If you haven't had the chance to make the Flappy Bird or Minecraft clone of your dreams just yet, Microsoft is removing the final barrier to Project Spark's entry. The game-creation title's been in open beta for a bit, but now you can download it directly from the Xbox One dashboard -- no waiting required. Should you need something to, ahem, spark your creativity, the embedded trailer's montage of user-creations set to a Linkin Park song might do the trick. If that somehow doesn't help, Major Nelson will be joining the dev team on its Twitch stream this week, and you can pick his brain for ideas there. Or, maybe just kick back while Xbox's blogger plays the game (where he'll presumably make a game) on yourgame console. It's all up to you!

Toshiba has just dished most of the important details about its intriguing 4KSatellite P50t that we saw at CES 2014, along with some other new models. Unfortunately, it's left some info hanging -- namely the all-important prices. For the most part, the Satellite 50t model sounds pretty fine, considering the sleek 2.2kg (4.8 pound) weight. There's that exotic 282 pixel per inch 3,840 x 2,160, 15.6-inch touchscreen, driven by 2GB AMD Radeon R9 M265 graphics, for starters (1080p is optional). It's also packing an Intel Core-i7 CPU, 16GB DDR3L RAM, 4 USB 3.0 ports, an SD/SDHC slot, Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11ac WiFi and Windows 8.1. Oddly, the otherwise well-spec'd device only features a 1TB mechanical disk option, when it's clearly screaming for SSD speed -- hopefully Toshiba will rectify that prior to release. Availability is listed as sometime in Q2, but again, there's no clue about pricing. Meanwhile, Toshiba's also detailed a few other models after the break.

Valve's original vision for a PC gamepad was an arresting deviation from the norm: touch-sensitive control pads in place of dual analog thumbsticks and a full-on touchscreen in lieu of actual buttons. The company's latest revision -- codenamed "D0g" after the character from Half-Life 2 -- skews a little more traditional, replacing the curious touchscreen with eight regular buttons. Is it a loss worth lamenting? We caught up with Valve at GDC 2014 to find out.

An email in circulation, promising readers that they can be some of the first in the world to play Grand Theft Auto 5 on PC, has been exposed as a scam by an internet security firm.
The message, posted below, promises an exclusive invite to the beta version of Rockstar's long-rumoured PC edition of GTAV.
Instructions in the email explain that a promo code is supposedly contained within an attached file labelled 'BKDR_ANDROM.ATG' - however the file is malware that turns over control of certain computer systems to malicious users.
Rockstar has not announced GTA5 for PC, though it is widely assumed that a version is in development (all previous games in the series have shipped on PC). Further rumours suggest GTA V will release on PS4 and Xbox One at a later date, though this is less certain.
Publisher Take-Two has yet to announce plans for Grand Theft Auto V DLC.
"Even though the existence of a PC version of GTA V is an unproven rumour, cybercriminals still managed to make convincing bait out of it," said a spokesperson for anti-spyware firm Trend Micro.

A summer Star Wars: The Old Republic expansion has been announced, called Galactic Strongholds. It brings a kind of player housing to the MMO, known as Strongholds, as well as Guild Flagships - huge flying bases where you can convene.Strongholds can be decorated with trophies and furniture, and there's even a kind of leaderboard associated with who's got the best stuff, called a Stronghold Directory. As always, extra benefits are dished out to subscribers as opposed to free-to-play players, and they're detailed on the game's website. The expansion launches in August, with early access in July.

At the Game Developers Conference, or for those in the know: GDC, we got a taste of the new Unity 5 game engine. For most of you, a new engine doesn't mean much, but in the hands of the right people, it can mean more beautiful and realistic games. Unity, which powers any number popular titles, especially on the mobile front, is getting a host of new features for version five. Most notably is a new physics-based shader system and integration of Geomerics Enlighten illumination tools -- that means more realistic lighting and shadows as well as console-caliber visual effects. The engine's audio pipeline has also been rebuilt from the ground up for better performance and more flexibility when it comes to mixing sound and adding effects. But perhaps the biggest addition is early access to WebGL support, which means you'll be able to build titles that work on iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone, OS X, Windows, Linux, PlayStation, Xbox, WiiU and any modern web browser. As an example, Unity will be demoing Dead Trigger 2 running on WebGL at their booth at GDC.

