Just yesterday, World of Warcraft gave everyone a look at just how important reaching the level cap could be. Today, the game is opening up independent level 90 boosts for everyone via the in-game store, and they're still priced at $60 a pop. It's bad news if you have an army of alts you want to speed along to the level cap, but it's good news if you have that army of alts and more money than you know what to do with. A tutorial video is embedded just past the break to show you how to make use of this feature.
Even if you're not up for buying one of the boosts, you might be looking forward to getting one along with your purchase of Warlords of Draenor. So when's that expansion actually coming out? According to the official site, it will be releasingon or before December 20th of this year, which means it's definitely coming out this year but leaves the field wide open in terms of when. Keep your eyes peeled for rollbacks on that date, as it's more likely that the expansion will be out long before the end of the year.

South Park: The Stick of Truth has emerged the victor for Steam's latest weekly sales chart, beating out DayZ and Banished for the top spot.
Ubisoft's RPG based on the long-running cartoon benefited from its launch last week, but had been a list regular for the past month or two based on pre-order sales.
DayZ is still hanging tough in the runner-up spot, while Banished fell to third after two weeks in the top spot. Dark Souls II pre-orders became available during the past week, helping the upcoming sequel to a fourth place finish in its chart debut.
The list, top to bottom:
- South Park: The Stick of Truth
- DayZ
- Banished
- Dark Souls II
- Rust
- The Walking Dead: Season 2
- Planetary Annihilation
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Plague Inc: Evolved
- Left 4 Dead 2

Dominic Cooper, who recently signed on to the Warcraft movie, has said the prospect of satisfying the game's legion of fans is "terrifying".
Cooper is currently starring in the film adaptation of EA's Need for Speed, but in a recent CVG interview he discussed the challenge of meeting World of Warcraft fans' expectations.
"That's scary, because that's a very specific world, so that really does have people who exist in that world and probably live more of their life in that world than they do in the real world, which is terrifying in itself," he said.
"But what that means is there have been people creating that world for many years and it's got a very specific look, and the characters within that, people have already made their minds up about who they are and what they mean to them.
"So that's quite a lot of pressure, in that you feel obligated to give the people who have spent the majority of their life playing it what they expect for it."
Cooper joins a confirmed list of talent from films including Mission Impossible and Pacific Rim.
Scheduled for a cinematic release in 2016, the film will star Ben Foster (X-Men: The Last Stand), Travis Fimmel (The Vikings), Paula Patton (Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol), Toby Kebbell (Prince of Persia The Sands Of Time) and Rob Kazinsky (True Blood).

As a 30th anniversary celebration, the BBC has recreated the 1984 (and later 2004) text adventure game The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It can be played on the BBC website now.Yes, I failed.
"The game is still the same wonderful piece of interactive fiction that Douglas Adams wrote and Steve Meretzky programmed, but in finding it a new home, a few changes needed to be made," the BBC explained. An HTML5 adaptation enabled a larger, "handier" interface with additional keys and functionality, and the ability to tweet from the game."Then things started to get silly. Having covered the basics, we decided to slip in an 'Any' key, just because we could. The $, % and ^ symbols were replaced with new ones for the Altarian Dollar, Flanian Pobble Bead and the Triganic Pu, not because they are needed in the game, but just because we felt like it."We then decided that rather than having a simple functionality where the user could tweet, we would allow the game itself to tweet, based on the actions of users in the game."This was when the games' personality started to shine through. This may or may not prove to have been a good idea..."The original Hitchhiker's Guide game sold more than 350,000 copies in 1984, but was knocked off its perch when graphical point-and-click adventures came along. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the IP, began as a radio comedy in 1978, before being adapted into books and stage plays, comics and yet more radio plays. There's a even a film starring Tim from The Hobbit.

