Following January's official release of Steam Family Options, Valve Software has removed Steam Family Sharing from its long beta test and made it available to all Steam users.
As its name suggests, Steam Family Sharing allows those with blood ties (or those willing to lie about blood ties) to freely share access to retail PC, Mac and Linux game releases via Steam. "Players who share computers can now also share their available libraries with one another, each earning their own achievements and saving their own game progress to the Steam Cloud," reads Valve's official description of the service. "It's all enabled by authorizing shared computers and the familiar accounts that log into them."
Full details on how to enable Steam Family Sharing can be found on the program's website. It's a quick process, which should leave you plenty of time to decide who is worthy of membership in your new virtual "family."

Twitch has announced the final statistics for cultural phenomenon Twitch Plays Pokemon, which came to a dramatic close earlier today. And while only one pokemon trainer can be the very best, more than 1.1 million people tried. The actual number of TPP "players" - as in, those who entered commands in the game's chat - totaled 1,165,140, according to the Twitch official blog. As if that weren't quite ridiculous enough, here's some more rare candy to chew on:- Total time: 16 days, 7 hours, 45 minutes and 30 seconds
- Peak players: 121,000
- Commands issued: More than 122 million
- Onlookers: More than 9 million
- Total views: More than 36 million
- Total minutes watched: More than 1 billion
For reference, the total number of views is more than twice that of Shanghai, the city with the highest recorded population in the world. Granted those aren't all unique views, but that's still a freaking lot of views.
Unofficial stats have also been collected by the community, for those who'd like to know just when each magical moment transpired. According to one account, it took Twitch Plays Pokemon 22 tries to beat the Elite Four. It only took themtwo tries to beat Blue, the game's archenemy. Two!
The weight of TPP cannot be overstated - aside from the various memes and religions it's created, there's even a petition to have the US government officially recognize March 1 as Helix Day. Praise Helix.

Loadout developer Edge of Reality announced yesterday that the build-what-you-want, shoot-everyone-in-sight game had more than 2 million accounts get locked 'n' loaded - that's "created" in layman's terms - in the short span of two weeks.
Note that this is 2 million accounts, not necessarily 2 million players. Nonetheless, it's an impressive figure for the free-to-play shooter. After all, those who signed up for Loadout's mayhem have logged more than 9 million hours since its release on January 31. That's a lot of bullets no matter which way you shoot it.

Allowing developers to self-discount their own games on Steam is "another effort to shorten the distance between developers and customers", Valve has said."Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in Steam; trust also in me."
The initiative, dug up by Reddit user Sharkiller from a private Steam forum, will allow developers to configure, up to two months in advance, sales lasting up to two weeks. There don't appear to be any restrictions on discount amounts, and Valve doesn't need to approve the deals. To prevent exploitation, however, Valve specified that a game cannot be discounted more often than once every two months."As with the addition of a 'Recently Updated' section to Steam, this is another effort to shorten the distance between developers and customers," Valve told Ars Technica."This new Steamworks tool allows developers to configure discounts for their own products, on their own schedules. They can define custom sale periods or opt in to regularly scheduled sales. This will enable developers to better coordinate their promotions with events, announcements, or major updates they are planning for their products."

After their online store accidentally spilled the beans last week, Blizzard has now confirmed plans to let players pay $60 to boost one of their World of Warcraft characters to level 90, the current cap. At Blizzcon a few months ago, the company unveiled the game's next expansion, Warlords of Draenor, currently in development. When it comes out, they're giving every player a free boost to 90 in order to get to the new content immediately. They say this was the impetus for making it a purchasable option. 'It's tremendously awkward to tell someone that you should buy two copies of the expansion just to get a second 90. That's odd. So we knew at that point we were going to have to offer it as a separate service.' Why $60? They don't want to 'devalue the accomplishment of leveling.' Lead encounter designer Ion Hazzikostas said, '[L]eveling is something that takes dozens if not over 100 hours in many cases and people have put serious time and effort into that, and we don't want to diminish that.'"On one hand, I can appreciate that people who just want to get to endgame content may find it more efficient to spend a few bucks than to put a hundred hours into leveling a new character. On the other hand, I can't help but laugh at the idea that Blizzard will probably get a ton of people paying them to not play their game.

