New version of the Neo Geo CD emulator for Windows and Linux.
Changelog:
* It contains only the changes for samurai spirits rpg.
I am not totally happy with them, because they are specific to this game, and since it's a console, it's not supposed to have specific code for any game, but anyway...

It looks like AMD users hoping to pop one of those speedy new Phenom processors into their old AM2 motherboard for a bit of a boost could be in for some trouble, at least according to the folks at Tom's Hardware, who recently put the processor to the test with ten different mobos. After their usual thorough testing, they found that the processor didn't work well at all with eight out of the ten motherboards, despite earlier promises by AMD to the contrary, and the other two had problems of their own even after a BIOS update. That left them with no other recommendation than to tell folks to hold on to their good 'ol Athlon 64 X2, at least until AMD lets loose the so-called Phenom B3 stepping processor in the second quarter of next year, which should iron out all the bugs, and give motherboard manufacturers time to get their act together as well.

Intel seems like it's going to be making a bigger push at gamers with the launch of Penryn, and HotHardware managed to score some deets on the company's upcoming "Skulltrail" platform, which is built-around server-class hardware reconfigured for gaming. The new mobo pictured here supports dual quad-core Penryn Xeon processors, SLI graphics, and four PCI Express x16 slots, as well as two standard PCI slots. You're also looking at a whopping six internal SATA ports, dual eSATA ports, six USB ports, a lone FireWire port, and Gigabit Ethernet. That's quite a foundation for a gaming rig -- let's just hope pricing is at least pretend reasonable, eh?

We haven't heard all that much from the Classmate PC front lately (at least compared to the OLPC and Eee PC), but it looks like Intel's education-friendly laptop is gaining a bit of ground of its own, with Hacao's take on it now shipping in Vietnam. Students receiving that version of the laptop will get Hacao's own customized Linux distribution (based on Puppy Linux) for an OS, along with the usual 900MHz Celeron processor, 256MB of RAM, 1GB of Flash storage, and a 7-inch WVGA -- plus built-in WiFi, but, as Linux Devices points out, none of the OLPC's fancy mesh networking technology. What's more, it seems that this version won't be entirely limited to students, with it also availble in Vietnamese computer stores for $340 (a slight premium over the $250 apiece it'll cost schools that buy 'em).

While certain notable holdouts have yet to even announce HD disc-based products, it looks like the rest of modern civilization is getting ready to move the discs to an even slimmer set of laptops. Panasonic's latest burner for laptops is down to a mere 9.5mm thick, easily besting the company's previous 12.7mm Blu-ray drives. The drive can read and write Blu-ray discs at 2x, and supports DVD and CD read / write functions aplenty. Toshiba is on record claiming that HD DVD burners can be slimmed down to 7mm and will eventually be besting Blu-ray in this category, but so far only DVD has gone that slim. Panasonic will debut the new drive next month at CES.

Looks like we've got a definitive answer to "How would you change Windows Home Server?" -- make it so it doesn't corrupt data. Microsoft has just posted a Knowledge Base document saying that it's confirmed WHS corrupts various files when saved to the server by certain apps. The bug affects several MS apps, including Money, Outlook 2007, Vista Photo Gallery, Live Photo Gallery, and SyncToy, but it also hits Quicken, Quickbooks, and -- fatally for a media server -- BitTorrent clients. Microsoft says it's working on a fix, but that in the meantime, you should avoid using WHS with these apps.

