A general bit of silliness for your Wednesday morning - William Shatner and Mr. T. have recorded TV commercials for World of Warcraft, and these are currently on show on the official North Amercian WoW site.
"I'm William Shatner, and I'm a shaman". We never thought we'd hear Captain Kirk say it...
View the commercials for yourself right here.

Martin Slater, lead programmer at 2K Australia which worked on the PC version of Bioshock, has been speaking about DirectX 10 and how it "offers your gameplay nothing".
Reported on Kotaku, Slater spoke about DX10 while conducting a post-mortem of Bioshock at the recent GameConnect 07.
"DirectX 10," he said, "probably for the next three, four, five years is not important to you. Microsoft are going to tell you everything under the sun differently. Everybody under the sun is going to tell you differently."
Slater's comment reminds us of Mark Rein's thoughts on DirectX 10, when the Epic boss told us earlier in the year he reckons we won't see it fully utilised in PC games until the next console generation.
"Consoles will pretty much define what the next five years of games look like on the PC", Rein said in July.
Slater, on a more positive note, went on to call DirectX 10 a beautiful place "for all your game programmers".

Online gaming website Tournament.com has closed down with immediate effect, ceasing all competitive activities, and putting players on notice to contact site administrators to claim any cash that may have been in account wallets.
The site, which launched in May this year, had acquired the exclusive rights from Valve for the ongoing competitive use of Counter-Strike Source, which prompted cease and desist orders on other sites using the game.
Philip Wride, managing director of Elysium Gaming, told GamesIndustry.biz that the failure of the business was a clear indication that further work on this kind of business model was needed.
"It's one of those services for gamers that gamers don't necessarily need in order for them to meet their requirements, in terms of having the places to play. They were trying to offer a service and make gamers pay for the potential opportunity to win something back," he said.
"Now, gamers are notoriously fickle in that if they see an opportunity that will definitely give them a return, they'll go for it.
"If it's a luck-based thing, or even branded as a supposedly skill-based thing, they're more likely to question it and see what everybody else is doing first. And in this sort of market you need everybody on board from the off in order to get the return on investment," said Wride.
"One of the things they'll have struggled with is getting the numbers through the door and getting the gamers to part with their hard-earned cash."
The Tournament.com collapse follows not long after the closure of the World Series of Video Games, although other commercial competitive gaming events, such as CGS and the ESWC seem to be gathering momentum.

Remember how Sandisk was flirting with read-only, cheap-archival storage based on their new "3D memory' back in February? Well, it sounds like they're about to commit.
We just received a tip from a SanDisk customer who took a survey about a proposed write-once memory card. The most interesting new piece of information is the price: a 400 photo, 1GB write-once card for a proposed $5.99 as described by our tipster. We can't vouch for his claims -- nevertheless, what he says is consistent with what we've heard and certainly makes sense. We'll break it down for you as we received it:- The new "memory cards (memory stick)" will be widely available in food, drug, camera, and convenience stores (we already knew that Wal-Mart and Walgreens were involved)
- The new format fits your existing camera
- Large enough to store at least 100 photos per card (does that mean 256MB cards for $2.00 or less?)
- Write-once technology stores your pictures safely for over 100 years (check)
- Less expensive than standard re-writeable memory cards (duh)
- No dates were provided in the survey, but at this point, a near-term launch certainly appears imminent.

New screenshots from Codemasters' Turning Point: Fall of Liberty (out early '08 on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360), have landed on this page.
Set in the early 1950s, Turning Point spins an alternate-reality yarn where the Nazis were triumphant in Europe in World War II and have launched an assault on the US. You play New York City construction worker Dan Carson, who turns reluctant freedom fighter in order to survive the invasion and fight back against the Nazi war machine.
"Always outmanned and outgunned, players must use guerrilla tactics and hand to hand grappling combat as they attempt to stop the world's most notorious war machine", Codemasters has explained.

Developer Flagship will be taking the Hellgate: London servers offline today to implement a new patch.
Downtime is expected for a couple of hours between 4pm and 6pm GMT, after which you should find some new features to play with and plenty of fixes to niggling problems.
Chief among them is access to 24 character slots for absolutely everyone, a privilege previously restricted to those paying a monthly subscription. It benefits those of you eager to tinker with class builds and that sort of stuff, although make sure you realise you cannot use your single-player character online but have to start from scratch - better to make an early start than realise this late on.
Elsewhere there are countless bullet-points mopping up chat, connection, movement, quest, item and other fixes - best pop over to the official site if you want to bone-up on these. Incidentally, Flagship does know about and has a solution to the invisible party member bug, but it just missed out on being included in this update, patch 0.5. Word is to look out for this one soon.
The other message is for you to keep your feedback rolling in, as it helps Flagship know what to address in its on-going patches. Oh, and Guy Fawkes celebrations will be brought to and end, but thank you very much for taking part and we have learnt a lot, says Roper and team.
Hellgate: London is an action role-playing game with a meaty online offering. If you enjoyed Diablo or Titan Quest in the past, then you might want to pop over to our Hellgate review and find out what it is all about.

