JoWooD has named Spellbound Entertainment as the new developer for Gothic 4, following its spat with original creator Piranha Bytes.
This next role-playing instalment will be heading to console for the first time in the series, alongside PC, and with a date expected soon.
Spellbound was the brains behind Wild West series Desperados, a strategy action game like the popular Commandos series. It was pretty good, too, as our Desperados 2: Cooper's Revenge review will attest.
Both parties insist the fundamentals of the series will be stuck to, but will be built upon to create the best offering to date. Naturally. More details are expected to be laid out to select press and fans in the next few days.
Gothic 3 was released late last year on PC to hearty applause. Developer Piranha Bytes has since gone on to sign a deal with publisher Deep Silver to create a new unnamed game, where it will use all its experience and knowledge its gained over the years.

Flagship Studios has announced that a subscription to Hellgate: London's prestigious multiplayer mode will cost GBP 6.99 (EUR 9.99) a month.
Forking out will let you found and run guilds, have access to player housing, use in-game emails, and fiddle around with your character using the Internet.
More importantly, it will let you enjoy on-going content patches that will add new character classes, areas, monsters, items and raid content. Even new game modes will be added, such as Roleplay, Hardcore and Player versus Player.
Those of you who don't want to pay the monthly subscription for the full MMO-style package will still be able to play with your friends online. You can join guilds too, as well as trade items and enjoy other community features like integrated voice chat and buddy lists.
Hellgate: London is a first/third-person action role-playing game set in an apocalyptic future where demons romp around unchecked. It features all the sorts of bits and pieces you might expect, like levels, experience, items, events, quests, bundles of customisation, skill trees, and nasty enemies with big teeth that can eat you.
Developer Flagship is made up of staff responsible for the excellent Diablo games, who left high profile jobs at Blizzard to pursue differing interests. The result is this, which has been snaffled up by EA (via Namco) for a 2nd November European launch.

Ubisoft is the latest publisher to sign up for Microsoft's Games for Windows, as it brings The Settlers: Rise of an Empire to the PC gaming initiative.
The French giant now joins publishers such as Activision, 2K Games, EA and LucasArts who have already committed to the Games for Windows brand.
"Today we and our partners announced several products that dramatically improve the experience - and fun - for Windows gamers," said Kevin Unangst, global director of Games for Windows at Microsoft.
"The addition of Ubisoft to the Games for Windows program and the continued innovation in PC gaming hardware is a huge win for gamers around the world who are experiencing the revival of the PC as a world-class gaming platform."

Command & Conquer, Warhammer: Mark of Chaos, Battle for Middle-Earth; they've all made the jump from PC RTS to console strategy game, but strategy opus Total War wont be following their lead, Creative Assembly has told CVG.
"It would be very, very difficult to make anything close to Total War on consoles," studio director Mike Simpson answered us bluntly. "You'd have to change too much about it to make it work" He's probably right too, if you ask us.
The company isn't against the idea of a console RTS though; Simpson says there's "no theoretical reason" developers can't make a good RTS game with a joypad. "They haven't done it yet though."
"There were a few RTS games developers ported to consoles - and they did it really badly," he said. "Then pretty much the whole market said 'whoa - you can't do RTS games on consoles'. But it's because they were ports - bad ports."
"If you're going to do a strategy game for consoles, you have to design it for consoles," he said. Creative Assembly announced its new Total War PC instalment, Empire: Total War, at Games Convention today. "It's a revolutionary step forward for the game engine," said Simpson.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars finally arrives on September 28 here in Old Blighty (well, the PC version does anyway), but in the meantime you can clap your eyes on the latest screenshot deluge and new trailer that's shot its way out the Leipzig Games Convention.
Versions of Quake Wars are also in development for PS3 and Xbox 360, but there's no confirmed release date for those yet. Will they make it this year? We have our doubts, but you never know.

After all the fuss kicked up over the supposedly US-only Call of Duty 4 multiplayer beta, it looks like it might be coming to Europe after all.
Stuttering for words, Infinity Ward president Grant Collier told CVG, "we want to make the beta as big as possible and open it up to as many people as possible. Someone started a rumour that it was US only but that's not the case - it's just starting in the US. We're going to constantly add."
He refused to comment on the fair assumption that the beta will come to Europe eventually, but did add that Infinity Ward is "driven to getting as many people into the beta as possible. Yes, then.
When it finally does arrive, the multiplayer beta will have three maps and 65 character "levels", as part of Call of Duty 4's new character building element. There'll also be a variety of weapons, Infinity Ward says, "but not all of them".
We're off to have our first hands-on session (and even more sausages) shortly, so look out for impressions soon.

For its latest Brothers in Arms game, Gearbox has decided to focus on Operation Market-Garden, the ambitious but ill-fated land and airborne operation by the Allied forces that if successful would bring a swift end to the war.

