Command & Conquer, Warhammer: Mark of Chaos, Battle for Middle-Earth; they've all made the jump from PC RTS to console strategy game, but strategy opus Total War wont be following their lead, Creative Assembly has told CVG.
"It would be very, very difficult to make anything close to Total War on consoles," studio director Mike Simpson answered us bluntly. "You'd have to change too much about it to make it work" He's probably right too, if you ask us.
The company isn't against the idea of a console RTS though; Simpson says there's "no theoretical reason" developers can't make a good RTS game with a joypad. "They haven't done it yet though."
"There were a few RTS games developers ported to consoles - and they did it really badly," he said. "Then pretty much the whole market said 'whoa - you can't do RTS games on consoles'. But it's because they were ports - bad ports."
"If you're going to do a strategy game for consoles, you have to design it for consoles," he said.
Creative Assembly announced its new Total War PC instalment, Empire: Total War, at Games Convention today. "It's a revolutionary step forward for the game engine," said Simpson.
