MESS v0.201 is released. MESS(Multi Emulator Super System) is an open source emulator which emulates a large variety of different systems. MESS is a source-available project which documents the hardware for a wide variety of (mostly vintage) computers, video game consoles, and calculators through software emulation, as MAME does for arcade games. As a nice side effect to this documentation, MESS allows software and games for these hardware platforms to be run on modern PCs.
Please note that MESSUI is no longer provided here. Use MAMEUI and make these changes:
* copy mess.ini to mame.ini
* copy ini\mess.ini to ini\mame.ini
* copy MESS_g.ini to MAME_g.ini
* copy messui.ini to mameui.ini
* Start MAMEUI, click on View, Custom Filters, tick Arcade, click OK. Now it will be the same as MESSUI was.

Fortnite has skipped the Google Play store for its Android release, but its avoidance of the securities offered by Google Play potentially allowed for a major exploit to make its way into the launcher. On Friday, Google publicly disclosed a bug in the Fortnite launcher that potentially allowed for hackers to install malware onto Android devices.
The exploit, which has since been fixed with version 2.1.0 of the app, was essentially a weakness in the installer app for Fortnite that allowed for other programs already-downloaded onto the device to go through the launcher and install other programs without the knowledge of the user. For the vulnerability to cause a problem, the user would already have to have an app on their phone looking for said vulnerability, but if they did, malware could be installed and launched through the Fortnite app while the user assumed they were installing and launching Fortnite itself.
While the issue was fixed shortly after Google made the information public, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney responded in a comment made to Android Central regarding the company's publication of the issue:
"Epic genuinely appreciated Google's effort to perform an in-depth security audit of Fortnite immediately following our release on Android, and share the results with Epic so we could speedily issue an update to fix the flaw they discovered.
"However, it was irresponsible of Google to publicly disclose the technical details of the flaw so quickly, while many installations had not yet been updated and were still vulnerable.
"An Epic security engineer, at my urging, requested Google delay public disclosure for the typical 90 days to allow time for the update to be more widely installed. Google refused. You can read it all at https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/112630336

World of Warcraft's latest expansion, Battle for Azeroth, has just over a week under its Azerite belt after what seems to have been a successful launch. In fact, Blizzard is reporting it as the fastest-selling expansion ever released.
Battle for Azeroth's launch last week sold over 3.4 million day-one copies globally. Blizzard points out that it makes it one of the fastest-selling PC games to date, though it doesn't quite reach the heights of the company's other PC monster, Diablo III, which sold 3.5 million day-one copies in 2012.

WineD3D v3.14 is relesaed. WineD3D For Windows is a DirectX 1-11 to OpenGL wrapper based on WineD3D, which is an almost full implementation of DirectX used in Wine. Even if Windows supports DirectX natively, using WineD3D can enhance backwards compatiblity with older games, especially on Windows 8 and newer that don't support 16 bit screen modes. Another possible use is to emulate unsupported versions of DirectX, or porting DirectX applications to OpenGL without having to rewrite the rendering code.

Linux users are now able to play more Steam games that were previously only playable on Windows.
Valve has detailed the latest update for Steam Play, its system that enables users of the marketplace to access their purchases across Windows, Mac and Linux. While more than 3,000 titles do have official Linux support, the firm is keen to expand this to more of its inventory.
The new Steam Play update has been released in beta and includes a compatibility tool called Proton, which enables Windows-only games to run on Linux. The tool itself is based on a similar product called Wine and is fully open source, available via GitHub.
DirectX 11 and 12 are now handled by the Vulkan API, and Proton also automatically recognises all Steam-supported controllers.
For developers, Valve advises that if they are already working on Linux support or use a compatible engine, they should just carry on as planned. If a studio was not planning to release on Linux, making their game work natively with Vulkan should open the option for it to work via the new Steam Play update.

Last Friday, we discussed reports of Steam having secretly made some updates regarding Steam Play, and hints that it could be linked to allowing for those on Linux to run Windows-only games. As of August 21st, Steam has put out a press release announcing the new beta. Multiple games that don't have an official Linux release can now easily be installed from the Steam client, allowing for easy access to the compatible games, listed below.
Games that originally relied on DirectX will now run through Vulkan, instead. These titles function by running a modified version of WINE, which Valve has dubbed "Proton". For those interested, you can see it on GitHub, where the code has been made open source.

A few weeks old but heres the latest news from the ScummVM Team:
We are very happy to announce that our friends at Cyan, Inc. released their 25th Anniversary Collection of the Myst series today as digital download on GOG.com.
Myst — Masterpiece Edition and Riven — The Sequel to Myst are powered by ScummVM, while Myst III — Exile is driven by ResidualVM.
In the last couple of weeks, both the Cyan and the ScummVM teams have made great strides to improve game compatibility. Due to intense testing, we have already managed to fix most issues that were present in ScummVM and ResidualVM. However, due to the nature of software development, it's still possible that we missed something, so we need your help now.
While we can fix issues in the GOG.com versions of the games at a later date with a simple update, this won't be possible for the upcoming Collector's Edition on DVDs, so we need to make sure that we have fleshed out any bugs before the DVDs are manufactured.
So, please grab a copy from GOG.com or if you were a backer in the Kickstarter campaign, redeem your code. Visit Myst Island, roam through Age 233, have a nice stay in Releeshahn and report any issue you can find to our Bug Tracker.
And please... bring me the blue pages!

The Vive is finally ready to cut the cord. HTC today announced that the Vive Wireless Adapter will launch around the world September 24.
In the US, the device will retail for $299 and works with both the original Vive and the Vive Pro headsets. However, Vive Pro users will need a $60 compatibility pack that includes an attachment device, connection cable, and foam padding specific to the headset. Users will also need to install a PCI-e card and hook up a sensor to their PCs.
Preorders for the Vive will open up September 5. In the US, customers will be able to preorder the device through Amazon, Best Buy, Microsoft, NewEgg, or straight through Vive.com.
This wireless adapter is different from the TPCAST-produced peripheral that was originally announced in late 2016, with a price point that worked out to about $220 US.

Today, Valve quietly launched a new livestreaming service called Steam.tv. The site went live earlier today, though at the time of this writing was inaccessible.
Steam.tv looks to be primarily a livestreaming platform, though at launch is only showing Dota 2's The International. Though GamesIndustry.biz was unable to access the site consistently enough to test its features, CNET reports that the interface includes Steam Chat functionality with tabbed chat windows and the ability to invite friends to watch videos together. Google Chrome currently supports in-browser voice chat as well.
Before this, Steam users were already able to stream their gameplay through the normal Steam application, but it was only accessible through the app to those already connected to the user. Steam.tv appears to be more along the lines of a streaming site competitive with Twitch or YouTube Gaming.