A few moons back - well, many moons really - Microsoft decided to call it a day on its Sidewinder-branded PC peripherals, but they're back, with a new gaming mouse spearheading the SideWinder resurgence.
According to Microsoft, the SideWinder Mouse "defines customised gaming control" and has been created to "meet gamers' individual needs, providing custom tuning tools and a design for ultimate handling".
It also says it's a product that "transcends the mouse category to become a customisable gaming system." Crikey.
"Features include one-touch access to Windows Vista Games Explorer, Quick Turn - a performance-enhancing macro that lets users check their perimeter from wherever they are in-game - the first-ever LCD on a gaming mouse, and a cable anchor that doubles as an accessories storage box", Microsoft adds.
Supposedly there should be further details on the SideWinder Mouse here, but, er, there isn't at the moment so you can hit the link further up the page, or go for this option - we've done a bit of copy and paste and listed what Microsoft has said about the hardware below. So far the mouse only has a US release date of October and will cost $80.

Here we have new (ish) screenshots from Far Cry 2, many of which are used to show off the new game engine Ubisoft has developed for the first-person shooter sequel. Obviously a gameplay movie would give us far clearer idea of the qualities of the technology, but just look at that burning tree. It's hot! Ahem.

Far Cry and Crysis developer Crytek has threatened to uproot its operations in Germany and set up camp in another country if a proposed move to outlaw violent games comes to fruition.
Speaking in an interview with Welt Online, translated by heise.de, Crytek founder Avni Yerli said that contingency relocation plans had already been drawn up incase a new move by The Conference of Interior Ministers (IMK) to ban 'violence dominated titles' came into play.
"We would leave Germany," Yerli said. "Budapest is a lovely city. We already have a branch office there." Yerli also noted that the company has been sounded out by governmental departments of other countries such as England, Scotland, Austria and Singapore concerning a move.
Back in May, the IMK unanimously decided to ban the production and distribution of 'violence glorifying games'. With 'violence dominated games' now also under the spotlight, Germany could lose one of Europe's most prominent developers.

Game blog GameOfTheBlog is right. Yesterday when we posted the FOUR THOUSAND DOLLAR [about £2,017] arcade PC rig, we totally missed the big picture. That many dollar signs can do that to ya! That same company is also offering up translucent polymer arcade cabinet that can be gold, platinum or chrome plated *and* has that FOUR THOUSAND DOLLAR arcade PC rig already in it. Called the Official Game Haven Crystalcade, here's a quick rundown of how tricked out it is:
• Features a 350 watt Dolby THX surround system with 8" subwoofer
• Optional add-on controllers include Steering Wheel/Foot Pedal, Game Bridge for Xbox/PS2/Cable TV compatibility, DDR Pro Game Pad, Launch Pad Golf Simulator and WIreless Karaoke Magic System with 2,000 songs
• Jukebox software
• Compatible with Windows XP
• 21" flat screen monitor
It comes packaged with old games like Galaga, Rampage, NARC, Dragon's Lair, a buncha old 2600 games and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005. Non-sequitur! This seems designed for people who really, really hate gaming.

People are keen for the PC version of BioShock. They're gagging for it. This being the internets, some were bound to try and bend the rules to get hold of it early. That's what happened on IGN's Direct2Drive, where a bunch of people found a way to pre-purchase the game AND start playing it, without waiting for the game's official release date. Some may have pulled it off, but most had their downloads cut off when IGN detected the loophole. End of story, right? These were all paying customers, this is the internet, Direct2Drive improve their security and we move on. Right? Nope! IGN have tried to bring the hammer down, sending the following email to all users they detected jumping the queue and trying to get the game early.

According to Jeff Strain, co-founder or Guild Wars developer ArenaNet, basing an MMO on an existing film, TV or book franchise won’t lead to success in the genre.
"Even the big two [franchises] haven't lived up to their expectations," he said in a Games Convention Developers Conference session, and went on to point out that the top two MMOs are based on original worlds, unrestricted by the linear nature of products designed for other media.
He went on to add that most games fail because of the social nature of the genre, and because gamers rarely commit to more than one at a time.
"The primary factor that determines whether an MMO lives or dies is the active player base," said Strain. "There's a sweet spot, and those that don’t reach that threshold tend to die within a short time."
While there's a myriad of reasons that players will migrate away from any MMO, according to Strain, signs that there may be problems can be seen even before release.
"Releasing an MMO before everybody on the development team is absolutely proud of it is walking away from every dime you've invested in it."
Strain also talked about the impact that Blizzard’s World of Warcraft game has had on the industry, but warned against trying to follow the company’s methods too closely.
"The best-placed people to create World of Warcraft's successor, it's the World of Warcraft team. Let's all do our own thing, and be good at it."
"It's not the most innovate product on the market, but it has a tremendous amount of content in it, and it's exceptionally polished. It was in development for five years, and probably cost well in excess of USD 40 million to bring to market."
Finally he took a swipe at the notion that subscription models are the only payment solution for MMOs. "Don't count on subscriptions. The subscription model is not the future of the games industry."
"Gamers don’t buy the argument that an MMO has to charge a subscription fee to cover the ongoing cost of servers and development. We know it, and they know it."

2K Games has announced that the PC demo for BioShock will be released tonight at midnight.
You can pre-load it over on Fileplanet, or keep your eyes on the official BioShock community site The Cult of Rapture for a list of download locations.
The Xbox 360 demo was released last Monday and weighed in at around 1.35GB. Many reported a lengthy wait thanks to enormously high demand.
The full game is due out this Friday and is a must buy for PC and Xbox 360. We gave it top marks in our recent review, and have a strong hunch it will walk away with numerous game of the year awards.