The PC version of Titanfall will take up 48GB of players’ hard drive space, it has been confirmed.
Vince Zampella of Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment revealed the size requirement over Twitter to a fan, adding that the download for the game would be roughly 21GB.
The installed size of the game is well over double that of theXbox One version of Titanfall, which Respawn has confirmed to be 20GB.
The large amount of data may be due to the game's 'Insane' texture setting, which requires a graphics card with at least 6GB of video memory (VRAM).
The previous PC minimum requirements for the multiplayer-only online mech-shooter were previously revealed to be a 64-bit version of Windows 7, 8 or 8.1, at least an AMD Athlon X2 2.8GHz or Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz processor, 4GB of RAM and 512MB of VRAM from an AMD Radeon HD 4770 or Nvidia GeForce 8800GT graphics card.
See what PCR thought of the Titanfall beta here, ahead of ithe full game's March 14th release on PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Tablet sales have hit a new high in Europe, outselling laptops for the first time despite a slow in growth.
Analyst Context reported that over 4.5 million units had been sold via distribution during the pre-Christmas period, with the UK seeing the largest amount of sales – 1.5 million. Germany was the second most successful market for tablets, with 950,000 units sold.
Despite the record high for sales, growth in the tablet market slowed, Context added. From Q1 2013 to Q4 2013, growth plummeted from 204.5 per cent to 39.1 per cent.
Tablets now account for 57 per cent of sales in the notebook, netbook and tablet segment, overtaking the more traditional form factors in Q4 2013 for the first time ever.
“Although tablets are expected to move into commercial environments too, this is expected to happen slowly and would for the time being represent an addition to, rather than a replacement of, the traditional clamshell systems,” explained Marie-Christine Pygott, senior analyst at Context.
“Also, recent efforts by vendors to provide ultraportable solutions such as thin and light clamshell laptops and hybrid solutions will also increasingly find their way into the commercial space and successfully compete with tablets.”
Android remains the most popular tablet platform, growing by 82.2 per cent to reach a market share of 69.8 per cent.
By comparison, the Apple iPad grew by only 2.7 per cent to reach 28.9 per cent total share. The iPad is proving most popular in the UK, seeing a 45.7 per cent sales boost in contrast with the rest of western Europe.
Microsoft’s Windows 8 tablets saw no change in market popularity, remaining at 0.9 per cent market share.

Outlast receives its first DLC in April both on Windows PC and PS4, obliterating any hope that you'd escaped the Mount Massive Asylum for good. The first-person survival horror features reporter Miles Upshur investigating the creepy hospital, and the "Whistleblower" DLC details the events that led him to the asylum's foreboding gates.
Whistleblower stars Waylon Park, a software engineer working for the Murkoff Corporation, which owns and runs Mount Massive. After spending two weeks at the asylum, Park felt he had to email Upshur and other journalists to spill the beans on the secret horrors of the asylum - probably not the best idea from a self-preservation point-of-view, but there we are. Whistleblower doesn't just chronicle these events, though, with developer Red Barrels noting "it will actually stretch past the events of the first game to show the final chapter in Mount Massive Asylum's story."
The above image is from the main game rather than the DLC, but we'll let youdecide for yourself if you want to see the gruesome screenshot Red Barrels published alongside this week's news. Really, who drinks soda just before dinner? Revolting.