The original Dungeon Lords - released in 2005 - didn't exactly set the RPG world on fire (review), but that hasn't stopped JoWood announcing a sequel "for a next-gen console platform" and PC today.
Details on Dungeon Lord 2 (working title) are pretty much being kept under wraps currently. A release date is set for Q3 2009.
JoWood has additionally said a standalone expansion (due Q3 2008) for the first game is on the way.
"Not requiring the base game, the Expansion Pack is a complete stand-alone game and will contain an all new story which acts as a link between the original game and the Sequel. The Sequel will deliver an all new graphics and physics engine, a new epic quest and all new art."
Dungeon Lords took its cue from RPG classics such as Diablo and Gothic II, with the primary slant of the game being focused around fast-paced action.

Sketchy role-playing game Two Worlds has undergone a spot of maintenance to fix up some of its glaring errors.
The "megahit", as the statement describes, should now have a much more stable multiplayer mode featuring less lag and more balanced game modes. Whatever that means - it's impossible to tell without patch notes, silly-billies.
But the real clincher is that not only will horses now be easier to control, but if you pay a fine you can re-enter towns you have previously killed in. As you do.
You can download the patch on the official website, although we suggest you find another game to play entirely. It isn't easy being this mean, but when you self-proclaim to be "perfectionists" even though you released a bug-ridden sham of an Oblivion copycat, then you deserve it.

The player's modern-day emotions and fears are driven into a world charged with grave responsibility affecting lives hanging in the balance and eventually finding himself torn between his professional orders and his own ethical standards. We all had fun pouring ourselves over the new Steam hardware survey results last week, but accompanying those were also some Steam stats for Half-Life 2: Episode Two.
Looking back at the equivalent Episode One stats, average total playtime was 4 hours, 1 minute, with average completion time at 5 hours, 36 minutes. 38.82 per cent of people completed the game, although Valve notes that over 50 per cent reached the final map, and suggests that people were quitting before the credits or that there is a bug in how they collected the data.
So how does Episode Two stack up? On the surface of it, not all that differently. Average total playtime is up, but only to 4 hours, 45 minutes, while average completion time is now 6 hours, 12 minutes. The Episode Two stats page doesn't specifically list a completion percentage, but if you check the Achivements monitoring page, some of the Achievements associated with acts at the very end of the game have been unlocked by over 50 per cent of the Steam player-base who have played Episode Two.
So, maybe not what Valve was hoping to hear? It depends how you look at it. Probably the most important detail missing is that we're still only just over a month into the game's life, whereas the Episode One stats page covers a period between 6th June 2006 and this morning. A better comparison, then, would be the stats people first observed on 26th June 2006, at which point the average playtime was just under three hours, with average completion time just over five.
Assuming that a lot of the people who have completed Episode Two on the PC in its first month on sale are hardcore fans of the series, then it seems safer to compare their feats to the early-days stats from Episode One, and to assume that people who come to it slightly later will either take more time or spend more time over it. The early adopter comparison would suggest that Episode Two takes over an hour longer and that most have got an hour and a half more out of it.
What's more, PS3 and Xbox 360 stats are not reflected, and it would be interesting to see how many less fussy Valve fans chose to take home the latter version a couple of days later rather than sitting there at 8am on the morning of the Steam unlock chomping at the bit.
The Episode Two stats page also includes some highly sexual graphs and "death maps", which note where people usually died. You can also observe, as with the Steam hardware survey, who was using which version of DirectX, and which difficulty level people opted for - with over 70 per cent playing through the game on Medium, and just under 18 per cent playing on Easy.

While they don't exactly come as much of a surprise after a couple of leaks and that little website slip-up, Alienware has finally gotten official with is new Area-51 m15x and m17x laptops, which each pack more power than you'll likely need in your choice of two eye-catching designs.
The m15x, as you can no doubt surmise, is a 15.4-inch model, which gives you enough room for dual hard drives, along with your choice of Core 2 Duo Extreme processors, NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX graphics, 667MHz DDR2 memory, and plenty of other high-end specs to match.
The m17x appears to be identical in most respects, but its 17-inch display also affords just enough room for a third hard drive which, as we had heard earlier, can include SSD if you so choose. Still no word on a release date, but Alienware will gladly inform you of that little detail if you're willing to hand over your email address.