New Neo Geo CD emulator for Windows and Linux released.
Read the next requirements and other details:
Status
The emulator had to support the format supported by the psp for the games, that is a zip for the game files, and some mp3s for the music. Neoraine also supports a few other formats listed further in this doc, but if you try to use an original neocd cd, it will run the game without music ! That's because I don't support cd music, mainly because I have no easy way to play an audio cd in linux with sdl and hear something (the cdrom drive has no cable to the sound card), and there is no way to play it digitaly. So you'll have to rip the cd in this case, more about this later.
The emulation is fast, but it doesn't try to emulate the raster effects. As a result, "riding hero" is unplayable because they simulate 3d effects using raster interrupts in this game. There might be a way to emulate this without slowing down too much, but sorry I don't have the motivation for this now (and ridhero is not a very good game anyway, which doesn't help the motivation at all !). This is the only known neocd game which can't be played.
By the way there a few improvements compared to the neocdpsp version, and savegames are supported for most games (not all of them, but they are not really necessary because of the memory card, savegames are usefull for debuging mostly).
Differences with raine
I made a separate executable, and a separate makefile (makefile.neocd), but finally there are very little differences :
# There is no game list. When you try to load a game, you just browse files, and select a file to load, there are no known crcs to be checked
# If you change the sample frequency, you'll have to restart neoraine to apply the change. It's to avoid to restart the cd track everytime you call the gui from neoraine. Anyway you should always play at 44 Khz since the audio tracks are at 44 Khz.
# In "Sound options" you can choose music volume and sfx volume now. It's because depending on the game, music can be too low or too loud so it can be usefull to make adjustements. Notice that if you put these 2 to 10 (maximum), you will probably get some distortion...
That's all ! At the begining there were no cheats and no hiscores but finally I noticed that a few neogeo cheats/hiscores work also for the neocd version. Not all of them are working, but quite a few do. The neocd cheat file is named "neocheats.cfg" instead of "cheats.cfg" to allow to have raine and neoraine in the same directory, but they have the same format. For now neocheats.cfg is just a direct conversion of what Stephh had for neogeo, we might release something more specific to neocd later (for example, there are no cheats for mslug for now).
Formats supported for the games
# The games are all in cd format, so neoraine accepts one of these : If you have copied the cd files somewhere, there is an ipl.txt in these files, so neoraine accepts the ipl.txt file directly, this is the most basic format (direct file access).
# You can also zip the contents of the cd, and pass the zip file to neoraine. The zip file must contain an ipl.txt file in its root directory to be accepted.
# Cds in a ripped form will have a cue file, an iso/bin file, and some wav or mp3 files for the audio. So the cue file is supported.
# For the audio files they can be in mp3, ogg, or wav files for the hysterics of the "accurate" audio ! I recommend mp3 for the tracks.
So basically you should have 1 directory / game, with game files + audio files in this directory. Then when you load a game, you browse to this directory and pass the required file (zip or cue usually).
For compatibility with neocdpsp, audio files can also be placed in a neocd.mp3 directory in the game directory. So for example you would have :
Directory: Metal Slug
|- mslug.zip or mslug.cue
|+
|-neocd.mp3
|+ track01.mp3
|-track02.mp3...
If you don't use a cue file with the exact file names of the audio tracks in it, then you must have the track number on 2 digits in the filenames. So track1.mp3 won't be accepted, but "Metal Slug - 01 - Opening.mp3" will be accepted. If you use a cue file then audio filenames can have any format.
Notice that you can run a game from the command line if you want to by passing the main file (zip, cue or ipl.txt) on the command line.
Requirements
You'll need neocd.bin, which is the neocd bios. I can't put it in the neoraine package, but it's quite easy to find on internet. Put either neocd.bin directly in the raine directory (/usr/share/games/raine for unix versions), or neocd.zip if you prefer (the file must be named neocd.bin in the zip file in this case and the crc isn't checked).
Notice that the unix version uses the raine data directory. It's because most of the data files are shared between the 2 of course. For now the debian package of neoraine requires that raine is installed for its data files. I didn't want to make a separate data package just for that... maybe later.
Memory card
The neocd console had a memory card to save progress in the games. In neoraine, there is 1 memory card / game, saved in savedata/[game name].bin. When you get a message telling you that your memory card is not formated and asking you to press button A to format it, just press button 1. It's something to do the 1st time you use a new game. After this your memory card will be automatically reloaded everytime you load the game, and usually it allows you to restart at the level you reached last time. You get a very nice level selector in metal slug when you have this...

Computerworld has reviewed six of the latest hard disk drives that include 32GB and 64GB solid state disks, a low-energy consumption "green" drive and several terabyte-size drives. With the exception of capacity, the solid state disk drives appear to beat spinning disk in every category, from CPU utilization, energy consumption and read/writes. The Samsung SSD drive was the most impressive with a read speed of 100MB/sec and write speed of 80 MB/sec, compared to an average 59MB/sec and 60MB/sec read/write speed for a traditional hard drive.

DisplayPort is the most fun when you snag it on the cheap, and according to some leaked specs over on Madbox PC, AMD has a $50 Radeon in the works that'll have you running that 30-incher off of USB for a pittance. The Radeon HD 3450 card is based on the RV620 core, running at 525MHz, with 256MB of RAM and just a VGA plug to accompany the DisplayPort. The HD 3470 ($60) hits 600MHz and 512MB of RAM, and does DVI, while the HD 3650 ($100) maxes out the trio at 800MHz, with 512MB of RAM as well and the RV635 core to back it up. You might not be thrashing around in Crysis, but HD video and perhaps some last-gen shooters should be totally within your grasp whenever AMD gets these to market.

Rockstar's collection of PC games has gone digital distribution, but they're not going the Steam route. Three Grand Theft Autos, two Max Paynes, a Midnight Club sequel and Manhunt are now available via IGN's Direct2Drive service.
The games are $9.95 apiece except for San Andreas and, inexplicably, the original Manhunt, which go for $19.95. Two sets are available, the Grand Theft Auto collection for $29.95 ($39.85 if all bought separately separately) and the entire Rockstar collection for $59.95 ($89.65 separately). The best part? Digital distribution downloads immediately, no waiting in the pre-holiday traffic. Last-minute Christmas gifts just got more controversial.
