New version of the front end for Unix.
Changelog:
The third release of the 0.2 series of QMC2 is out now. It's lined up with SDLMAME 0.126 which has also been released recently.
We have a lot of changes this time, many bug-fixes and improvements, and quite a few new and important features. Here's a summary of the major changes:
- Direct GUI control via digital and analog joysticks through SDL
- Optional use of OpenGL to draw images (previews & flyers) - actually, this was mainly an experiment and is not necessarily faster than the default drawing mechanism smile.gif
- Support for MAME's history.dat & mameinfo.dat information databases (this will be changed to a more generic approach in the future to support additional information sources)
- Fullscreen toggle for the main widget
- Style handling improved to allow for on-the-fly switching to the system's default GUI style
- Improved window flags to better handle individual windows
- Architecture-independant OS detection for distribution specific build rules
- Several widget restoration bugs were discovered and fixed, together with a number of other/older bugs...

New PC Homebrew game released:
Double Dragon Deluxe is a multi player game written in C# .NET using Direct Draw. A player may join either as a "Hero" or a "Computer Controller Player". The game will randomly assign control of enemy avatars to computer controller players. This makes the game quite difficult and interesting for the "Hero" players.
Game characters can also wield weapons of different types: sword, baseball bat, mace, metal pipe ...
Heroes gain Experience for successful attacks. A hero can use this experience to upgrade attack moves. For example, upgrading the punch attack will increase the speed of punching, add stun effects to the punch move and more damage. Upgraded attack moves have added visual effects.
The game engine supports area sounds and area weather effects. If a player gets closer to an area marked with these effects, the effects will increase. Such as, rain will start pouring harder, or sound becomes louder.

Shiny mastermind David Perry says free PC game releases will help stamp out PC game piracy in the US and Europe.
In case you've forgotten him already, Perry founded Shiny Entertainment in 1993, which is best known for gaming classics Earthworm Jim, MDK, Messiah and erm, Enter The Matrix. He left the company in 2006.
"The next big thing will be free games," said Perry, speaking in Belfast after being awarded an honorary doctorate by Queen's University.
"[Asia] had so much piracy that they decided to stop charging for the games. Instead, there'll be a charge for things you might want to use in the game," he continued.
"Your character might have a plain white T-shirt. If you wanted a nicer one you could have it for a dollar. Or perhaps you could buy a magic sword for a knight for a dollar."
Perry's idea is already in the beginning stages of appearing in the West; EA's Battlefield Heroes is set to release as a totally free download, and id is currently beta testing Quake Live, which is fully funded by in-game advertising.
"It's going to turn our industry on its head," he said. "I want to see the same thing happening in the USA and Europe."
Perry is currently working on ambitious, community-created MMO Top Secret with Acclaim.

via Eurogamer
Id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead has defended Doom III's reputation, pointing out that the four-year-old first-person shooter is "the most successful game in id's history".
Asked by Kikizo whether there were any 'weaknesses in Doom III that need to be corrected' for upcoming multiformat racing/shooting hybrid Rage, Hollenshead rejected the premise completely.
"I think there are three people on the internet that keep making these posts that Doom 3 was 'bad', and they get no credibility from any other people... there's some mass-misperception out there," he said.
"I get this occasionally - why don't I think Doom III was successful? We sold over three million units! It's the most successful game in id's history."
Released in August 2004 on PC (and later on Xbox), Doom III took players on a spooky tour of a dark and distorted Mars research base where naughty experiments had opened a gateway to Hell.
The game was highly rated at the time, even collecting a 9/10 rating from our own Kristan Reed, but it did come under fire for its repetitive environments, single-minded focus and the fact you couldn't hold the torch at the same time as your gun.
Doom's developer is currently working on various projects including a fourth game in the series based on id's current engine, id Tech 5.

A new trailer for S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Sky has cropped up online, showing off the darker atmosphere and the detailed environments representing Chernobyl.
One of the major assets of the original title was its atmosphere and from the looks of the trailer the prequel has it in spades.
Not only does it come through in the in-engine footage, but also in the inspirations for the objects and locations in the game. Based on the photographs shown, they've recreated the nuclear disaster area remarkably well.
The original S.T.A.L.K.E.R went through a lot of iterations over its development, losing numerous features along the way. According to PC Gamer's most recent preview, the prequel could well be the game the company originally intended to make.
If for nothing else, that's worth keeping an eye on for.

BioWare is preparing to reveal more about its ambitious role-playing game Dragon Age on Wednesday.
Or at least that's what the official website would have us believe, as it was updated recently to read "More July 9, 2008" underneath what is presumably a silhouette of the logo.
Plenty of speculation about the nature of the announcement has followed on the Dragon Age forums.
All we've heard in any official capacity about the project so far is EA saying it will be out before April 2009, and BioWare talking about it as a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate and "the RPG people have been waiting for".

