Windows is transitioning from something that you buy once every few years to a service that's updated on a regular basis. Windows 10 has only been out for a few weeks but already Microsoft's got the follow-up ready for selected users to test. If you're a member of the Windows Insider program, you can now get a look at Preview Build 10525 which'll land on your desktop automatically via Windows Update. The two most notable tweaks enable to you tweak the color of the taskbar as well as greatly improved memory management. On the downside, video playback and internet sharing are broken for now, so if you're interested in updating, just remember that you do so at your own risk.

An anonymous reader writes with this Venturebeat story about how Windows 10 is different from previous versions because of the way it was designed, including 15 public preview builds, and how much work is still being done.Windows 10 for PCs arrived two weeks ago. Thankfully, we don't need to wait years to say this will be a Microsoft operating system release like no other. The most obvious clue is not the fact that Windows 10 was installed on more than 14 million devices in 24 hours, that you can get it for cheap or upgrade to it for free, nor even that it ships with a digital assistant and a proper browser. No, the big deal here is that Microsoft is turning its OS into a service, and that means as you read these words, it's still being built. For the next few years, we'll be getting not just Windows 10 updates and patches, but new improvments and features. This is possible because Microsoft built this version very differently from all its previous releases

As more memory vendors try to compete to create the largest SSD drive, Samsung seems to be leading the way.
The firm has showcased its new 2.5-inch 16TB SSD drive, the PM1633a at the Flash Memory Summit in California this week, which is reportedly one of the largest SSDs in the world.
Before Samsung unveiled this SSD, some of the largest drives on the market reached capacities of up to 8TB and 10TB from the likes of Seagate and Western Digital.
But these new devices don’t come cheap, as Ars Technica revealed that Samsung will be selling the first units of the new 16TB SSD for an eye-watering $5,000 (£3,200), with prices expected to reach $7,000 (£4,481) for top versions.
Samsung has revealed that the new drives have been designed specifically for businesses and will most likely be used in servers.
The drive comes with 256Gbit NAND flash dies, which is twice the capacity of Samsung’s 128Gbit NAND flash dies.
To create this NAND, the firm has stuffed 48 layers of 3-bits-per-cell 3D V-NAND into a single die, which is up from 24 layers in 2013 and 36 layers in 2014.
Meanwhile, the firm has also launched two new smartphones, including the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5.
Both phones boast a 5.7-inch display and will go on sale later this year.

Hard drives are as ubiquitous as the desktops or they're made for. But as technology evolves, manufacturers continue to make these faster and smaller than ever before. Case in point: Samsung, which has developed the world largest hard drive, packing 16TB of storage in a 2.5-inch format. While the PM1633a (as it's currently named) could be considered an SSD, since there aren't any moving parts inside, there's no doubt it is a good ol' hard drive at its core. The PM1633a, revealed during the Flash Memory Summit in California, is based on Samsung's NAND flash chips -- similar to what you'd find on the its consumer solid-state drives. There's no word on pricing or availability at the moment, but it is more than likely that the PM1633a will end being used for enterprise servers.
Hey, we can dream, right?

Since the rise of 3D graphics cards, the inexorable trend in PC gaming has been around getting bigger, better and faster. That led to a culture of PC gamers obsessing over frame rates and doing whatever it took to push their hardware as much as possible. But now that even relatively affordable graphics cards can hit a silky smooth 60 fps at 1080p, there's only one big mountain left to climb: 4K gaming. And that's exactly what a powerhouse card like AMD's new Radeon R9 Fury X ($650) is poised to tackle. The only problem? 4K gaming still isn't worth your time and money.

One of the more interesting aspects of Microsoft's Windows 10 push is their desire to see it running on hobbyist hardware platforms. Today theyreleased Windows 10 IoT Core for the Raspberry Pi 2 and the MinnowBoard Max. They say, "Windows 10 IoT Core is a new edition for Windows targeted towards small, embedded devices that may or may not have screens. For devices with screens, Windows 10 IoT Core does not have a Windows shell experience; instead you can write a Universal Windows app that is the interface and "personality" for your device." Microsoft has posted a list of release notes for this version, calling out improved support for Python and Node.js, significantly improved GPIO performance, and more electronics support for breakout boards. Under a heading cheekily named 'Developers, Developer, Developers,' they lay out their plan for language support and provide a code sample.