February 27th, 2014, 00:57 Posted By: wraggster
Starting today, Diablo 3 is ... well, it's very different. Blizzard has released ahumongous patch for the game, overhauling many of its features. The highlight is probably the introduction of "Loot 2.0," a heavy reworking of the loot system that was first announced alongside the Reaper of Souls expansion last year. Among other changes, Loot 2.0 features the "Smart Drop" system, making it more likely that the items players discover will be specifically tailored to their character class.
The Nightmare, Hell and Inferno difficulty modes have been replaced by a new dynamic difficulty system, which itself is divided into subcategories: Normal, Hard, Expert, Master and Torment, with the latter being further divided into six gradations. New social features include Clans and Communities, which give players access to private member rosters, news and info postings, and dedicated chat.
On top of all this are loads of character-specific updates, boss and monster tweaks, new stats for heroes and more than we could possibly squeeze into this post. For every little detail, you can peruse the patch notes, and Blizzard's official online Diablo 3 guide has also been updated to walk players through all the changes.
Oh, and don't forget that there's one huge change that's still to come: The auction house is closing on March 18.

Our review of Pokemon X and Y spent a lot of time gushing over the introduction of 3D to the series, but now fans have taken things one step further by dragging the pixelated world of Pokemon Gold and Silver into the stereoscopic reality of the Oculus Rift headset.
The footage you see above was created by a YouTube user calling himself "Vaecon," who you may recall from his work in bringingThe Legend of Zelda to the Oculus Rift. For his latest project, Vaecon modified the ongoing Pokemon 3Dfan project to support the virtual reality headset. Some things don't quite work - text doesn't display properly and certain details are hard to make out - and it's apparent that the game was built for a more traditional display, but despite its flaws, the end result is a three-dimensional visit to the Johto Region.
While replicating this experience for yourself at home will require you to own an Oculus Rift headset, Pokemon 3D is a free download. It's not supported by Nintendo and could be struck down by a cease and desist order from the publisher at any time, but until then, the project's creators continue their efforts to add every known Pokemon and region to the 3D remake.

Aside from being the closest we'll get to seeing a Shenmue 3 in this lifetime (given its high-level simulation of forklift physics), United Independent Entertainment's Warehouse and Logistics Simulator is best known for its realism and faithful recreation of mundane labor. Similar to PC games likeFarming Simulator and Train Simulator, Warehouse and Logistics Simulatorchallenges players to complete an honest day's work while focusing on safety and efficiency.
Forget all of that, though. This week sees the release of Hell's Warehouse, a horror-themed add-on that fills the game's harbors, distribution centers, and construction sites with bloodthirsty zombies.
Luckily, players find themselves behind the wheel of a rugged forklift, which is more than capable of mowing down the undead hordes. Bombs, mines, and other weapons will also help to clear out particularly stubborn zombies across multiple scenarios and gameplay modes. Hell's Warehouse is available at a 20 percent discount during its first week of release.

Whether you're a benevolent ruler willing to sacrifice everything for your island nation or a greedy sociopath looking to get rich on the backs of the working class, Kalypso Media wants your help.
Tropico 5, the latest entry in Kalypso's banana republic management series, enters beta testing at an as-yet-undetermined date in March. The beta test wouldn't be very effective without players to stress the game, thus Kalypso has issued an announcement inviting interested players to visit the game's website where they will find a simple beta registration page. "We're looking for gamers who have a huge enthusiasm for city-building titles and with a wide experience playing within the genre," noted Kalypso in this morning's announcement.
More details on what you'd be getting into by joining the Tropico 5 beta test can be found at the game's website. Unlike prior series entries, Tropico 5 sees players grooming a tropical country from the colonial era to the modern day, a change that both expands the game's scope and offers new, historically accurate ways of grinding the proletariat masses under your megalomaniacal bootheel.

