QEMU v3.1.0-rc2 is released. QEMU is a generic and open source machine emulator and virtualizer. When used as a machine emulator, QEMU can run OSes and programs made for one machine (e.g. an ARM board) on a different machine (e.g. your own PC). By using dynamic translation, it achieves very good performances. When used as a virtualizer, QEMU achieves near native performances by executing the guest code directly on the host CPU. A host driver called the QEMU accelerator (also known as KQEMU) is needed in this case. The virtualizer mode requires that both the host and guest machine use x86 compatible processors.

WinUAE v4.1.0 Beta 11 is released. WinUAE is the commodore amiga emulator for Windows. WinUAE is a mostly complete software emulation of the hardware of the Commodore Amiga 500/1000/2000. A Commodore Amiga, for those who don’t know, is a 16/32 bit computer system based on the Motorola 680×0 CPU and a few specially designed custom chips that provide very good graphics and sound capabilities. Its first incarnation, the A1000, appeared in 1985, followed by the highly successful A500 and A2000 models. WinUAE is a port of the originally written for Unixish systems UAE; but over time, it seems the Windows port, WinUAE has become the best version available on any platform. WinUAE is free software: you are welcome to distribute copies of it and/or modify it, under certain conditions. There is no warranty of any kind for UAE. For more details concerning these issues, please read the GNU General Public License, which describes the terms under which WinUAE is distributed.

Total War is beating a hasty retreat from the free-to-play fray.
In a message to Total War: Arena players today, Creative Assembly's Joshua Williams said the decision has been made to pull the plug on the project in February, just a year after the open beta period began.
"We have learned so much during the development of Arena and we have grown incredibly close with the community and involved you deeply into our development process," Williams said. "It has been an absolute privilege to work with you all on this project, but unfortunately the results of Arena Open Beta Test did not meet all our expectations."

Today, EA has announced it will partner with Petroglyph Games to remaster Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn, Command & Conquer: Red Alert, and three classic expansion packs: Covert Ops, Counterstrike, and Aftermath.
In a Reddit post from EA producer Jim Vessella, he said that Red Alert and its three expansions would be bundled as one remastered collection, though the team has not yet begun development on either Tiberian Dawn or Red Alert yet. He also said the games would not include any microtransactions - a particular sticking point for fans at the announcement of upcoming free-to-play mobile release Command & Conquer Rivals.

"Fortnite shows no signs of slowing" continues to be a tried, if tired, and true introduction to news pieces on the game, and today is no exception. Epic Games has revealed that the game has reached 8.3 million concurrent worldwide users in conjunction with its release in South Korea this past week.
This information was provided by a spokesperson in an interview with South Korean publication Inven, and then was verified by VG247. The last such number communicated by Epic was 3.4 million concurrent players in February.
In September, the game reached a record 78.3 million unique players for the entire month.
In a Twitter post from Steam analytics site Steam Spy, it was noted that in comparison, Steam sees around 5 million peak players across all its games at once, and 16 million peak users with the client running.

To celebrate an entire year on PC, Bungie and Activision, in collaboration with Blizzard Entertainment, announce that from November 2nd to November 18th everyone on Blizzard’s Battle.net gaming platform who has not already purchased Destiny 2—or any new members joining Battle.net—will have the opportunity to claim the game as a free gift.
Destiny 2 will be available on the Battle.net app to claim for free for a little more than two weeks in November, and players will have the opportunity to download the game once they’ve claimed it*. New Battle.net accounts created after 19:00 BST on November 2, 2018, will be required to enable Blizzard SMS Protect before claiming their game license. Destiny 2 is redeemable from https://account.blizzard.com/gifts/.
Existing players of Destiny 2 PC will receive an exclusive emblem not available anywhere else, which becomes available in December, to commemorate the first anniversary of being on Battle.net. Additionally, new Guardians will have the opportunity to try out Destiny 2: Forsaken’s new mode “Gambit,” from November 9th through 11th 2018, during the Gambit Free Weekend. Gambit is a 4v4 hybrid activity included with Destiny 2: Forsaken. More details are available at http://www.destinythegame.com/Battlenet/.
“We know Destiny players that want to play on PC expect an amazing experience, whether it’s on their own or with their friends -- so, our paramount concern was to keep the discerning requirements of the PC community in mind, and welcoming the Battle.net and Bungie PC communities together,” said Steve Cotton, game director for Destiny 2: Forsaken at Bungie. He added, “With this gift we look forward to seeing new Guardians in our universe.”
The genre-defining Destiny franchise has received global acclaim since its release in 2014, followed by a record-breaking Destiny 2’s PC launch in 2017, the largest PC launch in Activision Publishing history based on units. Developed by Bungie, and brought to PC in partnership with Vicarious Visions, Destiny 2 delivers a native PC experience with PC-specific features such as: 4K resolution support, uncapped frame rate, full mouse and keyboard support with custom key mapping, text chat, adjustable field of view, a detailed PC settings screen, 21:9 and triple monitor support, and HDR. In the story of Destiny 2, the last city on Earth has fallen and lies in ruins. Players must master new abilities and weapons to reunite the city's forces, stand together and fight back to reclaim their home.

