Rocket League continues to dominate Steam's best sellers list heading into August.
The title outsold Ark: Survival Evolved and Grand Theft Auto V again for the top spot on Valve's chart. The trio have been rooted in their respective top three spots since Rocket League's arrival early last month.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – Valve's own chart-topper – finished fourth, while a discount promotion had Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor right behind it to round out the top five.
More general movement can be found on the second half of the top ten, with Garry's Mod and Civilization V both climbing back onto chart. Here's the full list:
- Rocket League
- Ark: Survival Evolved
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition
- Garry's Mod
- Civilization V: Complete Edition
- Final Fantasy Type-0 HD
- The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited
- Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel + Season Pass

It's hard to believe that Windows is 30 years old this year. Originally a graphic shell that sat on MS-DOS, Windows has blossomed over the years to be the visually rich experience it is today. That's not to say it hasn't encountered a few pitfalls along the way -- Windows ME, anyone? -- but despite weathering rivals from the likes of Apple, Microsoft's pride and joy is still the most widely used personal computer operating system on the planet. In the gallery here, we take a look back at Windows through the ages. Be sure to keep an eye out for a few cameos from Jennifer Aniston, Jerry Seinfeld and, of course, Steve Ballmer.

Now that Microsoft's voice-guided Cortana assistant is up and running inWindows 10, you might be eager to trigger it without leaving the "hey Cortana" feature on (which might sap battery life) or staying within reach of your computer. If so, Satechi might just come to your aid. It's releasing aBluetooth Cortana button that will trigger the Halo-inspired helper on Windows PCs and phones from a distance. You can use it to more quickly ask about the weather from across the room, for instance, or leave your phone in your car's cupholder when you start a call. At $23, it won't be the cheapest single-purpose peripheral when it ships later in August. However, that purchase might pay off if you'd rather not get that chatty with your devices.

"Hey Cortana, give me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWX4GUYGQXQ"]a into Windows 10 -- feels like a potent mashup of Google Now's worldliness and Siri's charm. Scheduling reminders? Check. Opening apps? Done. Proffering weather forecasts? You get where I'm going with this. I was almost surprised that she (sorry, "it") didn't humor my lousy attempt at a joke because Microsoft agonized over how to give Cortana a personality, to make it feel like more than just a talented, algorithmic guesser in the cloud. I've spent the last week of my life talking to Cortana, asking it harebrained questions along with proper requests, and you know what? The company succeeded, mostly.

In 18 days, Internet Explorer will turn 20 years old. But rather than celebratingwith a new version, as it did for birthday number 15, Microsoft will be shoving IE away into an obscure folder with other legacy applications -- you know, like Paint. Though the browser will live on, mostly for the sake of enterprise users, it will only receive security patches going forward (read: no new features or design changes). Just as important, it will no longer be the default browser in Windows. That honor now goes to Edge, a cleaner, leaner browser that makes its debut on Win 10. Microsoft hopes that with the name change, fresh design, smarter features and improved performance, Edge will be enough to convince people to set aside whatever negative impressions they may have had of Internet Explorer.

Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi is checking in with a Windows 10 status update, revealing that the OS is already on some 14 million devices. He noted that not everyone who reserved an upgrade has gotten it yet, but says the rollout will continue in phases over the next few weeks. While whether or not you can upgrade to Windows 10 may still be in question, we have information to help decide if you should with our FAQ and review. Of course, if you're one of the millions already in the door, you can just let us know how the new experience is working so far.

If you're one of the millions of people who've already upgraded to Windows 10, you've probably noticed that the OS changed your default apps. Your main browser, for instance, suddenly became Microsoft Edge after the upgrade -- something Mozilla finds "disturbing," especially since the platform actually made it trickier to switch back to Chrome, Firefox or any other browser. In anopen letter to Microsoft head honcho Satya Nadella, Mozilla's CEO Chris Beard revealed that the non-profit got in touch with the Windows 10 team when it got wind of the change, but that "didn't result in any meaningful progress."

