Valve's Steam Controller, like PC gaming in general, is highly customizable. Whether you think its large, circular trackpads are an annoyance or a revolution, there are plenty of ways to tweak how they perform in-game. One thoughtful user, Chris Hepburn, has to help a disabled player fully control their adventurer one-handed. The right haptic pad controls the camera, while tilting the controller up, down, left and right handles character movement. The right trigger is used both to attack and defend, depending on whether you tap or hold with your finger. The A, B, X and Y buttons have been left untouched, while tapping the left analog stick changes your immediate weapons. Hepburn says the control scheme works best with a cushion for support -- reaching for the analog stick and waggling the controller can get a little tiresome otherwise. The Reddit community has suggested he make a left-handed alternative too -- anything that makes games more accessible is a worthwhile endeavour in our books. Top work, Hepburn.

The whole point of a Steam Machine is to get PC-like gaming in your living room, but do you actually get PC-like performance? Not so much, if you askArs Technica. It recently ran benchmarks comparing the performance of SteamOS and Windows 10 on the same hardware, and it's pretty clear that you're taking a speed hit in the name of couch-based convenience. The two operating systems are very close in synthetic tests, but SteamOS lags well behind Windows when it comes to real gameplay: depending on the game and your detail settings, you could be losing dozens of frames per second. All of the titles tested were still very playable on the modest test rig (a dual-core 3GHz Pentium with an old GeForce GTX 660), but this could pose a problem with more demanding titles in the future.

Steam Machines, those things that once seemed so mysterious and revolutionary, are finally here. Well, "select Steam Machines" are. Of the 15 Steam Machines listed earlier in the year, three are available, but one of them I can't find for sale in the UK.
The three Steam Machines come from Alienware, a familiar name in PC gaming, as well as Syber and Zotac. It's Zotac's Nen Steam Machine I can't find in the UK. Amazon US lists $900 as a guideline (importing will cost a further $200).
Zotac's Steam Machine sprung into being after Valve's Greg Coomer posted a picture of a tiny computer he'd built using Zotac bits and bobs. Zotac phoned Valve and a partnership began.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...cost-in-the-uk Syber offers the most expensive and powerful Steam Machine currently. The top-spec build will set you back £1205, but drops sharply to £695 and then £499 for lower-spec builds.

Blizzard is seeking a senior software engineer to bring some of its classic games up to proper working order for modern computers.
Polygon reports on the listing, which name drops Starcraft, Diablo II, and Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. All three are currently supported on Battle.net, but Blizzard is looking to “restore them to glory” by ensuring they work on newer operating systems.
The position's responsibilities include "[making] gameplay first again on modern operating systems [and owning] implementation and curation of features new and old,” as well as addressing outstanding bug and crash reports and combating hacking attempts.
"Evolving operating systems, hardware, and online services have made them more difficult to be experienced by their loyal followers or reaching a new generation," the job description reads. "We're restoring them to glory, and we need your engineering talents, your passion, and your ability to get tough jobs done."
No mention yet of the original Warcraft: Orcs & Humans or Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness, but one can only hope.

November 11th, 2015, 21:09 Posted By: wraggster
My stomach tied itself into a knot as I read the gaming community's first impressions of Valve's final Steam Controller. "It's cheap feeling," many of them said, "difficult and frustrating to use." Forum posts, tweets and reviews all bemoaned how different the touchpads felt compared to traditional analog sticks, accusing it of fixing something that wasn't broken.
The general consensus seemed to be that the Steam Controller was a mistake: A drastic, unnecessary step away from the tried and true layout of the 16-button, dual-analog gamepad standard. I felt betrayed and even a little offended -- but it wasn't Valve's experimental gamepad that let me down (I love that little thing), it was the gaming community that decided to turn a cold shoulder to innovation.

It seems like Google is looking to do a little spring cleaning. In an announcement on the official Google Chrome blog, the company noted that starting in April of next year, it will no longer support browsers on Windows XP, Vista and Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 devices. Google had alluded to the discontinuation of support back in April and reasoned that these older -- and in XP's case, almost prehistoric -- operating systems can no longer offer the crucial security updates the web browser needs to keep malware at bay. This means that older operating systems running Chrome browsers will still be fully operational, though they won't be eligible for new updates and features.
Update: An earlier headline said Google would end Chrome support for the above operating systems at the end of this year. It will actually end support in April 2016.

