Gadzooks gamers, Samsung just announced what they are calling the world's fastest memory: GDDR5. The new series five, double-data rate memory chip transfers data at a lickity quick 6Gbps -- about 4x faster while using 20% less power than the GDDR3 memory found in modern GPUs and the PS3. Compare that to their 4Gbps GDDR4 chips and you'll understand the fuss. The chips have already been delivered in samples to the likes of NVIDIA and ATI. Samsung expects the series five chips to capture more than 50 percent of the high-end PC graphics market by 2010.

t’s the holiday season, and major game companies have started to release many of their biggest and most expensive titles of the year. While there are sure to be some gems among the general blaring of marketing hype and hyperbole, we felt that this might be a good time to reflect on some of this year’s quieter releases: games that are simple, elegant, fresh, and, best of all, absolutely free.
We’ve scoured the net for this year’s freeware game releases and have compiled a list of ten outstanding free games. Games were selected based on popularity and critical reception at a number of review and discussion sites, as well as a healthy dose of our own personal bias.
Given the diverse nature of the free games on this compilation, we decided not to list them in order (but, rather, alphabetically), and hence not to crown a “best overall game”. Each of the games on this list is virtually guaranteed to entertain and is well worth checking out.

Steam, the PC’s fantastic answer to Xbox Live, is gaining more SEGA power in the near future. The service has been the host of Medieval II: Total War and Rome: Total War for a little while now – those titles will be available in ”Europe and most of the world”. SEGA and Valve today announced that a few new, or new to you, titles will be appearing on the digital distribution service.
SEGA Rally Revo and SEGA Rally are both available now, and Universe at War: Earth Assault is set to follow soon. Upcoming titles include next month’s movie tie-in The Golden Compass, which will feature a bastardized version of the book’s story. You know, just like the raped version being put up at your local megaplex. Also on the agenda are Worldwide Soccer Manager and Futbol Manager.

Speed boost or no, all of you clamoring for some hot Vista SP1 action will be able to get a beta-style fix in December, according to ZDNet. Apparently "selected testers" will get a release candidate in the first week of the month, with general availability to come the week after. ZDNet says the current SP1 build being tested is 17051, but it's not clear whether that's the version to be released or not. Like all things SP1, looks like we'll just have to wait and see.

No one at Blizzard ever expected World of Warcraft to become the phenomenon it has, according to Bill Roper.
"I remember a meeting at Blizzard where we were hoping we'd be able to sell a million copies of the game", Roper, former Blizzard North employee and now Flagship Studios CEO, has told CVG in an interview.
"You have to remember," Roper continued, "that the most successful American MMORPG at that time was EverQuest with about 500,000 players. It would have been impossible to predict that World of Warcraft would take off as a cultural phenomenon as it did, but those are the kind of surprises that you like to get in life."
World of Warcraft launched in late 2004/early 2005 (depending in which part of the world you lived), and has since gone on to charm over a ludicrously massive nine million players.
But Roper, who quit Blizzard in 2003, says he has no regrets that he wasn't around at the company when the game took off.
"As for regrets, I could never regret starting Flagship and Ping0 and building what we have here. The string of games I worked on at Blizzard makes me proud", he told us.
"And while World of Warcraft was perhaps the one that eclipsed them all, its success was also built upon the work we all did over the years on the reputation of Blizzard and Warcraft as a universe. I am glad that the game has done what it has because it is good for the industry as a whole."

Crytek has explained that its first patch for Crysis will be nothing major in an update on the progress of the first fix.
It's informed that the patch will address overall performance and multiplayer balancing ("adjustments to LAW and Grenade balance in multiplayer").
A release date for patch number one is yet to be nailed down.
"We are still working on it, but we are very confident that the patch will be out right after it has been verified and checked for stability. We will let you know immediately once we have more specific information on this for you", we're told.
Crytek's heavily hyped PC shooter finally released earlier this month.

Midway's Harvey Smith has admitted that relatively low review scores for Blacksite are "no surprise", admitting to various problems during development.
Speaking at the Montreal International Game Summit 2007, in comments caught by Wired, Smith pulled no punches: "This project was so ****ed up," he said.
Smith's said in the past that he wasn't all that enamoured with the Area 51 property when he first came onboard (there's more on tha tin our interview with him from June), but it sounds like a rush to completion became a bigger problem as development went on.
"It took eight months to get one thing working," he notes. "With a year to go, the game was disastrously off rails." It even "went straight from alpha to final". Eek. And there was virtually no time to spend play-testing the game.
Asked why he was being so honest about all this - and his belief that they "deserved" a critical hammering - Smith said: "I believe in personal accountability."
He also believes that the game's attempts at satire were either missed or ignored in some quarters, questioning how anyone could react to a particular element - detailed in the Wired report - without thinking "this is super ****ing subversive".
Blacksite is due out on PC and Xbox 360 tomorrow in Europe, with a PS3 release also on the way. Check back for our review soon.