New update of the Commodore Plus/4 emulator for PC.
Changelog:
* added support for using the mouse to change the cursor position in the emulated machine, and copying text to and pasting from the clipboard; the following functions are available:
- left click: sets the cursor position
- right click: sets the cursor position, and copies the selected word to the clipboard
- ctrl + right click: sets the cursor position, and copies text from the selected line to the clipboard
- shift + right click: copies text from the whole screen to the clipboard without changing the cursor position
- middle click: sets the cursor position, and pastes text from the clipboard
- shift + middle click: pastes text from the clipboard without changing the cursor position
Note that these are disabled when a display mode that hides the menu bar and the mouse cursor is selected, or light pen emulation - which also uses the mouse - is enabled.
* new command line option (-keybuf) for typing text of any length at startup; the text can also be read from a file
* added machine configuration option to control the SID output volume; this also affects the sound recorded to AVI files
* increased TED audio output level relative to the default SID output level, for better accuracy in programs that use both types of sound at the same time
* minor sound emulation fixes
* the process priority of the emulator can be changed from the GUI (currently, this is only implemented on Windows)
* some utility improvements: 'compress' has more options now, and is optimized somewhat for slightly better efficiency and speed; 'p4fliconv' automatically detects the use of the C64 palette in GIF files and enables pixel exact reading mode, and there is a new experimental hires conversion algorithm as well
* minor optimizations
* in OpenGL video mode, the vertical interlace effect is now also displayed at quality 1 and 2, and quality 2 uses 32-bit textures for improved color accuracy at the expense of being somewhat slower (previously, both interlace and 32-bit textures were enabled only at quality 3)
* fixed bug that prevented the emulator display from being correctly redrawn when damaged on Windows in software video mode or OpenGL with the quality set to 0
* a few Linux compile and link errors have been fixed

New version of the MSX emulator for PC.
Changelog:
Important: RuMSX v0.41 has a new installer! Therefore it is required to uninstall an older version of RuMSX before installing the new version. You can uninstall RuMSX through the Control-Panel. Select "Software" and "RuMSX" to uninstall.
- Installer now supports the Windows XP "Open With" feature. This is different to prior versions, where only "RuMSX" and "Disk-Manager" could share the file-extensions. Now potential problems on Windows XP and existing problems on Windows Vista are resolved in changing this behavior.
- Windows 95 / Windows NT 4 is no longer supported, new minimum requirement is Windows 98 / Windows 2000 and Internet Explorer 4
- Disk drive letters have been assigned incorrectly for rare configurations (e.g. HB-F1XDJ) where the Disk-ROM was located in an expanded slot with secondary slot-id different than 3. E.g. FILES accessed drive "C:" instead of "A:" (this bug was new since RuMSX v0.31)
- Added "CAS" motor indicator (in addition to FDD, HDD, CD)
- Added "Preview" support for .RuMSX save-state files
- Some interlaced modes were not rendered correctly
- Fully implemented scanline interrupt handling "F1 Spirit 3D special", "Golvelious 2", "Bombaman" and many more games are working now!
- Fixed incomplete detection of 5th/9th sprite, so WAVES.ROM does also work now!
- Fixed behavior of VDP TransferReady flag, so "Andorogynus" does no longer have defective graphics
- Fixed Printer-emulation: subscript is now correct, printing with resolutions > 300dpi is better sized
- Added display of print-progress to statusbar (at least for emulated MSX/Epson printers)
- Fixed problems when RuMSX is started for the 1st time (MSX2: logo rendered incorrectly, ...)
- Default-directory for print-file and debug-output file is no longer %TEMP%, "%TMP% or C:\ but "My MSX" or "My Documents"
- Fixed autodetection of "64 in 1" ROM, which was unfortunately ignored in the ROM-database.
- Corrected floppy-emulation to MSX Disk-BIOS semantic (all memory-aras except page 1 are unchanged during PHYDIO)
- Keyboard click is now shorter (better match to real MSX)
- Options "Use OPLL" and "Use multimedia timer" are now selected by default
- Removed several hardcoded english texts (startup, shutdown, disk properties, ...)
- Added option to remember last used Joystick
- Many fixes to the configuration editor:
-- Configurations with an "Unknown" locale were not correctly saved in prior versions;
-- Configuration is handled readonly if no change-permissions are given (Vista/XP/2000/NT4);
-- Readonly-configurations are displayed with disabled controls;
-- New configurations will be saved into "My MSX\MSX computers\RuMSX configurations" (if available);
-- New configurations are automatically added to the list and selected by default
- No "Choose configuration" (initial) in case of read SaveState or Preview
- Supplemental SETUP.EXE is now fully supporting Windows Vista
- A lot of internal changes for WIN64 compatibility
- Added italian localization (translation incomplete in this release)
- Added support for "Playball" samples. If available they should be provided as samples\playball\playball_*.wav files in the RuMSX folder.
- Warning for overriding sensitive data applies to Win95/98/ME only (volume tracking driver) and is therefore displayed on such systems only!
- Moved documentation of R800 extensions from the WebPage into the manuals, where it should be persisted.
- Added SPLITROM.exe command-line utility
- Added disclaimer as requested by BAZIX - MSX logo policy
- BugFix: number of CPU cycles per screen-refresh was reversed for 50Hz and 60Hz (noticable with NEMESIS1)
- Known bug: Interrupt timed games such as "Nemesis1" might accidentally speed up for some duration. Workaround: see "Known Problems" in RuMSX-help.
