It already seems pretty clear that there are few OSes that won't at least be attempted to be installed on the Eee PC, and it now looks like you can chalk up another of the big ones in successful column, as one fearless user has managed to squish Vista onto the diminutive laptop. To accomplish that feat, Paul O'Brien used the vLite tool to cut out as much bloat as possible before putting the custom disk image onto a USB stick, after which he then installed the OS on the Eee PC and, perhaps most notably, moved the Side by Side (or SxS) directory onto an 8GB SD card, freeing up some much needed space on the laptop itself.
If for some reason you want to try that yourself, you can find complete instructions by hitting up the read link below, or you can live vicariously through the video after the break.
Instructions on how to sqeeze in Windows Vista onto an Eee PC here at Modaco.

Publicly disclosable details about the future of Windows Mobile are still sparse, but we can let the door open a bit wider on what was shown at this year's Mobius with regard to the next two versions of Windows Mobile. We all know that 6.1 is around the corner, but it's the next two versions beyond that which are really interesting. Post-6.1, WinMo will indeed have its app suite revamped, including a desktop-grade port of IE6 to Windows Mobile, which Microsoft is directly targeting mobile Safari with. Likewise, the rest of the consumer-centric apps (photos, media, etc.) as well as the messaging suite will be upgraded to be a bit friendlier. This whole experience won't be too foreign to long-time users, but is the next step in the right direction.
But it's really the Windows Mobile that's two versions out that's the game-changer. Significantly redeveloped, this WinMo will focus on an upgraded user experience with massive changes made to ease of use, as well as new features like global search and data correlation, meaning the device would, for example, know who you're talking to and give you instant access to email from only that person, or maybe a map with that pinpoints their address. Of course, we also know that this version of WM will be a lot more touch-friendly than the stylus-centric experience we're all used to today. Fingers crossed they'll execute on this stuff -- Microsoft's a big company with lots of wonderful ideas that seem to fall out of the truck on the way to the store.

Intel, the company responsible for the majority of processors used in desktop PCs, has spoken to Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo about what chips might power the next round of consoles.
According to a report in Business Week the company, trumped this time around by IBM, is keen not to miss out on the market next time around, and has already been touting the possibilities that its latest hardware might bring to the table.
"We imagine some future generation of [Nintendo's] Wii won't have hand controllers," said Justin Rattner, the company's chief technology officer.
"You just set up the cameras around the room and wave your hand like you're playing tennis."
The hardware that Intel is talking about is capable of 1 trillion calculations per second, while the IBM's Cell processor is slated to hit around 256 billion.

New version of the PC-Engine emulator for Windows 2000, XP and Vista.
Changelog:
- The processing part of "CPU(HuC6280)" and "BG drawing" were sped up. I
think that processing lightened in some measure of a personal computer
environment so not fast.
- Operation speed & timing of CPU has been elaborately adjusted. At "Mugen
Senshi Valis" of the game over scene, the problem that the screen had
occasionally freezed was solved. At "Power Sports (World Sports
Competition)" of the news scene, The disorder of one frame was solved.
I think the operation timing have approached a real machine in other
software, too.
- "Mute PSG Channel 1"-"Mute PSG Channel 6" was added to "Volume" menu. When
"Output WAV file", use it when you want to mute a specific sound (shot
sound and jump sound, etc.).
- In "File->Setting of Output WAV->Start at the Next Tune" menu function, at
the tune to which the sampling sound is multiused, The problem that it was
not occasionally recognized to have moved to the following tune was
corrected.
- The CD-ROM access processing part has been improved. When resetting it
with "SELECT+RUN" button while accessing CD-ROM, the problem that had been
occasionally freezed was solved.
- Processing that decided drawing beginning line was brought close to a real
machine. In "Mizubaku Daibouken (Liquid Kids)" , when the thunder item was
taken, the width of the shake of the screen was brought close to a real
machine. At "Dragon Ball Z" of the opening demo, the problem that the
screen has fallen into disorder was solved.
- In "Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari", when playing with a fast CD-ROM drive
environment, the problem that ADPCM voice of the elder sister in the
bookstore became interrupted occasionally was solved.
- In "Nekketsu Koukou Soccer Hen", the problem that the character display
had occasionally received in the status display part was solved.
- Additionally, a detailed part has been improved and corrected.

For all you Eee users out there who've been trying to squeeze Ubuntu into the little white box, some help is on the way. A kind and enterprising Linux enthusiast has used their precious time and energy to put together an Eee-customized build of the much-loved OS, which includes fully-integrated hardware support, native wireless drivers, functioning Ethernet support, tweaks for low-resolution desktop environments, and a bunch of other little enhancements that will make using Canonical's powerhouse a lot more pleasant on your tiny laptop. Word on the street is that development and refinement continues on the build, so expect improvements as time wears on. Now, if only someone could perfect that Amiga OS build for the Eee...