PC manufacturer Alienware has joined forces with Intel to develop a web-based game called Hyperblast.
"...a scintillating, sci-fi themed web game.... Hyperblast lets players race and blast their way through a virtual, 3-D space track to win some stunning prizes", we're informed.
See the word 'prizes' there? Well, there's stuff up for grabs for elite Hyperblast-ians, including an Area-51 m9750 gaming notebook that would apparently set you back two grand.
"Hyperblast provides three different futuristic tracks on which players must race against tenacious AI drones", Alienware further explains. "Tactically the player may avoid enemy drones for an optimum lap time or use one of several power-ups available to destroy the opposition for bonus points."
Hyperblast requires Adobe Flash 9 and is compatible with all major web browsers.

Sony Online Entertainment has announced plans to set up a studio in India to develop online games with local content.
"We need to have Indian content for our games and we are looking for local partners," said David Christensen, vice president, business development and international operations, at a gaming conference in Mumbai.
The company is talking with local developers and aims to set up the studio early next year.
"We will contribute our technology to the joint venture," Christensen said. The local partner would be expected to provide the creative talent for the games and contribute towards the cost of setting up the studio.
There are currently about 2.8 million online gamers in India, but developers expect the market to explode as broadband penetration grows over the next few years.
SOE recently partnered with Virgin Comics to develop a multiplayer online game based on Ramayan 3329, a comic book written by self-help guru Deepak Chopra and filmmaker Shekhar Kapur that was inspired by a famous Indian epic about a battle against demons.
"If the game is successful in India, we will take it to Europe and North America," said Christensen. "It is a fresh international story and if it is created into a movie it could be a big global property."
The Ramayan comic was released in the United States last year, and Bangalore-based Virgin Comics is currently in talks on a movie version.

Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford has described Brothers in Arms competitor Medal of Honor as a franchise "in trouble".
"It's a great franchise, and a lot of people love it, but I think somebody really needs to get hold of that franchise who cares about the subject matter and understands what the real promise and the fantasy is", Pitchford told us when we caught up with him earlier today at a press event in London.
EA's Medal of Honor series blew gamers' socks off when Allied Assault launched on PC, but the series has never experienced the same accolade since.
"I think they're confused right now", Pitchford continued. "They're partially speaking not as a dedicated World War II game, but just as a game. I think if you're just going to make a shooter, there's other subject matter you can pick that give them more flexibility to do the kinds of things that they've been wishing to do.
"Like upgrading weapons and things like that? That doesn't belong in an authentic war game."
Development talent isn't the issue, he added, but what the Medal of Honor team really needs to do is focus on the fantasy.
"...there's something just missing about what's in the heart of what the fantasy is of playing these kinds of games and I think somebody needs to get hold of that franchise that really cares and can do that."

A beta version of the UT3 patch is out, and it's awesome for at least two reasons. 1) It fixes lots of complaints we and other UT fans had about the awkward and over-restrictive menu and server browser, and b) it's backwards compatible.
That would be a total no-brainer in any other area of software design, but it's so rare in game patches that I'm actually going to have to explain what it means. It means you can still play with people who don't have the patch. That curious sound is the collective jaws of Valve, DICE and Blizzard hitting the floor.
Though there are a few bug fixes and balance tweaks, the majority of the changes are direct responses to fan complaints about perceived consolification and, quite clearly, my review. Three of my complaints have been at least partially addressed: death messages now clearly state which weapon killed you, the scoreboard shows the ping for all players (provided the server's running the patch, duh) and the server browser is almost usable. Almost. You still can't browse all gametypes at once, which given that there are only about nine populated servers for each mode at the moment is rather irritating.
And our biggest complaint still stands: the bots are idiots at Warfare, the best game mode. Sure, you can't overhaul AI in a patch. But that's not necessary: all we need is a way to order the bots to leave the orb alone, and their incompetence would hardly matter. You can still get that extra 1% you need to break into the nineties, Epic. Come on, you can do it.
Still Epic have made me, and the rest of their community, rather chuffed. My favourite thing in the patch is sort of a niche pleasure, but you should try it nonetheless. Check 'record demo' when playing a match against bots, then load it up from the Community tab in the main menu. At the console (Tab), type "slomo 0.1" and then "showhud". You can now watch your heroics in bullet-time, and screenshot them from any angle in all their beautiful HUD-free glory.
In fact, you can use the reverse trick to make yourself look awesome: play a game with slomo set to 0.1, then play the demo back at full speed ("slomo 5"). You are now a pro gamer. Send this demo to Fatal1ty and he will wire you his gaming millions, crying.
