Flagship Studios is taking down the Hellgate: London servers this afternoon to add some special content for "Guy Fawkes' Night", a holiday still celebrated in England.
It will add a slew of themed things to see and do for subscribers, as well as reward non-payers with the Elite difficulty for a real man's challenge.
Subscribers can expect to be able to hunt down some new named monsters that have bigger teeth than normal, get their hands on grenades to throw around festively, enjoy numerous new recipes and schematics, eat sticky and sweet things like toffee apples, and revel in themed equipment dropped by dying monsters.
There will also be lots of visual treats to get you in the spirit, like big bonfires and all that. However, all of this - including the Elite mode for non-subscribers - will disappear on 11th November, so make sure you don't tarry.
Hellgate: London was released last Friday and got a pat on the back from us for its compelling blend of action and role-playing. We are also currently running a competition to give away the game and PC to play it on, so you might want to check that out

THQ appears to have signed the the trademark rights to the Homeworld series of games.
Eagle-eyed forumites on Relic News spotted the August filing (in turn spotted by Shacknews), which shows the Homeworld name pass from Vivendi to THQ and get lots of new attorneys to represent it in the process.
No mention is made of IP ownership, however, but it seems bonkers to believe one would go without the other.
Homeworld is a real-time strategy game developed by Relic Entertainment. It takes place in space and lets you command an enormous fleet in a 3D plane, a bit like holding a spaceship toy in your hand amid a hanging mobile of planets and pretending it is real and you aren't moving it with your arms.
THQ acquired developer Relic back in 2004 and has since released the critically acclaimed Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and Company of Heroes series of games.
Neither THQ nor Vivendi was available to comment at time of writing, but it would seem logical to conclude - if the licence has changed hands - that a new Homeworld game is in the pipeline.

Frogster and Kylotonn's PC remake of Speedball 2 - recently renamed "Speedball 2 - Tournament" - is set to be sold through Steam at the end of November.
The game's due for release at retail in the autumn and will, for better or worse, use the same authentication technology as Steam operator Valve's Orange Box.
Speedball 2 - Tournament is (fairly obviously) a remake of the Amiga classic of the same name. We visited Kylotonn a little while back to see what it's like and discuss its plans, and you can catch up on that and check out videos and other bits and bobs on the Speedball 2 - Tournament gamepage.
Just make sure you don't mistake this one for the Xbox Live Arcade release, Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe, which is a straight port with some updated graphical options. Confusing, eh?

There's more chatter over a possible Elder Scrolls MMO this morning, as crafty internet dwellers have discovered Bethesda's registration of elderscrollsonline.com.
The website's currently a dead end and Bethesda's Pete Hines says it's just nabbing URLs to prevent squatters getting their first.
Adding to the speculation though is Bethesda parent ZeniMax's recent commitment to MMO development.
Last week the company said it will be using funds from Providence Equity Partners for "future growth, increased game development and publishing, facilitation of acquisitions, and financing of massively multiplayer online games."
The investment follows the formation of ZeniMax Online, a dedicated MMO division headed up by former Mythic producer Matt Firor, whose work includes Dark Age of Camelot. ZeniMax Online's project is currently under wraps but who knows, Bethesda could be loaning out its IP to the more experience online dev.
Hines, expectedly, is keeping quiet on what the MMO is, but FallOut 3's still due for release next year.

MSNBC has this really good article up on the future of PC's in Japan.
TOKYO - Masaya Igarashi wants $200 headphones for his new iPod Touch, and he’s torn between Nintendo Co.’s Wii and Sony’s PlayStation 3 game consoles. When he has saved up again, he plans to splurge on a digital camera or flat-screen TV.
There’s one conspicuous omission from the college student’s shopping list: a new computer.

