Heres a New Windows XNA project:
Terrain Explorer is a terrain renderer built using XNA 2.0. It uses a custom version of Chunked LOD to dynamically manage the resolution of the terrain based on the viewer's position and the complexity of the geometry. It minimizes the amount of geometry stored in memory by creating a single small grid and dynamically displacing it in a vertex shader to draw each terrain chunk using vertex texture fetches. The terrain is also dynamically normal mapped.
Finally, it has a rudimentary grass renderer in place that will render grass if the camera is in close enough proximity.
In future versions, real-time water and some sort of sky (ideally atmospheric scattering) will be included.
I've included the full source to the project and all the project files in the belief that I should give a little back to a community from which I've learned a lot.

We already knew Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning was pretty much done, but now the Electronic Arts website has updated with a release date. The day of reckoning? September 23. There's been no official press release from EA or developer Mythic, so someone has either jumped the gun on updating the site or this won't be the official launch.

If you happen to peruse the recent Game Career guide e-newsletter (PDF file; via WarCry), you'll notice on page 43 an advertisement that Cryptic Studios is hiring. While it may not seem like much, the ad does reveal a rather juicy detail that the developer is working on Star Trek Online.
In January 2008, work on the Star Trek MMO switched from Perpetual Entertainment to an undisclosed California-based developer. It looks like they're sticking with the Star Trek Online name; we were so hoping to see City of Trekkies instead.

According to GameDaily, EA today released a free download of a Spore prototype known as 'BIOME.' The download site describes BIOME as a program that 'uses a language based on chemical stoichiometry.' It goes on to note that 'cells in a BIOME simulation change state the same way that chemicals change when exposed to other chemicals. Systems such as this can be used to simulate phenomena such as forest fires, disease epidemics, animal migration patterns and crystallization.' Note that the link provided in the linked article is, in fact, incorrect. Here is the right here. Apparently, many more prototypes giving insight into the dev process of one of the PC world's most-hyped games will be posted in the future, so keep an eye on it.

New version of the rom manager for PC.
Change log:
* New "FRI User Settings.xml" file for storing user settings
* Change: the last search is not stored in the new user settings file
* New feature: the user can now rearrange the columns in the main FRI window
* New feature: the selected columns and sorting are now saved when FRI is closed, and reloaded when FRI is opened.
* Fix: When a Library Folder is removed, the associated ROMs will once again be removed. (This was not the case in the previous version of FRI)
* Fix: ROMs with very long file names no longer crash FRI when FRI is scanning for ROMs. Now in many cases the ROMs will be added anyway, and in other cases FRI will simply skip that ROM, informing the user of the error by adding a dummy ROM to the list with "!!! error when finding roms: <message>" as the name, where <message> is the error message.

Don't look now, but there's a new game at #1. And it wasn't made by Maxis. And it wasn't made by Blizzard. That's right, the top-selling PC game (at a bricks n mortar retailer) in the US for the week ending July 12 was...Nancy Drew: The Phantom of Venice. A popular series, no doubt, but really. Nancy Drew?
1. Nancy Drew: The Phantom Of Venice
2. Spore Creature Creator
3. The Sims 2 Double Deluxe
4. Diablo Battle Chest
5. The Sims 2 IKEA Home Stuff
6. WoW: Battle Chest
7. World Of Warcraft
8. The Sims 2 Freetime
9. WoW: The Burning Crusade
10. Call of Duty 4

Could have sworn this was discounted when it first popped up a few weeks back, but it's popped back up again today, so what the hell. You may see, or may already have seen, images of the cover of the latest issue of PC Gamer Malaysia. Purporting to confirm that GTA IV is on its way to the PC. Well it's not, at least, it's not yet, with the magazine's editor admitting the cover's headline is his own conjecture. Rockstar have also chimed in, denying any announcement on a PC version has been made.

Let's face it: you don't have nearly enough game controllers and accessories adding to the spaghetti that is your entertainment center. This USB M.A.D. Game Pad gives you the option to remove a little steering wheel for those moments when you're not driving about. Compatible with Windows Vista, XP, and 2000, this Brando product is available for $20. So, why? Apparently this thing is meant for the gamer on the move -- it's small and light, measuring only 4 x 2.5-inches and weighing in at a dainty 3-ounces. As for the size of the steering wheel? It's tiny. Really tiny. For tiny people with tiny fingers. Can you feel the love?

Telltale Games is working on an episodic video game based on Wallace and Gromit.
Subtitled "Grand Adventures," the game will allow players to take control of the duo.
Telltale Games CEO Dan Connors has said the game will feature more physical and situation-based comedy ala the film series, rather than creating a simple platform game set in the Wallace and Gromit world.
"The other games captured the personality, but all you ended up doing was running through the world," said Connors to the Associated Press.
"We feel like the gameplay should be more of an experience. You should be able to interact with the other characters and really feel like you're in the world of 'Wallace & Gromit.'"

Blizzard has released five new shots from Diablo III, including two screen grabs, a still from a cut scene and a couple of pieces of artwork.
We think we've seen the shot from cut scene in the cinematic trailer and the screen shots unfortunately are similar to what we've seen before. They look great, though.
More interesting is the artwork, especially the "Mistress of Pain" drawing depicting some sort of spider demon creature.
The annotations are particularly revealing. If they are to be believed, it seems the creatures can shoot explosive projectiles out of their arses and excrete sticky silk from... well, see for yourself.

You knew it was coming. Grand Theft Auto IV is on its way to PC, if the current cover of Malaysia's PC Gamer is anything to be believed.
While the game hasn't yet been confirmed by Rockstar, the latest issue of Malaysia's "premier PC gaming mag" (their words, not ours) features Nico on its front with the cover line, "Now on console, soon on PC."
No other details are revealed and we haven't got our hands on the magazine yet (our subscription copy must have got lost in the post), so we can't confirm if it's indeed a first-look or a collection of internet rumours put in print.
We think it would be a bit cheeky if it was the later, but until we hear from Rockstar we can't be quite sure. We're checking with them now.

WIP news of the PlayStation emulator for PC.
Yes, the emu is alive and well, though I have not had much time to mess with it (been very busy)
I have asked a bunch of friends to help me get a website together, and get it out there. A few people have pinged me online and I have even sent a few the code to see if they can get it running AOK, but most haven't checked back.
It works great... Vista & Java don't play well together with DirectX which slows a few things down, so I want to throw together a Java3D or JOGL display which does the 2d VRAM -> screen blit. This may speed up OS-X which used to be slow too, but I haven't checked in a while.
P.S. I really want people to work on this, so I want it out there (I don't even really care about cleaning up some of the uglier code now), I just haven't had much inclination to work on software outside of work :-(
P.P.S. I talked to a buddy about making the website happen, so hopefully things are in moition

via Eurogamer
World of Warcraft lead designer Jeff Kaplan has confirmed in a forum post that Blizzard is "planning on speeding up levelling in the 60-70 range" in next expansion Wrath of the Lich King.
The 60-70 range encompasses all the high-level content from the current expansion, The Burning Crusade. Players levelling Death Knight hero characters in the Lich King beta test had noticed they were making faster progression in Burning Crusade's Outland.
Kaplan, posting under his famous alias Tigole, said that the team was "still adjusting" the change, and sought feedback from players.
Late last year, the Gods of Zul'Aman patch increased the levelling speed in the original game from levels 20-60, to hasten players on their way to Outland. It now seems that Blizzard intends to do the same for the road to new continent Northrend.
In other WOW news, Eurogamer MMO finally managed to log on to the Lich King beta last night, and we stayed up past our bedtime playing it. We'll bring you our impressions soon.