Square Enix has decided to release Deus Ex: The Fall a week earlier than it had originally announced on Steam.
As spotted by VG247, the £7.99 also includes a free digital copy of Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition for a limited time.
The game, which was last year released on smartphones, was originally given a release date of March 25th.
It has been fully adapted for its new platform, with optional gamepad of mouse/keyboard support, as well as Steam trading cards and badges and a revised tutorial.

First time accepted submitter lars_doucet writes"I am a 15-year Flash veteran and nobody hates to say this more than me: Flash is dying, and the killer is Adobe. Where to now? HTML5 doesn't help me with native targets, and Unity is proprietary just like Flash was — 'don't worry, we'll be around forever! And so sorry about that neglected bug report — we're busy.' I'm putting my bets on OpenFL, a Haxe-based, fully open-source implementation of the Flash API that might just please both Flash refugees and longtime Flash haters alike. My article discusses my experiences with it and gives a brief overview for newcomers. In short: I can keep making Flash games if I want, but with the same codebase I can also natively target Win/Mac/Linux desktops, mobile, and more, without having to mess with Adobe AIR or other virtual machines."

Oracle today officially released Java 8, nearly two years after Java 7, and after much delay. The new release includes a number of critical new features, including Lambda expressions and the new Nashorn JavaScript engine. Java 8, however, is still missing at least one critical piece that Java developers have been asking for, for years. 'It's a pity that some of the features like Jigsaw were dropped as modularity, runtime dependencies and interoperability are still a huge problem in Java,' James Donelan, vice president of engineering at MuleSoft said. 'In fact this is the one area where I still think Java has a long way to go.'

Update 10, which brings offline play to SimCity for the first time, is launching today after successfully coming through final testing. An announcement on the EA forums reads, "Today at 6AM PT we will be releasing Update 10 with Offline play. This involves server down time and the game servers will be unavailable for a few hours."
EA unveiled Update 10 and the new single-player mode back in January, after a 2013 in which the publisher came under severe criticism for implementing an "always-on" system for the city-building sim. That system backfired when servers buckled under the weight.
EA has already said players can access their previously downloaded content in the single-player mode, and they can save their files locally. A new FAQ reveals players still have to sign into Origin to launch the game, but Origin can be put into an offline mode while the single-player mode is being played.

Valve is gradually embracing the warmth of an enormous video screen being mounted to its face, as it updated the beta client of Steam to add a "virtual reality mode" option. The newest beta version of Steam removes the "-vr" command line option in favor of a button in the view menu, which only appears for those with SteamVR installed when a head-mounted display like the Oculus Rift is detected.
Virtual reality became a big focal point for Valve in recent years, and its former head of VR joined Oculus VR's new Seattle team just one week ago. Our friends at Engadget seem to believe that this week, the week of the Game Developers Conference, is the time that the virtual reality landscape will begin to "look very different." Given the recent rumor that Sony will unveil its own virtual reality headset in the coming days, we tend to agree.

The Stanley Parable casts you as a nondescript soul in a nondescript office building. From this mundane beginning emerges a skewed story of a man making choices, both small and serious, and a player expressing their importance in a video game. It's clearly a thoughtfully considered, deliberately tuned and – what's that? "We didn't actually think about this when we were designing the game"?So said William Pugh, one of the designers behind The Stanley Parable, the first-person adventure game that initially took form as a Half-Life 2 mod. Davey Wreden, creator of the original version in 2011, shared the stage with Pugh in a candid analysis of their game during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Iceberg Interactive, a publisher best known for releasing meticulously detailed games set in the void of space, has announced that Starpoint Gemini 2 has entered beta testing via Steam's Early Access program.
New to this incarnation of the tactical space simulation are wormholes that allow for faster travel while threatening to destroy ships with their instability, and the more helpful T-Drive which speeds transit times without the danger of killing travelers in a messy implosion. Additionally, Iceberg has added new classes, new events, new music and has improved the game's loading times and overall balance.
Those who would like to join the Early Access beta test can do so on Steam at a cost of $25. As with all Early Access games, that purchase price not only enters you into the beta test, it also guarantees you access to the final, retail build of the game once that comes available.