July 28th, 2015, 22:28 Posted By: wraggster
Windows 10 has a feature that makes me very uncomfortable. WiFi Sense automatically connects you to open networks and shares your Wi-Fi password to your contacts on Skype, Facebook, and Outlook.com. More than that, Microsoft stores an encrypted copy of every Wi-Fi password you enter on your Windows 10 device.
Behind Wi-Fi Sense is a cool idea. Microsoft describes it thus:WiFi Sense automatically connects you to nearby WiFi networks, helping you to save your mobile data for when you really need it and giving you more Internet connectivity options. WiFi Sense can do a lot of things for you to get you connected to the Internet using WiFi, so you don't have to do them on your own. These include:
Automatically connecting you to crowdsourced open WiFi networks it knows about.
Accepting a WiFi network's terms of use on your behalf and providing additional info for you to networks that require it.
Letting you exchange password-protected WiFi network access with your contacts to give and get Internet access without seeing each other's WiFi network passwords.
So, when you go round to a friend's house you don't have to fiddle around connecting to their network and entering the password. Instead, as soon as you enter range of their Wi-Fi your device is connected to the internet. It's convenient, saves time, and stops you from crawling under a desk to read the sticker on the bottom of their Wi-Fi hub.
But the problems in practice are numerous.
For a start, Wi-Fi Sense is activated by default on all Windows 10 devices. So, if you don't know it's there to turn off, your laptop will be sharing your Wi-Fi password with Microsoft and your contacts, and will also be connecting to open networks without your explicit say so.
It doesn't actually show your password to anyone; instead, contacts' devices are sent the password and it does all the connecting for them. But who wants to share their Wi-Fi password with all their Skype or Facebook or email contacts? There's no option to share with specific people: it's all or nothing.
However, there are also some instances when WiFi Sense will share your details with strangers.
WiFi Sense can connect your device to open Wi-Fi hotspots:Some WiFi hotspots require you to provide a name, phone number or email address in order to connect. To help get you connected quickly, WiFi Sense can do this for you on your behalf. In some countries or regions, these fields may be populated by default with generic information that's not related to you specifically. For example, the Email address box may default tosomeone@example.com, but not your Microsoft account email address. So if you don't change the default info, only generic info will be provided.
So you could be walking through town as your phone or laptop sends your phone number and email address out to open networks.
WiFi Sense won't connect you to every open network around, but the way it determines which networks it connects to isn't based on security.WiFi Sense maintains a database of information about open WiFi hotspots – and we update that crowdsourced information based on what your phone and the phones of other participating customers tell us about those networks. WiFi Sense analyses characteristics of open WiFi networks that other Windows Phone users have connected to and determines if the users had a good-quality connection. If enough of them did, those networks are added to the database and then suggested by WiFi Sense, so you and others can get connected to them when using WiFi Sense.
So, to trawl in data from WiFi Sense users it sounds like you just have to have a high-powered open network, run it for long enough for the right people, and Microsoft will add it to a database. Then you just record folks' phone numbers and email addresses.
Microsoft acknowledges these networks aren't secure, saying: "an open network is a Wi-Fi network that doesn't require a password to connect, which means that the network isn't secure. Anyone can connect to it and other people might see info you send over the network." Yet it still includes them as an automatic connection for Wi-Fi Sense.
The problems aren't limited to open networks, though. Say you don't have Windows 10, and a friend who does comes round and you let them enter the password to your Wi-Fi. If they have WiFi Sense activated, then they just shared your Wi-Fi password with everyone in their contacts.
As mentioned before, Microsoft doesn't let you share your password with individual contacts, either. If you want to share your Wi-Fi password with a Skype contact you have to share it with ALL your contacts.
The thing that makes me really uncomfortable is that for WiFi Sense to work, Microsoft has to have a server filled with Wi-Fi passwords. Yes, they're all encrypted and, yes, the server will be surrounded with digital protections, but if recent years have proven anything it's that high security servers are not safe from hackers. The encryption may be very hard to break but it may not be impossible to break.
Happily, you can turn it off. In Windows 10, if you go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Manage Wi-Fi settings you can turn off WiFi Sense. You'll also see the option to have Microsoft and you contacts' devices to forget any passwords you've shared.
You can also have your Wi-Fi network opt-out, preventing from you or anyone else connecting to it from sharing it with Microsoft and their contacts. To do that you need to add '_optout' to the end of your Wi-Fi network's name.
WiFi Sense may one day become something I'll be confident using but right now it isn't.

