in preview form), Windows and Windows Phone. Much likeInstagram's software, the algorithmic tools whittle down your shaky footage into high-speed, smooth clips that your friends are more likely to watch. The big differences are in the amount of control you get. You can zip beyond Instagram's 6x speed limit, for example, and the desktop app (Hyperlapse Pro) uses 3D modelling to steady the footage from GoPros and other common action cameras.

A new Windows release wouldn't be the same without many different versions of the OS to confuse the heck out of you. Microsoft finally gave us the skinny on Windows 10's upcoming versions today -- and they're all pretty familiar to Windows fans. There's the usual "Home" version for mainstream consumers and the "Pro" version for business users. The latter is different from Windows 10 Enterprise, which is meant for bigger organizations with support for large-deployments. There's also a version of Windows 10 targeted specifically at schools, which is likely part of Microsoft's plan to take on Google's Chromebooks. On the phone front, Windows 10 Mobile is what you'll see on most consumer devices, but there's also a "Mobile Enterprise" version for businesses.

It's no secret that Internet Explorer has always been criticized for its poor security, so with the Edge web browser (previously known as Spartan), Microsoft is trying to tackle this problem more effectively and make sure that users consider it at least as good as Chrome and Firefox. In a blog post, Microsoft details the security enhancements available in Edge, pointing out that most of the changes it made to the new browser make it much more secure than Internet Explorer. There is more protection against trickery, app containers are used as the sandbox mechanism, and protection against memory corruption is better. Old, insecure plugin interfaces are not supported at all: VML, VBScript, Toolbars, BHOs, and ActiveX are all nuked from the orbit.

An anonymous reader writes with this excerpt from VentureBeat:Mozilla today launched Firefox 38 for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android. Notable additions to the browser include Digital Rights Management (DRM) tech for playing protected content in the HTML5 video tag on Windows, Ruby annotation support, and improved user interfaces on Android. Firefox 38 for the desktop is available for download now on Firefox.com, and all existing users should be able to upgrade to it automatically. As always, the Android version is trickling out slowly on Google Play.Note that there is a separate download for Firefox 38 without the DRM support. Our anonymous reader adds links to the release notes for desktopand Android.

Grand Theft Auto V has again finished on top of Steam's weekly top selling products, while The Witcher franchise made a big splash as well.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive took the runner-up spot ahead of pre-orders of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, with Project Cars and the new Stars Wars Collection rounding out the top five.
Another release in The Witcher series also made last week's list, as The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition finished in tenth thanks to a discount.
Valve's RSS feed only released nine entries for the past week, apparently omitting the ninth best-selling title from the chart.
Here's the full list:
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
- Project Cars
- Star Wars Collection - 2015
- Euro Truck Simulator 2 - Scandinavia + Viking Legends
- Killing Floor 2
- The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited
- Unknown/system error
- The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition

Reader WheatGrass shares the news from Russia Insider that MCST, Moscow Center of SPARC Technologies, has begun taking orders for Russian-made computer chips, though at least one expert quoted warns that the technology lags five years behind that of western companies; that sounds about right, in that the chips are described as "comparable with Intel Corp’s Core i3 and Intel Core i5 processors." Also from the article:Besides the chips, MCST unveiled a new PC, the Elbrus ARM-401 which is powered by the Elbrus-4C chip and runs its own Linux-based Elbrus operating system. MCST said that other operating systems, including Microsoft’s Windows and other Linux distributions, can be installed on the Elbrus ARM-401. Finally, the company has built its own data center server rack, the Elbrus-4.4, which is powered by four Elbrus-4C microprocessors and supports up to 384GB of RAM.

A multitude of techsites are breathlessly reporting that Windows 10 will be the last version of Windows. These claims are based on a brief comment from developer evangelist Jerry Nixon while speaking a Microsoft Ignite session on "Tiles, Notifications, and Action Center." However, as Paul Thurrott points out, you probably shouldn't take this news too seriously. Windows development has been changing for the past several years. At the very least, we've known since we learned Windows 8 would be developed for multiple form factors. We've known it specifically about Windows 10 since it was announced — Microsoft has talked about transitioning away from giant, monolithic updates. Thurrott says,The reason anyone is talking like this is that Microsoft is pushing a "Windows as a service" vision, which doesn't mean "subscription service" but rather that it plans to upgrade Windows 10 going forward with both functional and security updates, plus of course bug fixes. You know, just like it's done with every single version of Windows. Ever. ... In other words, nothing to see here. Beyond the usual: things change. If it makes sense to keep updating Windows 10 and not change the brand or version number, Microsoft will do that. If it makes sense to release something called Windows 10 R2, Windows 11, or Windows Yoghurt — seriously, who cares? — then they'll do that.

D2X-XL v1.18.1 is released. D2X is a port of Descent 2 to OpenGL. It is an open source project and has received a lot of enhancements compared to Descent 2. My work on this project would not have been possible if hadn't been for the people who initially implemented the OpenGL and SDL code in D2X, so my thanks to them: It is for them that we can still play this great game on modern hardware. My thanks also to the many people who have provided input for this project, be it in the form of bug reports, great ideas, logos, encouragement, or other.
Descent 2 is a pretty old game, and further development has slowed down; so there are a few issues - some still stemming from the original Descent 2 - that have never been adressed or solved in D2X.
As I still like Descent 2 pretty much, I was always looking for a way to get rid of the things that plagued me most in Descent 2. Getting hold of the D2X source files and being able to create a MS Visual C++ 6 project for D2X finally enabled me to fix these annoyances.
D2X-XL v1.18.1 Changelog:
- Fixed: The cartoon render style was turned off during level transition
- Fixed: The program could crash when applying cheat codes that involved killing (boss) robots
- Improved: Tweaked outline rendering