August 13th, 2015, 21:46 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft revealed that Windows 10 has already reached 14 million devices since its launch, but some customers may be losing data during the migration, which Acronis hopes to help with.
Here the firm lists how customers can upgrade safely without losing any data:
1) Plan the upgrade – If there are multiple PCs in a household, you should not rush into installing Windows 10 on all machines right away. You should select one computer and upgrade it to Windows 10. This will help in learning what to do and what to avoid, and will make the upgrade process easier for other PCs.
2) Make sure the PC is suitable for the upgrade – With a recently purchased PC that runs an older version of Windows, you can most likely keep the machine and upgrade it to Windows 10. However, if the PC is over three-years-old, then you should consider replacing it with a newer machine that can run Windows 10 more easily. New OSs running on old machines can slow things down significantly. At some point, it will be running more advanced applications that require more computing power. When that happens, the hardware needs to be upgraded anyway. You should plan ahead so the PC can run the more advanced applications, thus avoiding the need to upgrade twice.
3) Back up the old PC - Before doing an upgrade to Windows 10, all the information and applications on the original PC need to be backed up. Upgrading without backing up all of the files and the system as a whole can lead to data loss. Even Microsoft states ‘unexpected PC crashes could damage or even delete your files, so you should back up everything’ before you upgrade. Windows 10 is not a simple Windows update, but rather a clean rollout of a new system and the install process will wipe out many folders containing important files or data.
4) Use disk imaging technology for backup, not just file copy – Windows, even XP, is a complex OS and some data lives outside of files. There is multiple data that has not been saved in a file or folder, like passwords, preferences, and everything that exists on the computer in applications. For this reason, it is useful to have a backup solution with disk imaging technology that simultaneously backs up the entire system while also backing up individual files. If you opt for just a file backup solution, you will be unable to restore system configurations or application data on the new OS.
5) Back up everything – Over time, you may have filed documents into desktop folders, temporary files, or even the Recycle Bin. Even these forgotten folders have to be backed up, as well as any hidden partitions. Such partitions, as found on Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and IBM machines, allow to restore the computer back to its original state. So it is extremely important to back it up, too.
6) Follow the 3-2-1 backup rule —The 3-2-1 backup rule recommends that you create three copies of the data, store the copies on at least two different storage media, and to save one of these copies offsite.
7) Save older backups after the upgrade – Once switching over to Windows 10, you should still keep older backups of data. They may need them again if something goes wrong and they decide to go back to the older version.

Microsoft is more than a little proud that a version of Windows 10 runs on tiny, embedded PCs -- proud enough that it's willing to make clever devices to show this off. The folks in Redmond have built a robotic air hockey table whose virtual player is powered by a diminutive MinnowBoard Max running Windows 10 IoT Core. It's simple (it largely depends on an overhead camera to track the puck), but it's good enough to keep up with at least some shots, as you'll see in the video below. You aren't about to buy this table in a store -- it'd need to keep up with a ruthless human rival, for starters -- but it's proof that modern Windows can find its way into some very unusual places.

There are plenty of workstation laptops that claim to deliver on the promise of heavy-duty computing on the road, but they're not usually that much different on the inside than a garden variety portable. You can't say that about Lenovo's monster new ThinkPad P50 and P70 systems, though. The two not only offer things you'd expect in this class, such as color-accurate 4K displays and pro NVIDIA Quadro graphics, but Intel's first-ever mobile Xeon processors(specifically, the E3-1500M) -- you won't have to settle for an ordinary Core i-series chip here. If you need to crunch 3D models or video when you're out of the office, one of these rigs may be your best bet. That CPU upgrade also brings the kind of perks normally limited to desktops, including support for a whopping 64GB of memory and Thunderbolt 3 ports that can handle dual 4K displays.