Hardware developers looking for a quick way to add machine learning to their devices just got some help from Nvidia. The GPU-centric company announced the Jetson TX1 developer module with an emphasis on machine learning. The device could lower the lead time needed to create machines that rely the on computations needed for dynamic input and computations. This includes: autonomous drones, facial recognition and behavioral analysis within a crowd and computer vision. The TX1 development kit replaces the Nvidia TK1 launched last year. The tiny supercomputer pushes one terraflop of performance, networks via ethernet and 802.11 ac, is under 10 watts and ships with Linux installed. Oh, and you can play Doom on it. The TX1 developer kit will be available for preorder on November 12 and will ship on November 16. The retail price is $599 with educators and students able to grab one for $299. The stand-alone module will be $299 and will ship in the first quarter of 2016.

On top of announcing an expansion in Ireland, Apple CEO Tim Cook also took some time to weigh in on Microsoft's newest hybrid laptop, the Surface Book. "It's a product that tries too hard to do too much," he said, according to theIrish Independent. "It's trying to be a tablet and a notebook and it really succeeds at being neither. It's sort of deluded." Ouch. We actually found the Surface Book to be a pretty darn good hybrid laptop in our review. Cook's comments are particularly rich on the heels of the iPad Pro's launch this week, a large tablet with keyboard and stylus accessories that looks like it was inspired by Microsoft's Surface hybrid tablet. Of course, the big difference is that the iPad Pro is running iOS, not OS X. Cook seems to be taking more issue with Microsoft's attempt to unify desktop and mobile interfaces in a single platform.

Today marks three years since Valve's Steam client went into beta on Linux. In that time over 1,600 games have become natively available for Linux. Going beyond having many new Linux games, Phoronix recaps, "we've seen Valve make significant investments into the open-source graphics stack and other areas of Linux (in part through their sponsorship of Collabora and LunarG). Valve developers are significantly pushing SDL2. We've seen more mainstream interest in Linux gaming, and Valve has been heavily involved in the creation of the Vulkan graphics API. They have given away their entire game collection to the Mesa/Ubuntu/Debian upstream developers, and much more." The three-year anniversary is coincidentally just days before the release of Steam Machines.

Intel's 6th Generation Skylake family of Core processors has been available for some time now for desktops. However, the mobile variant of Skylake is perhaps Intel's most potent incarnation of the new architecture that has been power-optimized on 14nm technology with a beefier graphics engine for notebooks. In late Q3, Intel started rolling out Skylake-U versions of the chip in a 15 Watt TDP flavor. This is the power envelope that most "ultrabooks" are built with and it's likely to be Intel's highest volume SKU of the processor. The Lenovo Yoga 900tested here was configured with an Intel Core i7-6500U dual-core processor that also supports Intel HyperThreading for 4 logical processing threads available. Its base frequency is 2.5GHz, but the chip will Turbo Boost to 3GHz and down clocks way down to 500MHz when idle. The chip also has 4MB of shared L3 cache and 512K of L2 and 128K of data cache, total. In the benchmarks, the new Skylake-U mobile chip is about 5 — 10 faster than Intel's previous generation Broadwell platform in CPU-intensive tasks and 20+ percent faster in graphics and gaming, at the same power envelope, likely with better battery life, depending on the device.