Newly released from Play Asia
features
English text with Japanese voice
OS: Windows 98, Me, 2000, XP, Vista
Including the Bazooka Cafe Valentine Special
description
My dad was getting old, so I suppose I should have expected him to eventually collapse like he did the other day. His beloved cafe wouldn't stand his absence while he recovered in bed, though, so I knew my duty - I gave notice at the office job I'd worked since graduating college, and entered the whole new world of cafe management! Cocoa, a girl who worked here part time in the past, has helped me out a lot by coming back to her waitress job while I learn the ropes. We were still just scraping by, until one day my former co-worker Mitsuki stopped by with an offer to work part-time at the cafe as well! Cocoa wasn't too happy, but we needed the help, so I gladly accepted. Little did I know that she wouldn't be the last busty beauty vying for my attention - and that of the customers!
Before I knew it, I found myself surrounded by four of the women most important to me in my life. It's wonderful to have them here, and without their help the cafe would be in shambles - but I could do without the stress caused by dealing with the four of them at once! I'm just lucky they're more than willing to help me relax at the end of a hard day's work...
Bazooka Cafe (Japanese title Pururun Cafe, the "pururun" connoting a bouncing, bobbling or swaying, pudding-like sensation) is an interactive multi-scenario dating-sim game for adults that explores life as the manager of a very well-endowed Japanese maid cafe. A kyonyuu (big-breasted) romantic comedy with great art from Kohaku Sumeragi, plenty of fun sex, and situational humor, this is a game that you won't want to miss!
G-Collections is proud to announce that we'll be including the Bazooka Cafe Valentine Special with our release of the game, an extra scenario that answers the question "what if you didn't have to choose?" A special bonus we've arranged to bring you straight from Japanese maker Trabulance!

It’s been a while since we featured one, but as Dan of Dans Remakes has recently dropped us a line to tell us about it, it’d be rude not to.
Yes, it’s a Space Invaders remake, and all said and done - it looks pretty sweet. I love the way the graphics are designed to make the game look like it’s running on an overlay. Neat touch.
They’re invading my space :=(
Of course, it’s all in how the game plays and Dans remake is pretty smart. It’s also available in Mac and Linux flavours so you can’t really knock that.
Ah, the joys of Blitz Max.

I came across a nifty little game today while visiting The Underside Blog - it's a platform RPG hybrid called Final Vision. It seems to be fairly light on plot elements, but the rest isn't bad - the graphics and music are good and the gameplay is pretty solid. The gist of it is that you're the King in a small Kingdom surrounded by rebels trying to kill you. Near the start of the game you can choose from a standard Final Fantasy inspired job class and from then on you set off wandering about looking for rebels to dispatch.
It's always nice to see RPG elements mixed into other genres - this in particular is a combination that works really well.

It only been a short little while since Gutsy Gibbon (otherwise known as Ubuntu 7.10) made its way into hearts and hard drives around the world, but the folks at the Ubuntu Dev Summit are already dropping details on the next release, charmingly dubbed "Hardy Heron."
According to Ars Technica, the overarching focus with Heron will be on robustness, as it's apparently intended to be supported for a full three years. Among the more specific changes you can expect to see is an improved Compiz window manager, which was pegged as one area needing a boost in usability, along with updated PolicyKit and Tracker tools.
Not surprisingly, Heron is also apparently "likely to see a complete visual refresh," including a whole new icon theme that'll use more SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) and bring things more in line with the Tango icons used by GNOME. Of course, all that is still quite a ways off, so if you haven't yet gone Ubuntu, there's no reason not to give the Gibbon a shot.

Warhammer Online will not appear in the shops until sometime between April and June next year, a few months later than its previous Q1 2008 date.
EA Mythic declared in an open letter to its fans that it had extended its development simply because it will not rush the game to release.
"When we looked at our options, two paths lay before us: 1) Ship the game on time with fewer features and less polish, or 2) Extend the development cycle and spend the needed time and money to make WAR great," said Mark Jacobs, EA Mythic boss, in a statement.
"We chose the latter path - to invest additional time and effort in implementation and polish to make WAR great."
Jacobs also wanted to reassure us that the fuss made over recent lay-offs within the company was nothing to be alarmed about. It was all perfectly normal developer behaviour, and the small number culled will have no impact on the release schedule at all.
Early last month EA Mythic closed its beta servers so that it could take all of your feedback, make lots of changes, and then give you lots of new bits and pieces to test.
These will be new careers to progress through, fresh cities to siege and explore, as well as more community options to manage your guilds and keep in contact with your friends.
Jacobs and team will also be polishing up its star attraction, Realm versus Realm combat - like Player versus Player combat only on a much bigger scale. Show off.
Changes here will be made to the Server Rule Set, hopefully pushing everything closer to the open field and enormous battles promised since conception - something you will be able to choose to take part in or not.