Warlock 2: The Exiled is just about ready to host one-hexagon-at-a-time fights over territories, with its initial turn scheduled for April 10 on PCs. Steam users will also be able to add Ino Co's strategy game to their ever-growing library, with preorders opening up around March 20. The release date was shared on Twitter, a realm in which time travels normally and people fight over review scores and game resolutions instead of land masses.
Over 170 spells will be spread across a roster of 12 mages, each with their own abilities to offer in your conquest to hoard hexagonal spaces. Players can deploy cunning strategies in the game's greater sandbox mode or take on Exile mode's story, which focuses on claiming revenge on those that exiled you from Ardania.

The Enclave, a paramilitary organization claiming to be the last bastion and continuation of Earth's government in the Fallout universe, is now a joinable faction in Fallout: New Vegas thanks to modders Otellino, CNC and many others.
The "For the Enclave" mod available via NexusMods allows players to join a splinter group of the original Enclave as it goes head-to-head against their former brothers-in-arms. The mod adds a five-part main quest, four side quests, new voice acting, a potential companion and even an Enclave radio station.
Rookies need not apply, though; players who want to undertake this mission must be level 15, must have interacted with the NPC Benny, and must be running the most current version of New Vegas on Steam. The mod's description text also warns that it will be incompatible with most mods that alter Searchlight Airfield.

Cult Atari arcade IP Gauntlet is returning.
Warner Bros is behind the reboot which is heading for Steam on Windows and SteamOS this summer.
The game fronts the launch of what is being called WB Games Vault, described as “a direct-to-digital portfolio that will deliver paid games based on popular Warner Bros and Midway brands, plus original IP, across multiple digital networks”.
Gauntlet is being developed by Magicka Arrowhead Game Studios and stays true to the top-down 1985 original by offering four playable characters - Warrior, Wizard, Valkyrie, or Elf.
"With Gauntlet we combined the arcade style of the original game with an entirely new look and feature set that includes emergent, local and online four-player gameplay," Warner Interactive's senior VP of digital games David Haddad said.
"Gauntlet will be the first title in the WB Games Vault portfolio, which will provide us with an opportunity to access emerging talent within the game development community and match unique skills and experience with our extensive library of properties."

As hard as it is to believe, Microsoft has until now never put out a 3G/4G Surface tablet. But we knew one would come eventually: the company said it was working on an LTE-enabled Surface 2 and indeed, the thing recently surfaced (har) in FCC documents. Now it's finally here: Microsoft just announced that the LTE Surface 2 will go on sale tomorrow, and will be compatible on AT&T's 4G network here in the US. (Fun fact: its official name is literally "Surface 2 (AT&T 4G LTE)".) All told, it'll sell for $679 with 64GB of built-in storage. That's a $130 premium over the 64GB WiFi-only model which, if you're paying attention, is the same premium you'd pay for a cellular iPad over a WiFi one (it's worth noting, however, that the 4G Surface 2 is considerably less expensive).

Registered players at 1.8 million, Dragon Quest X has 300,000 DAUs in Japan alone
[h=3]Square Enix[/h]square-enix.com
Square Enix's resurgent MMO Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has more than 500,000 DAUs.
In an interview with 4Gamer, producer Naoki Yoshida said that A Realm Reborn has 1.8 million registered players in total, around 500,000 of which log in to play every single day.
"There are people who also log in at least once every two days, so if we were to include those, the the figure would be much higher," he added.
This also indicates that the game's user-base is still growing. Last November, Square Enix confirmed that A Realm Reborn had attracted around 1.5 million players in the time following its August 2013 launch - despite avoiding the ubiquitous free-to-play model in favour of subscriptions.
Yosuke Saito, the producer of Dragon Quest X, was also in the interview with 4Gamer. He confirmed that the game has 300,000 DAUs in Japan alone.