Acer has unveiled the Aspire Z series all-in-one (AIO) PCs, which have been refreshed with the 23.8-inch Aspire Z3-710, featuring capacitive 10-point multi-touch, and the 19.5-inch ZC-700 AIO.
Both new devices feature a Full HD (1920x1080) LED backlit display, Windows 8.1 and are supported by Acer for the free upgrade to Windows 10 when it is released on July 29th.
Gregory Bryant, corporate VP and general manager of desktop client platforms at Intel, said: “We’re thrilled with the great innovation in Acer’s latest all-in-one PC.
“Showing just how much the desktop has been reinvented, this slim design with amazing user experience is another example of what’s possible.”
The Z Series boasts a 1080p Full HD webcam, stereo speakers with Acer TrueHarmony and Dolby Digital Plus Home Theater technology, which enables conversations to be heard clearly. Plus, built-in dual digital microphones can sense where voices come from to ensure they are picked up even in a noisy environment. All of this is packed into its 36mm form factor, which boasts up to 8GB of memory, maximum 2TB of hard drive storage, an optional DVD Super Multi optical drive and an optional Intel Core Pentium or Celeron processor. Each screen can also be tilted from -5 degrees to 25 degrees.
In addition, Acer showcased one of its new tablets designed specifically for gaming, dubbed the Predator 8.
Four speakers come with the tablet, which have been built into each of its four corners that jut out from its exterior in a bold red colouring.
An Intel Atom x7 and a 14nm-built chip with a quad-core processor powers the device, which can be clocked to 1.6GHz and up to 2.3GHz in Burst Mode. It features Intel HD Graphics, an eight-inch display and haptic feedback, meaning the device will shake to alert players when they have been shot in a game.

First released almost three years ago (and updated to 8.1 a year later),Windows 8 was a bet that didn't pay off. Bold -- or brash -- design decisions and a fundamental shift in UX led to a very slow uptake of the OS, and we're now just days away from the release of its replacement. Windows 10 comes at a difficult time for Microsoft, but although it too makes grand design revisions to the current formula, this time, it's fixing problems, not causing them.

Typically, you have to jump in with both feet if you want to shape web browser features -- you have to use early (read: buggy) releases and leap into the developer community. But what if you're happy with a stable version and just want to offer a bit of constructive criticism? Mozilla will soon have you covered. It's launching Idea Town, an opt-in program that lets you try upcoming features and offer feedback. You won't have to ditch a regular copy of Firefox, and these will only be features that are likely to show up. While this means that you won't get strictly experimental features (think Chrome's flags), it should put more of the development process in your hands.

Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 10, will launch in just two days (July 29th), but are you prepared?
The new OS is set to have a number of updated features to benefit both business users and consumers.
While enterprises of all sizes are reading up on issues surrounding the Windows 10 device lifecycle, how to secure Office 365 and the changes and additions to Microsoft’s advanced security and data loss protection, our sister site IT Channel Expert has a handy white paper from MobileIron which answers a number of questions surrounding this subject.
Check out MobileIron’s Windows 10 white paper here.
As well as reading up on the changes that are set to occur, there are a number of things business and home users alike can check up on right now to make sure they’re ready from the off to start using Windows 10.
It may seem obvious, but the first thing to do is make sure your PC or fleet of devices are actually compatible with Windows 10.
While Microsoft has said that the new OS will work on most PCs there are minimum system requirements, these included:
- The latest version of Windows 7 or 8.1
- 1GB or faster processor and 1GB of RAM for 32-bit, or 2GB for 64-bit
- 1024x600 display
- DirectX 9 or later graphics card with WDDM 1.0 driver
If your PC or tablet is good to go, you better backup your files and make some space – you’ll need at least 16GB of space to install the new OS.
Finally, make sure you’ve actually reserved your copy of Windows 10. Users need to download the Get Windows 10 app. All you need to do is click ‘Reserve your free upgrade’ in the app windows on your Windows device and enter your email to confirm the reservation.
Windows 10 will launch on July 29th globally and will be available as a free upgrade to customers using Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 in 190 countries.

Valve made more than $730m in revenue from Steam and its own games in 2014, according to a report.
Market data firm SuperData provided with estimated revenues for both Valve’s digital marketplace and its top three games DOTA 2, Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike Global Offensive. Those titles were said to have brought in over $400m in revenue for the company.
It was also estimated that total 2014 revenues for Steam reached $1.5bn. As Valve takes a 30 per cent cut of each sale, and taking out money from Valve's own games, the company’s royalties from third-party titles were calculated at roughly $330m.

