With Blizzard's Wrath of the Lich King NDA out of the way, there has been the inevitable flood of information about the new expansion hitting the streets. One of the most sought-after pieces of information is anything about the new class being introduced, the Death Knight. Massively has a great summary, with video examples, of the three different avenues available to the Death Knight. From the AE strengths of unholy, to the life-stealing blood tree, to the control of the frost tree, it seems that this new juggernaut is certainly going to be a force to be reckoned with.

New version of the SNES emulator for PC.
Info:
This release adds SPC7110 emulation, without the need for graphics packs!!, and a rewritten S-RTC (real-time clock) emulator.
SPC7110 support means that Far East of Eden Zero, FEoEZ: Shounen Jump Edition, Momotarou Dentetsu Happy and Super Power League 4 are now all fully playable. I will warn you, the emulation is very slow in this version -- while most areas of each game will run at the same speed as other games, there are a few peak moments where speed will drop by up to ~50%. The reason for the slow-down is that I am currently uncertain how to determine the amount of data to decompress in advance, so I default to the maximum amount possible. The reason I am releasing now anyway, is because I beleive in the "release early, release often" paradigm. It will likely take me a few weeks to finish researching this chip, and I didn't want to keep the work I had private during that time. But rest assured, bsnes v034 should feature much faster SPC7110 emulation.
neviksti, Andreas Naive and jolly_codger worked non-stop on the SPC7110 decompression algorithm for the past two weeks. caitsith2 provided valuable data to the effort. I only wish that I could've been of some use, but alas, I had no role in this. In the end, it was neviksti who managed to crack all three(!!) compression modes of this chip, which turned out to be a customized 8-bit QM-coder with a prediction model. You can read more about this here. I would also like to thank Dark Force and John Weidman (aka The Dumper) for their research notes on the SPC7110 register interface.
For those who don't understand the hoopla about figuring out this compression algorithm when we already had graphics pack simulation, I should note that we have since found a few errors in these packs. Not to mention, you no longer need ~4-16MB packs for each game you wish to run. They work like any other game now. Better still, the chip can now be used to compress new graphics, eg for any future translation efforts on these titles.
The real-time clocks in both Far East of Eden Zero and Dai Kaijuu Monogatari 2 will now save a ".rtc" file in your save folder, which contains the clock as set by the video game, as well as a timestamp from your computer when the time was last updated. It uses the difference between the saved timestamp and current time to update the time. This allows you to specify any time you like, whereas previously bsnes would just use your computer's current time, ignoring the time you set in-game. It also allows the "round clock by 30 seconds" option in both games to work. I avoided this before because this method makes supporting daylight savings time and such impractical, although I should note that the original hardware did not support DST, either. This method was required to pass the SPC7110 tests, and is overall much more faithful to how the original chips worked.
Once again, I'd really like to personally thank neviksti for his tireless efforts. Eliminating graphics packs from SNES emulation was one of my primary reasons for getting involved in the SNES emulation scene. That neviksti managed to crack this algorithm means a lot to me. Thank you so much, neviksti. This release is dedicated to you, now go get some sleep

Buying a PC can come along with some unwanted preinstalls. And now with Microsoft mandating that third party hardware manufacturers bundle Vista (not XP), that unwanted preinstall can include an entire OS. Given that a portion of any commercial PC's purchase price includes funds allotted to software, XP users may find themselves forced into buying Vista even though they won't be using it.
That is, unless they do like one user and use a simple exploit. Just don't accept the software's end-user license agreement (EULA).
Most of us click that "I agree" box without ever thinking twice. But what if you don't agree with those terms and conditions? It gives you perfect fodder for going back to the computer manufacturer and demanding a refund on the software. After all, the EULA itself says to "contact the manufacturer or installer to determine their return policy for a refund or credit" if you don't agree with its policy.
One guy used this technique to score a fat $200 check from HP before installing Linux onto his system. For those of you interested in pursuing a refund on your next computer, hit the link for his whole detailed story to duplicate the system.

Doom64 EX is a free clone of the Nintendo64 game, Doom64 (developed by Midway).
The goal is to perfectly re-create Doom64 in every way possible and to support Win32 and *Unix platforms.
The Doom64 EX engine is based on the Doom3D source port.
I am quite happy to announce the first public release of Doom64 EX. I wanted to make sure everything is in a stable state before I make a public release, however this release is not official.
I am seeking feedback for what everyone likes, what they don't like, and what they like to see improved or enhanced. Though do not expect massive/overhaul changes or updates. Keep the feature suggestions realistic. I am also seeking those to point out any serious bugs as well.
Please take the time to review the readme on how to setup D64Ex and for its known issues.
---------------------------------------------
System Requirements
---------------------------------------------
- Windows 9x/2000/XP/Vista
- DirectX 6.0 or higher
- 64mb ram (128mb recommended)
- 1.2ghz Processor or higher (800mhz without music)
- 128mb Graphics Card or higher
- Doom64 N64 ROM (U) or (E) versions only.