Leading PC executives have attempted to allay fears that consoles are threatening PC gaming, although some acknowledged that PC gaming has perhaps become too specialized and needs to appeal to a broader audience.
Representatives from nVidia, Intel, Microsoft, Electronic Arts, and Crytek used nVidia's GeForce LAN 4 event in Alameda, Calif. to ensure consumers that the state of PC gaming is healthy, although there were signs that the proliferation of home consoles which cater to both serious and casual gamers appear to have put the PC gaming industry on the defensive, reports News.com.
NPD statistics show that sales of PC gaming software totalled $970 million in 2006, a dramatic fall from $1.5 billion in 2001. It is believed that the relatively expensive price of PC hardware required to play games, in comparison to that of consoles like Microsoft's Xbox 360, Sony's PlayStation 3 or Nintendo's Wii, is largely to blame.
The PC gaming industry has combated the increased capabilities of next-gen consoles to cater to casual audiences by playing on its unrivalled capacity to deliver increasingly hi-tech titles such as flagship PC game Crysis, said Roy Taylor, nVidia's vice president of content relations.
He then acknowledged that the first-person shooter can't be played at its maximum settings even on many of today's top of the range PCs, forcing consumers to upgrade their systems simply to play the game in all its glory.
"Something needs to be done so a person buying a PC at Wal-Mart could be a PC gamer too," noted Randy Stude, director of Intel's gaming platform office.
He suggested that Intel's integrated graphics chipset, which delivers basic graphics performance for cheaper PCs, could be one solution for getting casual gamers interested in the PC as a gaming platform again.

Crysis a trilogy? Yep, according to Crytek boss Cevat Yerli the developer is planning two more games.
"The game is designed as a trilogy, so you have two more instalments to come and the ending [of Crysis] is planned deliberately. But I cannot answer any more questions here please as we want to keep some surprises for you all", Yerli said in an IRC chat.
Yerli has also said that the first patch for Crysis should be out by the end of the month.
"We are collecting up all the user feedback now and planning patches that will address as much as possible as fast as possible. The first patch will be out in 7-14 days".

While I love Massively Multiplayer games, for a lot of people they've become very rote. When I say "MMOG" you almost certainly think of a fantasy game like World of WarCraft or EverQuest 2; even the most-anticipated in-development titles are fantasy games, like Warhammer Online or Age of Conan. The pre-launch death of Gods and Heroes , though, should be proof enough that the fantasy market is becoming a tough one to crack into. So what's the alternative? Sci-Fi, of course. Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa (TR) dodges these sword and sorcery pitfalls by offering a bleak view of the far future. TR is a departure from the genre standard in a number of ways, with fast-action FPS-like gameplay alongside its alien main course. Though this title isn't the second coming of the Massive genre, it's an enjoyable departure from the norm. Read on for my impressions of the return of Richard Garriott.

According to the latest statistics released by online community and data aggregation tool Xfire, the number of hours spent playing online PC games by its community of over 8 million players fell further in October.
This follows a decline between August and September, which was expected as schools and colleges opened following the summer break, but goes against last year's trend, which saw figures pick up for October.
In total, until October, playing hours for the three most-played games (World of Warcraft, Call of Duty 2 Multiplayer and Counter Strike Source) had grown year on year for most months - August was up 25 per cent year on year, September 19 per cent, but October actually fell by 2 per cent.
Possible reasons for this fall may be down to the release of marketing phenomenon Halo 3 for the Xbox 360, according to Xfire's senior director of marketing, Frederic Descamps.
"We think that the most reasonable explanation is the release of major console titles - Halo 3 came out September 25th - which shows that a lot of Xfire users are console gamers too.
"However with the release of the widely anticipated titles Hellgate: London (October 31) and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (November 5), we have seen a 10 per cent increase in daily gameplay for November as compared to October.
"Call of Duty 4 is already the top first-person shooter, and second game overall on Xfire."
World of Warcraft continued to dominate the total numbers of hours played, with 332,139, followed by Call of Duty 2 Multiplayer on 143,143 and Counter-Strike Source on 109,978.
Eve Online was the second most popular subscription MMO after World of Warcraft, followed by Lord of the Rings Online, Lineage II and Star Wars Galaxies.
The top three most played titles by hours, aggregated for the past three months of 2007, and the same period last year, are as follows:
August 2006: 618,587
September 2006: 546,601
October 2006: 598,441
August 2007: 775,368
September 2007: 648,715
October 2007: 585,260

Revitalised US publisher Interplay has re-opened its internal development studio in an attempt to rekindle some of its old magic.
It can do it because its revenues were up 872 per cent on last year, according to a financial statement by boss Herve Caen - although he accepts it is largely from selling the Fallout property to Bethesda for a rumoured USD 5.75 million.
The result is that we may see the likes of Earthworm Jim, MDK, Clayfighters, Freespace, Kingpin, Sacrifice and more reworked to stoke the fast-burning money oven.
It will need all it can get, too, as it has ambitious plans to create a Fallout MMO requiring a minimum financing of around USD 30 million. A tall task, then, but one Caen has previously said he is busy securing funding to overcome.
Meanwhile Bethesda continues work on Fallout 3 for PC, PS3 and 360, a game tipped by many to be as successful if not more so than acclaimed RPG Oblivion.