Everyone has a Windows upgrade horror story. For me, it was an XP installation that inexplicably crashed halfway through the upgrade process, somehow corrupting my hard drive at the same time. And with Windows 10 launching on July 29th, it's hard to avoid the traumatic flashbacks to past Windows releases. But fret not. Windows 10, it turns out, offers the smoothest Windows upgrade process ever. It's remarkable for just how unremarkable the entire endeavor actually is. Still, there are a few things you should know before taking the plunge.

Microsoft is allegedly already producing its Surface Pro 4 - and is expected to reveal the device sometime this year.
According to reports the Surface will also boast a larger 12-inch display, the same ultra-thin form factor as its predecessor and a bezel size.
Microsoft has reportedly placed a large order for 256GB SSDs from Samsung, which will allegedly be used in the new device.
Known for its rumour stories, Digitimes is responsible for reporting this particular update, so it's worth taking the news with a pinch of salt.
According to Digitimes, the firm is expected to release the device in October, and it will come with Intel’s new Skylake processors, and of course, Windows 10.
An additional report has also revealed that Microsoft is planning to create a series of larger sized tablets, with displays bigger than 12-inches.
This news comes after Microsoft confirmed plans it will sell Windows 10 on USB drives to customers.
Plus, the company has also released a set of ads featuring toddlers, promoting the new operating system (OS).

If you use Windows -- just about any recent version of it, in fact -- you're going to want to check for updates as soon as you can. Microsoft has released an emergency, off-schedule patch for a security hole that lets ne'er-do-wells hijack your system if you open documents or websites that use embedded OpenTypefonts. The flaw exists in virtually every edition of Windows that Microsoft still supports, ranging from Vista all the way to your preview copy of Windows 10. There's no evidence that an attack exists in the wild, but you'll definitely want to get the fix before malware writers get their act together.
Update: There are claims circulating that this fixes an exploit discovered in theHacking Team breach. If so, it's not entirely true that this exploit has never been used. We've reached out to Microsoft for more answers.
Update 2: Microsoft tells us that this is indeed in response to the Hacking Team vulnerability. The company is "not aware of any active attacks" right now, but it's not about to wait for them to show up.

Google already added tools that help Drive play nice with Office files, and now it's offering easy access from inside Microsoft's apps. With a new plug-in, you can open files for Word, Excel and PowerPoint from Drive. When the time comes, you'll be able to save them in Google's cloud-based repository, too. It seems simple enough to use, and it's sure to come in handy for folks who prefer Google's storage option over Microsoft's, but still use Office to get work done. For now, the add-on works for Office on Windows machines, and there isn't any mention of when or if we can expect the same tool to arrive for the productivity suite for Mac.

Windows 10 has not even been released yet, but that's a perfect reason to start unearthing a few secrets. Over the coming weeks and months there will undoubtedly be an endless stream of tips, tricks, and tweaks to try out, but how's this for starters? Windows 10 has a secret screen recording tool that can be used to capture on-screen activity as a video file. Taking a static screenshot is very simple. You can either hit the Print Screen key, use the Snipping Tool, or turn to one of the countless screen capture tools out there — many of which are free. When it comes to capturing video, however, it's something of a different story. Before you splash out on a dedicated tool such as Camtasia, you might want to try out Windows 10's hidden tool. It's designed for gamers really, but anyone can use it. The Game bar is a toolbar which Microsoft meant for gamers to use to capture screenshots of their high scores, as well as video footage of their gaming skills. Despite the name, it is not limited to use within games

Microsoft has confirmed plans that it will sell Windows 10 to customers on USB drives.
This news comes as etailer Amazon unveiled pre-order pages for Windows 10 Home priced at $119.99 (£77) and Windows 10 Pro for $199.99 (£128).
According to VentureBeat, a Microsoft spokesperson said: “Windows 10 will be available on USB drives for purchase in retail channels shortly after launch. The suggested retail prices for Windows 10 in the US are the same as Windows 10.”
Although Amazon will be selling Windows 10, the retail release date is currently August 30th, much later than Microsoft’s intended release date of July 29th.
While Windows 10 is a free upgrade for owners of Windows 7 and 8, those who are using different operating systems will need to pay to access Windows 10.