Fury developer Auran has closed its doors in the wake of yesterday's unveiling of a new free-download, free-play model for its PvP-focussed MMO.
"The Directors of Auran Developments, the company that employs all the Auran staff, have today called in a Voluntary Administrator (like Chapter 11 in the US). All the staff were dismissed today. Despite earlier reports, staff will be paid for all their work to date, their annual leave entitlements, redundancy payments and long service leave", the developer has said in an official statement.
It continued, "With Fury, we built up a team to make a world beating game and sadly we have not reached our goals - yet. Our performance to date has meant we could no longer fund the 70 strong dev team.
"However, Fury: Age of the Chosen will be launched as planned Friday 8pm GMT. We have put together a small but committed team to continue developing Fury on an ongoing basis. This core team, as we announced last week, are a passionate group of people committed to making Fury a success.
"We will be releasing bug fixes, content and feature updates on a regular basis and in fact they will be more frequent with our new agile team.
"I believe that once people hear about F:AotC and the new Free to Play business model, we'll start building up the player numbers and revenues that will make the game successful", Tony Hilliam, now former CEO of Auran, has added.

It's the same old story - if you turn on any version of Unreal Tournament III, you'll look at the graphics and say "wow", and you'll be happy. But there are considerable differences between the two.
As you will have heard, the PS3 version is said to be around 30 percent slower than its PC brother.
Even though the PS3 game supports mouse and keyboard control, not everyone will have that set-up so Epic slowed the game down to accommodate the lower accuracy of analogue stick control.
But it doesn't spoil the game at all. Running side by side, you can see the difference, but we think it's just the right speed for the console version.
There are graphical differences too - running on a super high-end machine, the PC version looks more polished, and runs at 60 frames per second, which Epic chose to lock the still stunning-looking PS3 version to 30 frames.
You'll see some colour differences as well. Deck looks bluer on PC - could just be a graphics card thing.
Here, we take a run through the classic Deck level, and show off some of the Warfare mode to see how they fare. The video is small, granted, but you can see the speed difference, and subtle colour changes between the two versions.

Yesterday, we told you about an offer wherein you could completely sacrifice your privacy for a free software bundle from Microsoft which included Windows Vista Ultimate and Office Ultimate '07, amongst others. Well, apparently the big M has decided to pull the offer of free software -- but still wants to track your digital footsteps and pry into your private dealings. Here's Redmond's official line to those inquiring about the discontinued offer:
"Thank you for your interest in the feedback program. Due to high volume, we have reached our 'while supplies last' limit and have closed our free product incentive on 12/11/2007 at 2pm."
Needless to say, they'd still love to have a look at your browser history, emails, IM logs, crash reports, and blood type.

Not even two months after NVIDIA tempted gamers on a budget with the GeForce 8800 GT, the outfit has loosed a new beast just in time for those eleventh hour holiday shoppers. Based on 65-nanometer fabrication, the 8800 GTS 512MB boasts 128 stream processors, twin dual-link DVI ports, PureVideo HD technology, DirectX 10 support, a 650MHz core clock / 970MHz memory clock and hardware decode acceleration for smooth playback of "H.264, VC-1, WMV and MPEG-2 HD and SD movies."
According to the company, this card provides some 25-percent more processing power than NVIDIA products previously offered at the same price point, which, if you're wondering, is around $299 [£122] to $349 [£171].

Microsoft's been keeping its record pretty clean of late, but we suppose it couldn't end the year without a parting shot meant to cheese off the ultra-private, Microsoft-eats-children types.
The company's latest diabolical plan involves giving away free copies of Windows Vista Ultimate, Office Ultimate '07, Money Plus Premium, Encarta Premium or Streets and Trips -- scary, we know. All you need to do is fill out a few surveys now and then, and download a little app that lets Microsoft watch your every move for three months.
If you can manage to be a good little pod person for that long, you get a free copy of whatever software title you selected in the mail. But really, can you put a price on dignity? Exactly, you can't, so sign us up!

Around a hundred employees at RealNetworks are dealing with the news that their job is no longer available, and about 35 of those positions were in Seattle, Washington while the others were in Asia / Europe. According to company spokesman Bill Hankes, the firm made cuts "across the board to reduce redundancies built up as a result of six acquisitions made over the past two years," and he also added that these were the "first layoffs the company has made since those purchases." As it stands, around 1,700 employees are left, and no further job cuts are "planned."

The IGF 2008 finalists have now been announced, but what of last year's winners? An excellent time to ask, actually, as Seamus McNally Grand Prize 2007 winner Aquaria has just been released. It's as if you knew!
As the Bit Blot website and downloadable demo will aim to explain, players take up the floaty reins of Naija on a quest to find her family in a massive underwater world using a mouse-only control system (or using a 360 pad or a WSAD affair if you're boring).
Friend of Eurogamer Mr Kieron Gillen jerked our heads in its direction over the weekend (fishing for work, he was), remarking over on Rock, Paper, Shotgun that it reminds him of "a cross between Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, old physics-based classic Exile and recent Wii oddity Endless Ocean".
The full version of the game also includes a level editor and modding tools. And if all of that sways you, it's USD 30 as a digital download. As opposed to what? Exactly.