February 26th, 2014, 00:48 Posted By: wraggster
Blizzard has explained its decision to include a $60 in-app purchase in upcoming World of Warcraft expansion Warlords of Draenor.
The expansion increases the World of Warcraft level cap to 100 and gives players the option to instantly increase one player's level to 90.
However, should players wish to increase further characters to level 90 they'll have two options: either grind and level up as before, or buy another level 90 boost for $60.
Blizzard lead encounter designer Ion Hazzikostas told Eurogamer: "We realised as soon as we came out with the Warlords Of Draenor boost to 90, we knew that there was going to be demand for more than one.
"It's tremendously awkward to tell someone that you should buy two copies of the expansion just to get a second 90. That's odd. So we knew at that point we were going to have to offer it as a separate service.
"In terms of the pricing, honestly a big part of that is not wanting to devalue the accomplishment of levelling," Hazzikostas claimed. "If our goal here was to sell as many boosts as possible, we could halve the price or more than that: make it $10 or something. And then hardly anyone would ever level a character again.
"But levelling is something that takes dozens if not over 100 hours in many cases and people have put serious time and effort into that, and we don't want to diminish that."
Warlords of Draenor will explore the franchise's history across the new continent of Draenor. It will also introduce visual upgrades that increase the polygon counts of some player models more than fivefold.

February 26th, 2014, 00:00 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has responded to the rumours of an upcoming Windows 8 price cut for UK businesses.
Reports had circulated that the firm was planning to reduce the cost of the operating system’s license fee by up to 70 per cent for vendors.
The proposed cut would see Windows 8.1 licenses cost $15 (£9) for manufacturers – rather than the current price of $50 (£30).
Responding to the reports, a Microsoft spokesperson told PCR: “We have nothing to share [regarding the rumours].”
Windows 8 has suffered a slow adoption rate among consumers since its launch in late 2012, despite Microsoft’s efforts to migrate Windows XP users – who will soon have support ended – to the OS.

AMD has announced the first embedded GPU to run on its GCN architecture – the E8860.
The E8860 is said to provide up to double the graphics performance of the E6760 GPU, alongside support for DirectX 11.1, OpenGL 4.2 and OpenCL 1.2.
The GPU supports up to five 3840x2160 30Hz displays, as well as AMD’s Eyefinity technology to spread a HD display across multiple screens.
Alternatively, one 4096x2160 60Hz display over HDMI or DP1.2 can be output.
The card features 2GB of GDDR5 frame buffer and a clock speed of 625MHz.
Based on a thermal design power of 37 watts, the E8860 is said to provide up to 92 per cent higher graphics performance per watt than the E6760 GPU – or 61 per cent higher performance than “power-comparable Nvidia GeForce GPUs”, claims AMD.
The GPU also has a PCIe 3.0 interface.
When paired with the AMD R-464L APU, the E8860’s performance in benchmarking utility 3DMark-11 is listed as P2689.
Further details regarding price and availability are yet to be released.

Deus Ex: The Fall has the gall to declare exactly when it'll infiltrate the Steam compound, and that's March 25. The enhanced PC version of the iOS and Android action-RPG will be priced $10 in North America, £8/10 euros in Europe, and pre-orders will snag a copy of Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition as an augmentation. We've reached out to Square Enix to see if there'll be Mac and Linux versions of the port in addition to Windows PC.
In addition to usual Steam doodads like trading cards and achievements, Square Enix says the PC version of The Fall includes AI adjustments, a revised tutorial, controller support, and a Deus Ex: Human Revolution-like toggling between cover styles. One element that's missing from the mobile version is microtransactions, with game economy rebalanced to accommodate. You can find a fuller list of the tweaks and additions here.
Square Enix brought The Fall to iOS and Android last year, and while it's set in the same gold-hued world of Human Revolution, it follows the events of the game's prequel novel, The Icarus Effect, and stars Ben Saxon rather than DX:HRprotagonist Adam Jensen.
While we never asked for this, it'll be interesting to see how n-Fusion's mobile reworking of Eidos Montreal's formula translates back onto PC. In our Portabliss column, Xav de Matos said that although the game is enjoyable, with it "populated world, unenthusiastic story, and drastic dips in quality, Deus Ex: The Fall lacks the same passion that made Human Revolution one of 2011's best video games."