If the simplicity of ASUS' Chromebox is enticing, you'll be glad to hear that you can pick up the miniscule computer very soon. The $179 Chrome OS desktop is now available for pre-order at stores like Amazon, Newegg and TigerDirect, with the first wave of orders due to ship on March 14th. A base system starts out modestly with a 1.4GHz Celeron and 2GB of RAM, although you can splurge for a Core i3 model (the Core i7 variant isn't coming stateside). Just don't expect a completely silent machine -- AnandTech understands that none of the Chromeboxes are fanless, contrary to some expectations. As long that isn't a dealbreaker, though, you can snag ASUS' cheap PC at one of the source links.

For all the popularity of fingerprint scanners, Fujitsu believes that it can go one better. The Japanese company has been working on palm-based systems for the last few years, and we've already seen turnstiles, wallets and tablets that are accessed from your hand. Fujitsu believes that palm vein sensing is around a thousand times more secure than conventional biometric methods and it's implementing the technology in its next range of business-focused laptops due out this week. We've been shown around some of these models, which have the new sensor fitted into an area that is roughly the same size and position as the company's existing fingerprint scanners, just below the bottom right corner of the keyboard. Using it is simple: Hold your hand a few inches above the sensor and the hardware will quickly scan the unique arrangement of your veins. If it judges you to be the real deal, it'll open up its secrets for your enjoyment.

A dozen companies agree to pay out to those who bought consoles, computers from 1998 through 2002
[h=3]Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.[/h]
Twelve manufacturers of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) have reached a $310 million settlement in a class action lawsuit over allegations they conspired to fix memory prices from 1998 through 2002.
Those who purchased DRAM or products containing DRAM (like PCs and game consoles) during that span can now file claims through the settlement website to receive payments of at least $10 and more than $1,000, depending on the number of their purchases and the number of claims received. To be eligible for a payment, consumers must have purchased the DRAM in the US (or from a US seller), and cannot have made the purchase directly from one of the manufacturers.
Despite the settlement, the defendants--Elpida, Hitachi, Hynix, Infineon, Micron, Mitsubishi, Mosel, Nanya, NEC, Samsung, Toshiba, and Winbond--are denying they did anything wrong. However, they have agreed "not to engage in the conduct that is at issue in these lawsuits" and to educate employees on complying with the law.
Samsung was hit hardest, with its share of the settlement pool coming to $113 million. Micron was next with $66.77 million, followed by Hynix ($49.97 million), Infineon ($29.11 million), and NEX ($20.28 million). Approximately $200 million of the money is expected to go to impacted individuals and businesses, while attorneys' fees and various government and administration costs will account for the rest.
Claims must be made by August 1. A court hearing to approve the settlement and award attorneys' fees is scheduled for June 25.

March 9th, 2014, 20:24 Posted By: wraggster
The co-creator of South Park has attacked Ubisoft for its decision to censor South Park: The Stick of Truth in some regions, including Europe.
“We weren’t going to change the content, so we’ve written little cards to explain what is going on, what they’ve censored, and made a joke out of it,” Matt Stone told Metro.
“We’re talking about 30 or 40 seconds out of the whole experience but we wanted people to know exactly where the line was: this is what you couldn’t see but for some reason the rest of the world could and we have no idea why.
“It’s not cool – it’s lame, ridiculous and stupid.”
It was confirmed last month that a handful of scenes involving abortion and anal probing were removed from the console versions in the UK and Europe – all of which can be seen here. Note that the PC release is uncensored.
The decision was not imposed by censors and was instead the choice of publisher Ubisoft, which feared a backlash in some territories.
South Park: The Stick of Truth is released in the UK today (Friday March 7th).
UPDATE: Stone gave an altogether less damning assessment to The Guardian.
"Ultimately, the full version of the game is in North America, so at least that version is out there, but anywhere it's censored [in the other version], we just put in little black cards explaining what has happened," he explained.
"It's not that big a deal. It doesn't change things that much, but we weren't going to change the game downwards somewhere and just not tell anybody. You'll see how ridiculous that is."