Edit: Now at version 1.1a which fixes two major flaws (Hectic crash, and a typo in the Mancubus attack pointer where it fails to invalidate a target).
Edit again: Now at version 1.1b. Please review CHANGES.TXT for all the updates and fixes since 1.1a. This version I would concider stable, but please keep on reporting bugs and other issues that may arise.
Enjoy

A major bit of World of Warcraft news passed us by in all the E3 hubbub last week: Blizzard confirmed that next expansion Wrath of the Lich King will introduce an achievement system to the game.
The move was strongly rumoured following a leak from the alpha test last month. Blizzard spilled the beans on WOW's official website last week.
There will be more than 500 achievements at Lich King's launch relating to every aspect of WOW, "including world exploration, PvE, PvP, professions, and character development". Some will come with cosmetic in-game rewards - tabards, vanity pets and titles are all mentioned.
The achievements window will be accessed via a new button on the action bar. As with the Xbox 360 equivalent, achievements each have a points value that adds up to a total score. Some even come with progress bars and quest-style completion objectives, and can be tracked on the main screen.
You can compare your achievements with other players' just by clicking on them, again like Xbox Live. Unlocked achievements are announced with animation and sound to anyone in the vicinity, as well as on your guild channel.
Achievements are very much in vogue with MMOs right now. WOW's current competitor Lord of the Rings Online, and near-future contender Warhammer Online, both feature achievement-style systems, while Age of Conan also has one in development.
It might not be entirely original, but WOW's achievement system sounds very well-sorted to us. Check out the official page for more detail and some examples.
Meanwhile, in other WOW news, Blizzard announced that the game would launch in Latin America for the first time at the end of this week, on July 25th. Mexico, Chile and Argentina are the first countries to get localised versions of the game, and dedicated Spanish-language support teams. The Spanish-language support pack will also be available across North America.
WOW will also release in Russian later this year. We'd bet that a Portuguese version for Brazil is next on the list after that, as WOW's world domination continues.

Following last week's announcement that Flagship Studios had made all staff redundant and closed down development, the beta test of its anticipated free MMO Mythos has gone offline.
The game's servers shut down late on Friday. Although it's officially only a "hiatus", the situation at the developer makes Mythos' future look very uncertain. There are reports that it will be picked up by Korea's HanbitSoft, which will develop it internally.
"Despite this bump in the road, I think we've succeeded wildly," said executive producer Max Shaefer in a post on the game's forums, just before they too were taken offline. "This is undoubtedly the best game community I've ever seen."
At the moment it's unknown what form Mythos will take if it ever re-emerges.
The future of Flagship's other game, Hellgate: London, also hangs in the balance. Flagship is no longer taking new subscribers for it, or billing existing ones, but the servers are still live at time of writing.

BioWare has put out a new trailer for its PC focused fantasy role-playing game, Dragon Age: Origins. You can see it to the right.
Whilst the cinematic trailer released last week was different to what we were expecting, this new video fulfils all of our expectations.
In fact, it's like watching someone play Baldur's Gate with the resolution maxed up. And the animations improved. And in 3D.
Some of the effects need more work (particularly the blood splatters) and the combat isn't likely to capture the interest of those not already into RPGs, but overall it looks like the sort of game BioWare used to make in the nineties. We're not complaining.

Not sure what to make of this. Bullshit radar says "proof of nothing" because there's no reason for tech support to be looped in on a game in development. That said, two guys worked up an extremely patient, social engineering prank that had 2K Games support believing, or at least suspicious of the possibility of a hacked Grand Theft Auto IV demo on pirate sites. And in the back-and-forth, it turned up this reply from tech support:
"The PC version of GTA IV has not even been announced for release and is still in development so is not about to be released on a website."

Microsoft's been touting its "fastest annual revenue growth since 1999," which resulted in a princely $60.42 billion dollars in its last fiscal year, but the number that has us rapt? Vista licenses sold since launch about 18 months ago: 180m. Damn, not too shabby a clip -- especially considering that they moved 20m licenses moved in month one, 40m licenses moved after the first 100 days, and 140m licenses by last April. But at roughly 10m licenses per month, that means Vista's still a couple years out before it surpasses XP, and with a bit of luck, by then we'll have already moved on to Windows 7.

John Riccitiello, the CEO of Electronic Arts, has said that he was interested in owning World of Warcraft, which now falls under the Activision Blizzard umbrella. He said that he discussed the matter, but that it wasn't on the cards.
This comes from an article on business website, Portfolio. In a baffling piece of reporting, Portfolio then goes on to say the reason this wasn't on the cards was (in Riccitiello's words), "Because [Vivendi] couldn't afford control of EA, and I wasn't giving it up."
We've run this through our corporate translator and this looks to SPOnG like a defensive posture from Riccitiello relating to the recent Activision Blizzard merger. Riccitiello states:
1) Vivendi couldn't afford EA (quite how he could know that SPOnG's not sure) but it could afford Activision.
2) Riccitiello (personally) wouldn't give up control of the company, even if Vivendi could afford it.
This comes just over a week after the completion of the Activision Blizzard merger, in which Vivendi took a 52% controlling share in Activision.
Interestingly, Riccitiello just let slip that a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic MMO is, in fact, in development. See SPOnG's report here.

THQ has released an in-game video and some screenshots for its sequel to Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War.
For the first time in our (admittedly rubbish) memory, a 40K game actually looks like the universe we remember from our childhood years.
The Space Marine Dreadnaught looks particularly impressive and is remarkably accurate to the miniature it's based upon.
The in-game footage looks good, too. And in case you missed it, have a look at the cinematic trailer that we posted yesterday. It's worth a watch.

Twelve new screens and a brand new trailer for Warhammer: Battle March have hit the internet, revealing in-engine action from the 360 version.
Battle March is an expansion pack to Mark of Chaos on the PC, but will be a stand alone game when it arrives on Xbox in November this year.
The original title received mixed reviews when it was released, although our friends on PC Zone awarded it 82% and said it was "a great - if shortfall-shrewn - RTS triumph."
