A PC demo of Petroglyph's RTS game Universe at War: Earth Assault has been released into the internet wild.
The demo, weighing in at 1.15GB, features one of those tutorial things and two single-player missions from one of the game's campaigns. Download it here.
Universe at War is currently expected in January 2008. The game, releasing on PC and Xbox 360, features a good old-fashioned alien invasion of Earth scenario, and it's only the first instalment in a series that Petroglyph plans.

A demo for the latest game in the Fireglow's Sudden Strike WWII RTS series, Sudden Strike 3: Arms for Victory, is now out for download.
Sudden Strike 3 apparently "will push the boundaries of the RTS genre with some notable interface innovations, huge troop numbers [battlefields can handle up to 1000 units] and enormous map designs that will demonstrate that size does matter."
You can download the demo from this mirror site..
Sudden Strike 3's single-player action is spread over six campaigns with British, American and Russian, German and Japanese land, air and naval forces represented.
It appears the sequel's slipped slightly to early December (it was originally expected at the end of this month).
Keep eyes glued to CVG for a saucy Sudden Strike 3-related competition hitting the site soon.

Gamasutra is reporting that, along with Vivendi's ever-increasing earnings, recent information has been released updating the current player stats for World of Warcraft. Despite suspicions of falling numbers due to the long wait between now and Rise of the Lich King, Blizzard's Massive title is larger than ever, with some 9.3 million players.
"Vivendi has chalked up the increase not only to its WoW subscriber base, but the release of its The Burning Crusade expansion, which saw release in China in the latter part of the third quarter ... The company also noted that its subscriber base has continued to grow from the 9 million mark it celebrated in July to more than 9.3 million, which it says is up more than one million subscribers since December 31 of last year."

Blizzard has rolled its latest content update out across US World of Warcraft servers. Its European counterparts will follow soon.
Patch 2.3 brings with it a whole host of goodies, including a new dungeon called Zul'Aman; guild banks; faster levelling from 1-60; fresh Honour, Badge of Justice and gladiator rewards; and schematics for Engineers to build their own flying mounts.
There are also lots of fixes and tweaks to absorb, including the usual class, item and world fiddles. Better pop over to the official site for those, because it will take me all day to describe them.

EverQuest II expansion Rise of Kunark and EverQuest expansion Secrets of Faydwer are out now.
Kunark boosts the level cap to 80 and adds a whole new continent of quests to complete and items to collect. There is a new playable race in the Sarnak, too, loads of fresh monsters to kill and plenty of raid content for those of you over level 65.
If you buy this in shops or on Sony Online Entertainment's site, you will be given the original EverQuest II game and all the expansions to date. Wait, you will also get a cockatrice for your house and the Legends of Norrath card game with a starter pack, booster pack and a loot item.
Meanwhile Faydwer expands the frankly ancient MMORPG EverQuest by upping the level limit to 80 and adding around 15 new areas to explore - copycat.
Buy this one and you will get all 14 expansions to date, a ridable dog thing called a worg as well as the Legends of Norrath card game.

Valve has begun a new Steam Hardware Survey to check out what sort of PC you play on.
It is optional, of course, and lets the developer stroke its chin as it absorbs the data - deciding what it needs to support and how high-end it should make things.
Current results show that you clearly have too much money to spend on these things - chiefly Nvidia and Intel.
If you really feel a little educational you can have a nose around the survey results from the spring and plot yourself a graph to see what has changed. We did this earlier and had amazing fun.
The survey coincides with a Steam client update made up of various niggling bug-fixes, the biggest being to remedy pre-loaded versions of Call of Duty 4: Modern CombaWARFAREIMEANTWARFARE refusing to launch. Oops.

We honestly didn't know what to expect from Wal-Mart's $200 Everex gPC, but it looks like the early results of putting Linux in front of Middle America are overwhelmingly positive -- Wal-Mart's online warehouse has already sold out of the cheapo Linux box, and users both savvy and new are filing enthusiastic reviews. Of course, it's still early and we can't imagine anyone getting too down on a $200 computer, but it certainly looks like Team Ubuntu is making a strong play to shift the balance in those OS wars.

New Playable Faction - The Seraphim will offer a completely new playable faction in multiplayer games and serve as the main threat during the new single-player campaign. The Seraphim are a cunning and devious race with advanced technology and are true masters of quantum technology.
New weapons, new strategies, new conquests!

Warfare on an Epic Scale - Fully realized navies, orbital weaponry, advanced counter intelligence technologies, suicide weapons and sneak attacks give commanders unprecedented, deadly new capabilities in what is already the most strategic RTS on the market today.
New Multiplayer Maps - 12 new multiplayer maps provide new battlegrounds or players to prove their supremacy.
description
Forged Alliance picks up the story a few years after the conclusion of the original Supreme Commander. Having finally ended the Infinite War, the first game's three factions suddenly face a new threat, this time in the form of the Seraphim: extra-dimensional aliens bent on the destruction of the human race. Taking a severe, alien-style drubbing in their early, separate engagements, Supreme Commander's old enemies join forces (hence the subtitle) and prepare to go out like Spartans in the face of a latter-day Xerxes.

Telltale Games has released the first episode of Sam & Max: Season Two, Ice Station Santa, and of course there's a demo to go along with it.
You can buy it and grab the demo via Telltale's website.
As you may remember from Season One, episodes cost USD 8.95 a pop, or you can pay USD 34.95 for the full, in this case five-episode season.
According to Telltale's synopsis, Ice Station Santa sees Sam & Max (Freelance Police - do keep up) jetting off to the North Pole "to bring down a less-than-jolly foe".
"Can the Freelance Police make sense of this Christmas conundrum in time to save the world's children from a holiday tainted by tears, turmoil, and Torture-Me-Elmer? Find out in Ice Station Santa."
Our review should be up soonish. Presumably. We're so slack! Season One is available now as six individual episodes, one of which is now free, and you can buy a boxed version in the shops.

Paradox Interactive has revealed that Europa Universalis: Rome will support up to 32 of you online.
Each of you will be able to pick from one of 53 factions based around 10 different cultures like Roman, Celtic, Greek and Egyptian, and then battle for dominance of Europe on a big Risk-like map - which is now in fancy 3D.
Europa Universalis: Rome is like Total War but without the commander battle-bit, and is based around the formation of the Roman Empire in the years 280 - 27 B.C.
To be successful you will have to develop your key characters and their traits so you can successfully trade, negotiate or face-kill your neighbours. Researching new technology for your settlements and making lots of money is obviously on the cards, too.
The series is known for its complexity and freedom of choice, but Paradox has said it is working hard to offer more hand-holding features this time for newcomers.
Paradox has also told us that consoles segmenting the market has helped its niche titles find success - quite the opposite of the PC decline observers have been lamenting.

Microsoft looks to have a "v2.0" version of its Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 in the works -- if these recently-filed FCC docs have any semblance of truth. The new model looks to be toning down the odd tilt of the original, and tossing in an abudance of gold spray paint, but we're otherwise pretty short on facts for this one. Still, lasers. You can't go wrong with lasers.