Valve has recently released Portal 2 on Steam for Linux and opened a GitHub entry to gather all the bugs from the community. When one of the Valve developers closed a bug related to Portal 2 recommending that the users disable a security feature, the Linux community reacted. A crash is caused by the game's interaction with SELinux, the Linux kernel subsystem that deals with access control security policies. Portal 2 uses the third-party Miles Sound System MP3 decoder which, in turn, uses execheap, a feature that is normally disabled by SELinux. Like its name suggests, execheap allows a program to map a part of the memory so that it is both writable and executable. This could be a problem if someone chose to use that particular memory section for buffer overflow attacks; that would eventually permit the hacker to gain access to the system by running code. In the end, Valve developer David W. took responsibility of the problem: 'I apologize for the mis-communication: Some underlying infrastructure our games rely on is incompatible with SELinux. We are hoping to correct this. Of course closing this bug isn't appropriate and I am re-opening it.' This is more of an upstream problem for Valve. It's not something that they can fix directly, and most likely they will have to talk with the Miles developers and try to repair the problem from that direction.

SternisheFan writes to note that ArsTechnica's Peter Bright has reviewed the leaked Windows 8.1 update that was temporarily available from Microsoft's own servers. Here's how the article starts:"Leaks of upcoming versions of Microsoft's software are nothing new, but it's a little surprising when the source is Microsoft itself. The Spring update to Windows 8.1, known as Update 1, was briefly available from Windows Update earlier this week. The update wasn't a free-for-all. To get Windows Update to install it, you had to create a special (undocumented, secret) registry key to indicate that you were in a particular testing group; only then were the updates displayed and downloadable. After news of this spread, Microsoft removed the hefty—700MB—update from its servers, but not before it had spread across all manner of file-sharing sites... Just because it was distributed by Windows Update doesn't mean that this is, necessarily, the final build, but it does present a good opportunity to see what Microsoft is actually planning to deliver."

Earlier this week, The Linux Foundation announced that it would be working with edX, a non-profit online learning site governed by Harvard and MIT, to make its "Introduction to Linux" course free and open to all. The Linux Foundation has long offered a wide variety of training courses through its website, but those can generally cost upwards of $2,000. This introductory class, which usually costs $2,400, will be the first from the Linux Foundation to run as a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC).

According to the latest forecasts from IDC, tablets are set to outsell PCs worldwide by 2015.
With global PC shipments falling by 9.8 per cent in 2013, IDC predicts that they will continue to drop in 2014.
Whereas the total tablet market is forecast to grow 19.4 per cent in 2014.
As both of these trends continue into 2015, the data reveals that tablets will take over as the number one PC product around the globe.
“Much of the tablet growth in commercial to date has been in verticals such as education, but going forward IDC expects tablets to continue to infiltrate small, medium, and large businesses around the world,” reads IDC’s report.
“This commercial growth is likely to benefit Microsoft's Windows over time.”

In his latest monthly status update, designer Chris Roberts reveals plans to grant the public access to the dogfighting component of Kickstarter success story turned space epic Star Citizen.
"As I write this, the Star Citizen team is all around me hard at work on the Dogfighting Module," Roberts wrote. "We plan to premiere dogfighting at a special Citizens-only event just prior to PAX East. If all goes as planned, the Dogfighting Module itself will launch shortly after PAX and you will finally get your hands on your flight sticks!"
While this is not the first taste of Star Citizen's gameplay offered to prospective players - Kickstarter backers were granted access to hangars late last year - it is the first major component of the game to make its public debut. Unfortunately, Roberts offers no information on how fleshed out this dogfighting module might be, though with PAX East scheduled for April 11 through 13, we likely won't be waiting long for a first-hand glimpse.