Several tech support teams of popular PC vendors, such as HP and Dell, are apparently discouraging customers from upgrading to Windows 10 and even telling them to roll back to Windows 8.1.
According to Laptopmag.com’s annual Tech Support Showdown, some tech support staff also failed to understand the core features of the new operating system.
The report claims that one HP support agent said ‘I really don’t recommend customers upgrade to Windows 10’, while a worker on Dell’s support line told them ‘there are a lot of glitches in Windows 10’.
“Phone-support reps from Dell and HP told us they discourage users from upgrading to Windows 10. An HP rep even tried to help us roll back to Windows 8.1 during one of our support calls. A Lenovo rep had nothing negative to say about Windows 10, but was confused about how Cortana works,” claims Laptop.
The publication has since had responses from both Dell and HP commenting on the situation.
Dell’s official statement on the matter reads: "As Windows 10 continues to evolve, we sometimes recommend a customer revert to their previous operating system to troubleshoot a specific issue they're having. In addition, we have a continuous feedback loop with Microsoft in which we share insight from our customers, like the one received from this particular call, to inform further updates to the OS and ensure Windows 10 reflects the experience our customers are seeking. We remain committed to Windows 10 and are ready to help our customers make the transition as easy as possible.”
8 things you need to know from the Dell Solutions Conference Meanwhile, HP’s VP of customer experience, Mike Nash, told the publication: "At the end of the day, the person's job is to get the PC running. Given the scenario, it might have been the most expeditious thing to get them back to a known good space."
This report comes shortly after Microsoft revealed that it will be stopping pre-install sales of Windows 7.
While the official end of support will not happen until 14th January 2020, what does this mean for the industry?
“The announcement that Microsoft will be stopping pre-install sales of Windows 7 signifies the very first step in yet another long, and potentially painful, OS migration for businesses all around the world,” said CEO of Camwood, Adrian Foxall, who has over 20 years of experience working in application migration.
“While Microsoft remains reasonably coy about the total number of Windows 7 licences sold, we do know that 53 per cent of all desktop traffic is now being accessed via a Windows 7 device. This figure has grown substantially amongst the business community, with the vast majority of organisations switching to Windows 7 after the end of support for Windows XP.”
He warns: “Businesses should not be looking to undertake some mad rush to abandon their existing IT systems. Instead, they should be using this announcement as an opportunity to get their application estates in order and to start thinking about how to plan and build an appropriate long-term migration strategy.”

It's taken Windows 10 just three months to overtake Windows 8 in popularity among Steam's active users, according to Valve's latest hardware survey.
Games Industry reports Steam's October 2015 survey shows nearly 28 per cent of participating users have made the jump to Microsoft's new operating system. That's up 3 per cent from September, which itself saw an 8 per cent increase from August.
Windows 10 is now the second most used operating system behind Windows 7, combining for 42 per cent of the total between 32 and 64-bit versions.
Back in July, Microsoft began offering the new OS as a free upgrade to anyone that had a PC running one of the last couple generations of Windows.

Processor makers regularly exaggerate the performance of their chips (remember Intel's obsession with clock speed?), but AMD is learning that there are limits around what you can claim. It's facing a class action lawsuit accusing the company of misleading buyers about the number of cores in its Bulldozer-based CPUs. It would advertise that a given processor had eight cores, for example, when it effectively had four -- each core in AMD-speak was really half of a module, and couldn't operate independently. As such, that Bulldozer part couldn't handle as many simultaneous instructions as you'd expect in a true eight-core design. That was bound to be a disappointment if you were a performance junkie expecting eight-way computing in your gaming PC or server.

We've seen some questionable crowdfunding campaigns in our time, but this one might take the cake. A Russian outfit is raising money for USB Killer, a $99 dongle that thwarts data thieves by... electrocuting your USB port. Yes, you're paying money to damage your computer. There's even a disclaimer that this could wreck your motherboard, turning the whole PC into a paperweight. It's supposed to help in case of "emergencies" like break-ins, but something tells us that you'd have a lot more to worry about with someone so close to physically raiding your data.

If you still want your next PC to run Windows 7, better act soon. Microsoft has updated its "Windows lifecycle" fact sheet, and the last day you'll be able to buy a PC with Windows 7 preinstalled is October 31, 2016. Microsoft would have shelved Windows 7 awhile ago, since it normally sells previous versions just two years after the next one arrives. However, many people treated Windows 8 like it was radioactive, so Windows 7 Professional (OEM) was extended, and will actually come off the market after Windows 8, and on the same day as Windows 8.1. Apart from pre-installed copies of Windows 7 Professional, all other Windows 7 versions are already off the market.

Psst: the private browsing mode in your current web browser probably isn't that private. It'll (usually) get rid of your history and cookies, but it won't prevent cross-site trackers from getting a feel for what you're doing. However, you now have an easy way to deal with that -- Mozilla has released a finished version of Firefox with its promised stricter Private Browsing mode. Switch it on and you'll get tracking protection that blocks code from those ads and social services that follow you from site to site. There's also a central control panel on the desktop for managing privacy and security, including the option to turn tracking protection off if it's breaking an important page.

You may have upgraded to Windows 10 as soon as humanly possible, but don't tell that to your PC manufacturer. As part of its tech support research,Laptop has learned that at least Dell and HP are discouraging customers from updating to Windows 10, or even recommending that people roll back to older versions. When asked, both companies defend the practice. They're committed to Windows 10, but their ultimate goal on a support line is to fix your PC... even if that means reverting to old software.