Electronic Arts is working to change the way it goes about making games - with a view to releasing higher quality titles, and "games that players really want to play".
That's according to Mark Jacobs, boss of the firm's EA Mythic division, which earlier today delayed its forthcoming Warhammer massively multiplayer game by three months in order to spend more time polishing the game's features to a rich, lustrous shine.
Speaking to Eurogamer this afternoon, Jacobs said that part of EA's new philosophy is "talking to the community, getting their feedback, and being involved" - and praised the company's CEO, John Riccitiello, for focusing on allowing studios such as Mythic, Pandemic and Bioware to "make great games".
According to Jacobs, the decision to delay Warhammer was made based on feedback from players in the beta, with some changes planned to the game's player-vs-player modes as well as a hefty dose of overall polish.
"No game has launched badly from a technical standpoint and ever recovered," he explained. "If you launch badly, it's tough to come back." If you're nodding and looking a little bit sad at that sentiment, we're guessing you worked on Star Wars Galaxies - or maybe just played it at launch...
You can read our full shake-down of Mark Jacobs on the reasons for the delay, the plans for the beta program and how he has sleepovers for the Games Workshop guys in his house (well, sort of), right over here.

Konami has patched the PC version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 to do sort out latency issues and correct other minor issues.
One of the tweaks made to the game also makes sure the speed with which the power bar fills up is now consistent. Consistent with what, it doesn't say. Bears perhaps.
Some small mistakes in the in-game text are also fixed. Happy days. You can download the patch from Konami's website.

Disney Interactive sends word that its re-imagining of previously-rubbish dinosaur shooter Turok is no longer limited to PS3 and 360 - owners of stupidly expensive PCs can play it as well.
Porting duties are being handled by Aspyr Studios (we've no idea who they are either) and the PC version will arrive in "Spring 2008", shortly after the February console release.
The new Turok, in case you missed previous PR explosions, once again puts you in the mould of Joseph Turok, only this time you're a hard-as-nails elite special forces commando, trawling through a mysterious planet fighting space pirates and mauling the odd dinosaur here and there. It looks very pretty.
16-player multiplayer is promised for all versions, and we should have some idea how it's turning out in the next few weeks running up to release. We're crossing our fingers really hard in the hope that it isn't s**t.

Those of you eagerly awaiting Empire Earth III will be able to taste a mouthful of gameplay in a new demo today.
Simply pop over to the website and then sit there patiently; the links are still greyed out like in that film Pleasantville, you see, and we expect they won't turn into colour until the US wakes up a bit later today.
Empire Earth is a real-time strategy series from Mad Doc software that has come off worst in sales wars against titles Age of Empires and Rise of Nations in the past.
But the developer has acknowledged it was probably a bit fiddly and complicated and sought to rectify it all by overhauling the entire thing.
The biggest new addition is a world-domination game mode like you have seen in things like Total War - complete with settlement management, and it is also a much simpler and more accessible affair this time around.
It left us with a very positive feeling when we went to see it in October. Pop over to our Empire Earth III preview to find out more.

Following on from yesterday's exciting news about Viva Piñata: Party Animals squaring up to roundly smash the hanging casket of our dreams over the fires of despair, Microsoft has announced that Viva Piñata will be released on PC on 16th November as well!
Available for both Windows XP and Vista, it's part of the "Games for Windows" motherbrand, which means that - like the Xbox 360 version from last year - it will have 1000 Gamerpoints to unlock by doing clever things like getting the animals to have it off and getting all the totem pole bits.
Viva Piñata is, if you want to be humourless about it, a garden management game where you have to try and attract lots of friendly piñata animals to come live with you by satisfying their fussy requirements. You can also famously get them to mate and create baby piñata, and if you smash one egg at the right time you can make one with two heads, and then three, and you should give money to the beggar too. It's also got the loveliest music and graphics of anything we can remember since the good old days before dropships and normal mapping and EA Trax.
Look out for our (barring any last-minute catastrophes) excitable review of the PC version, developed by Climax, since we should probably mention that, in the very near future! Or, read our Viva Piñata Xbox 360 review to find out why we found it so charming in the first place