Has any franchise reboot endured more scrutiny and debate over its degrees of success (or is it failure?) than 2013's Tomb Raider? Perhaps it's apt fallout from Lara Croft's rugged origin story, in which she proves herself against wolves, wild cultists and supernatural weather.
Tomb Raider's commercial splash has gone from "'biggest opening" to "weak," back to "profitable" and onward to exceeding "profit expectations," according to a fan-facing note from Square Enix's head of studios, Darrell Gallagher. Looking back at the year since Tomb Raider first launched, Gallagher plays the referee and makes the call fans have been waiting for: "By the end of this month we will surpass 6 million units for our Tomb Raider reboot, and, having achieved profitability back in 2013 Tomb Raider has exceeded profit expectations and continues to make significant contributions to our overall financial performance."
Publisher Square Enix was never going to get an instant Call of Duty caliber hit out of the story-driven Tomb Raider, but this affirmed success becomes important when we see doom hanging over major AAA studios, investing years into a game that hits – but doesn't hit quite hard enough. For now, Lara Croft appears to be a viable business again, even if she's not yet swimming in it. And let's get some actual swimming in the next one, please?

Yesterday, Bandai Namco revealed that the PC incarnation of Dark Souls 2 will arrive on April 25. Today, the publisher offers a rundown of just how powerful your gaming PC will need to be to properly render the morose action game.
The bare minimum requirements for Dark Souls 2 include 2GB of RAM, 8GB of free hard drive space, an AMD Phenom II X2 555 dual-core processor at 3.2Ghz or Intel Pentium Core 2 Duo E8500 at 3.17Ghz and either an NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT graphics card or an ATI Radeon HD 5870. Dark Souls 2 supports a range of Windows operating systems dating back to Windows XP, and obviously, a functional Internet connection is required for online play. Any sort of sound card will do, as long as it supports DirectX 9.0c or a later version of the de rigueur API.
Those hoping for the "recommended" Dark Souls 2 experience will need 4GB of RAM, 8GB of hard drive space and the same sound card technology mentioned above. For processors, Bandai Namco suggests either an Intel Core i3 2100 at 3.10GHz or an AMD A8 3870K at 3.0GHz. As always, players will benefit by using the most powerful graphics card they can afford, but the game's official specs recommends nothing less than an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 465 or ATI Radeon HD 6870.
Full details on the PC incarnation of Dark Souls 2 can be found on Club Namco, along with information on pre-ordering the game and a handful of images depicting what the adventure should look like if your computer is up to snuff.

Sure, the Surface 2 supports Miracast, giving you the power to beam the contents of your screen wirelessly to some other, larger display. But not everyone has a compatible HDTV, which leaves us with that messy wired situation and that's no good for 2014. Ah, but there is a solution on the way and it's one Microsoft is hiding (in plain FCC sight) for the time being. That accessory, non-creatively dubbed the Surface Wireless Display Adapter, is none other than an HDMI dongle Microsoft's crafted to enable wireless mirroring for those of you with Surface 2's, or Pro 2's, and out of date HDTV sets. The filing doesn't reveal much about the adapter's design, but we do know that it supports dual-band WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n and could possibly see the light of day sometime this August. Or at least, that's when the filing's short-term confidentiality agreement is up. Regardless, at some point this year, you'll have another surface on which to surface the contents of your Surface. You get the point.

We hate to say it, but the era of near-constant PC industry growth might be over. IDC estimates that computer shipments fell by 9.8 percent in 2013, representing the steepest drop ever recorded. There just isn't much momentum in developing markets like China or Latin America, according to researchers. Sluggish economies and the shift toward mobile devices have cooled demand that was once red-hot. More established regions fared slightly better, although they may have been helped by a rush of users upgrading from Windows XP in the fourth quarter. IDC expects a partial recovery in the long run, but it believes that shipments have largely flattened out. If that's the case, PC vendors face much fiercer competition than they have in the past -- they may have to resort to extra-low prices and other extreme measures to keep buyers interested.