Firefox has hit a new landmark today with the release of version 40. The biggest change is improved Windows 10 compatibility, though previous versions of Firefox certainly work fine with Microsoft's new OS. Instead, the changes are mostly aesthetic to bring the browser in line with Windows 10's design and make it easier to use on a touchscreen. For instance, the "close" buttons on tabs are now bigger so that they're easier to use on a touchscreen, and the address bar has bigger fonts. It also has revised tabstrips and toolbars plus a custom Windows 10 theme.

The Steam Machine invasion is happening this fall. But while these computers are said to be more powerful than traditional consoles, such as the Xbox One or PlayStation 4, none of them are exactly portable. , however, is. Formerly known as Steamboy, the handheld system runs Valve's SteamOS and features a 5-inch, 720p screen, 32GB of onboard storage (plus an SD card slot), 4GB RAM, HDMI-out and configurable gamepads. In terms of connectivity, you'll find Bluetooth, WiFi and, on the Pro model, 4G for true on-the-go gaming. Smach Zero is also promising access to over 1,000 Steam games at launch, but we'll have to wait and see if that turns out to be true. According to the manufacturer, it will be available during Q4 of 2016 starting at $299. If you'd like to pre-order it, you can do so on November 10th -- the same day as other Steam Machines are launching.

Yesterday, someone noticed that an ad from a Russian news site was exploiting a serious vulnerability in the Firefox browser. According to a Mozilla security post, the attacker was able to bypass the browser's "origin policy" (its front line of security), inject a malicious javascript script and download sensitive local files to a server in the Ukraine. Mozilla said the attack was "surprisingly developer-focused for an exploit launched a general audience news site," because it hunted browser and FTP configuration files. It added that the "exploit leaves no trace that it has run on the local machine."

It's no secret -- even with its fast start, Microsoft needs more apps on Windows 10, across PCs, tablets and phones. Many of the most popular ones are already built for Android, iOS or even older versions of Windows, but supporting another platform can be tricky. To solve that problem, in April Microsoft announced "Windows Bridge" tools to make it easy for those developers to reuse already written code in new Windows apps. Now it's ready to live up to that promise, and is releasing an early look at the bridge for iOS today. More importantly, it's even opening up the source code (Github) for the Bridge tool itself so the people who will use it can help make it better. If you'd rather use apps than make them, then this doesn't necessarily mean you'll see ported over iPad or Android apps simply running on your PC, just that developers won't have to change so much of the stuff in the background to make them work.

Intel's professional-grade Xeon processors are no longer confined to fancy workstations or quiet data centers. The chip designer has unveiled its first-ever Xeon processor family for laptops, the E3-1500M v5. The Skylake-based part is meant to deliver the kind of heavy lifting that you'd want as a pro (such as rendering 3D models or crunching big data sets) while giving you a laptop that's still thin and light enough to carry around. It has Xeon mainstays like error-correcting memory and remote management, but it also rolls in support for brand new features that any self-respecting techie would like, such as the new Thunderbolt 3 connector. If you want, you can drive dual 4K displays, USB-C devices and more from a single port.

Having only arrived last week, Windows 10 is already on the brink of overtaking the most recent version of Apple’s OSX among Steam users.
The latest Steam Hardware Survey for July shows that Windows 10 is currently used by 2.3 per cent of those who agreed to take part (which by and large is an automated process). Of that number, 2.21 per cent used the 64-bit version of the software and 0.9 per cent the 32-bit version.
This compares to a total of 2.32 per cent of participants who use the latest version of OSX, 10.10. The entire OSX userbase accounts for a total of just 3.23 per cent, meaning Windows 10 is sure to overtake it in the August results.
Linux, meanwhile, languishes behind with just 0.89 per cent.
Windows’ overall share stands at 95.79 per cent. Windows 7 64-bit remains the most popular individual OS with 44.91 per cent.
Nvidia remains the boss of the GPU rankings, claiming 52.47 per cent of the Steam market compared to AMD’s 27.34 per cent. Intel dominates the CPU charts with 75.3 per cent share.
It was announced yesterday that Windows 10 has already been installed by some 14m users worldwide.