Midway has confirmed on its official website that the PC version of Unreal Tournament III will be out in the US on 19th November.
European confirmation is expected at UT3 event in the UK next week, where we will be able to play the game and chat to people from Epic.
However, judging from comments made by Midway recently that it would be out "very close" to the Australian date of 15th November, we can probably expect it on either the 16th or 23rd.
But unfortunately there is still no word on when the PS3 version will be on shop shelves, following Mark Rein's comments last week that it was "too early to know" whether it would be released this side of Christmas.
An Xbox 360 offering is still also planned, but will arrive later due to an exclusivity arrangement with Sony.

EA has signed up more Hollywood talent to appear in Command & Conquer 3 expansion Kane's Wrath.
Natasha Henstridge is first on board and is best known for her sultry starring role in the Species trilogy of films. She will be joined in the recording studio by Alias regular Carl Lumbly, who you can see a youthful side of in daytime Cagney & Lacey repeats.
Their theatrics will sit nicely alongside returning Command & Conquer veteran Joe Kucan, who won us all over years ago with his original performance as Brotherhood of Nod commander Kane.
Kane's Wrath tells the story of the Brotherhood rise to power after the Second Tiberium War, and apparently we're in for something really unique in the campaign this time around.
It will also introduce lots of new gameplay bits and bobs. There is a new risk-like global strategy map to to conquer, by pushing your forces around the world before hopping into the familiar RTS commander's chair for individual battles.
The Xbox 360 version is also getting a revamped control system based around a radial interface, which is supposed to make everything much easier.
On top of all this are six new sub-factions to play around with, and loads of new units, structures and powers for the GDI, Nod and Scrin factions.
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars was released on PC in March and Xbox 360 in May. While it doesn't feature the same depth as something like Supreme Commander or Total War, for fast and fun battles it can barely be topped.
Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath is due for release on PC and Xbox 360 next spring.

It's not the first to boast of a 320GB 2.5-inch hard drive, but Western Digital looks to be the first to actually ship one, with its new 320GB Scorpio SATA drive now available to anyone with a hankering for some spacious portable storage. In addition to cramming all those gigabytes into a laptop-friendly package, the drive is also said to be "one of the quietest 5400 RPM, 2.5-inch drives available," with WD's trademark WhisperDrive and IntelliSeek technology promising to keep the noise down and the power consumption to a minimum. Those looking to swap out their old drive for this one can expect to pay an even $200 [£96], although you can be sure you'll be seeing it as a pre-installed option before too long as well.
This 2.5'' 320GB hard drive would be a great replacement of the Playstation 3's standard 20/40/60/80GB one, that's for sure.

Fingers crossed we could be looking at the new KOTOR game. MMO or not? Something's happening in the board room. PLease God, let it be the next KOTOR game. Star Wars-related at least!
A release says that the product, details of which will be unveiled at a later date, will be developed and published by BioWare and LucasArts, and "will push the boundaries of the gaming market by utilising the strengths of both companies to deliver an innovative, high-quality experience."
We're getting dizzy just thinking about it. A KOTOR MMO has been rumoured before, could this be it? Although quite how this fits in with the recent EA buyout of BioWare and Sega's Sonic RPG, we don't know...
"LucasArts has a deep commitment to developing compelling stories and characters for the unique medium of interactive entertainment, and we have been searching for a developer that shares this value. We found this in BioWare," said Jim Ward, president of LucasArts. "Through our previous collaborations, we know that BioWare has an impressive ability to blend gripping stories with technological advancements, and we believe that our upcoming product will deliver an experience that will span the traditional boundaries of video game entertainment."
Greg Zeschuk, president of BioWare, added, "BioWare's mission is to deliver the best story and character-driven games in the world, delivering powerful emotional experiences to our fans. The collaboration with LucasArts allows us to combine our passion for creating high quality and innovative experiences with those of a company dedicated to bringing only the finest games to market."