At Blizzcon 2018's opening ceremony this morning, World of Warcraft executive producer John Hight announced that the upcoming recreation of World of Warcraft's original release, World of Warcraft Classic, will be free to anyone with an existing World of Warcraft subscription.
World of Warcraft Classic is currently planned for release in summer of 2019 and a playable demo will be available at Blizzcon, or to anyone with a Blizzcon Virtual Ticket.
Classic was announced one year ago as an answer to the growing problem of fan-hosted legacy servers for the game. At the time, then-executive producer (now-Blizzard president) J Allen Brack said that Classi would "replicate the game experience" of Vanilla World of Warcraft, but would be adapted to work better on modern technology.
Some more modern features that have been confirmed already to make it into Classic include colorblind mode, player reporting, Battle.net chat implementation, and widescreen monitor support.

GroovyMame v0.202 SwitchRes v0.017j is released. GroovyMame is a custom M.A.M.E. build mainly aimed at CRT monitors, as we are convinced CRT technology is a must when it comes to enjoying emulation in its full glory. However you can use GroovyMAME to alliviate some of the annoyances associated to emulation on LCD displays, specially for those models which are capable of refreshing at custom rates.
GroovyMame v0.202 SwitchRes v0.017j changelog:
- Attempt at fixing mode selection issues on LCD monitors caused by a mismatch where Windows reports modes as interlaced but AMD drivers return progressive timings.

Virtual ][ v8.6 is released. Virtual is a commercial Apple II emulator for Mac OS. Virtual ][ lets you play the old Apple games, because it supports all graphics modes, lets you control the game paddles with a USB game pad or mouse and emulates the internal speaker. When you want to temporarily interrupt gameplay, Virtual ][ allows you to save the entire virtual machine, and continue later on from where you left off.
But Virtual ][ also supports more "serious" software, because it emulates many peripheral devices: floppy disk, hard disk, mouse, serial port, matrix printer, even cassette tape! It also emulates the Z80A processor, allowing you to run the CP/M operating system.
And for the technically inclined: you can configure the machine by "inserting" and "removing" emulated peripheral cards, change the CPU speed, or even install your own emulated character generator ROM. The "Inspector" feature allows you to closely observe the behavior of the emulated machine and debug Apple II programs.
If you have original diskettes and a working Apple II, Virtual ][ can help you convert the diskettes to the Mac, even if they are "copy protected".
The program automatically indexes all Apple II disk images on your Mac, so you can find an Apple II file instantly, by entering its name.
You can download an evaluation version and try the program first. If you like the program, you can buy a license and fully enjoy the nostalgic fun of the old Apple ][ computer.
Virtual ][ requires an Intel Mac with Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" or better.
Virtual ][ v8.6Changelog:
* Added a keyboard shortcut to enter and exit full screen.
* The Inspector's instruction trail now also shows the processor cycle count at the start of each instruction.
* The instruction trail can now be saved as a tab-separated text file.
* Increased the maximum capacity of the instruction trail to 9999999 instructions (a tenfold increase). This is enough to capture roughly 35 to 40 seconds of CPU activity at regular speed. Be aware that saving such a large trail takes some time and results in a big file!
* When ejecting a diskette, the disk image was always saved, even if the disk had not been modified. This bug was introduced recently, and has now been corrected; a disk image is only saved if the disk contents have acually been changed.
* ProDOS disk images with a ".po" filename extension and a size of 800 KB (or larger) can now be mounted as an OmniDisk, and are also processed by the Spotlight importer.
* Disk images with a .nib extension now show up in the disk search window as "custom file system".
* Fixed an issue in the SCSI card emulation that could corrupt the "screenhole" memory locations in auxiliary memory, whereas it should have used main memory. In the revised ROM code the screen hole memory isn't used anymore at all.
* If a USB or Bluetooth game controller is connected, the option to use the keyboard arrows as a joystick is now disabled. It appeared that the latter option could corrupt the values received from the game controller (even without touching the arrow keys).
* Powering up a virtual machine with an OmniDisk resulted in a boot failure if a higher numbered slot contained a card with expansion ROM. This now works as it should.
* Changed built-in web links from http to https (for servers that support https).
