KingofGnG writes to tell us that the genius behind games like Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, and the SCUMM script engine has returned to bring you another action-adventure entitled "DeathSpank". Showcased at the recent Penny Arcade Expo, the game promises the same adventure-styled gameplay of Monkey Island with the RPG-style gameplay of Diablo. Now all you have to do is get the fish out of your pants and belly up to the SCUMM bar.

Several sites are reporting that the much anticipated SPORE has been released 5 days ahead of the scheduled release date in Australia. I can confirm that SPORE is sitting on shelves in retailers and for the tidy sum of A$95.95 it can be yours. Why the early release exactly seems to be a matter of contention. No news if the game can actually be played yet or if the lucky early punters will still have to wait till the official release when EA allows for any validation process to occur. I guess EA could possibly be using the relatively small population to test the servers...or someone somewhere stuffed up

The ScummVM Team has released a new version of ScummVM for tons of consoles and Operating Systems,
Heres the release details:
We can call it a tremendous development. Half a year since 0.11.1 passed pretty quickly, and we are pleased to announce the release of 0.12.0!
This new version of ScummVM adds support for 5 completely new games. The games that now run smoothly on many more platforms than was initially intended are: The Legend of Kyrandia: Book Two: Hand of Fate, The Legend of Kyrandia: Book Three: Malcolm's Revenge, Lost in Time, The Bizarre Adventures of Woodruff and the Schnibble and Drascula: The Vampire Strikes Back.
The number of supported platforms grew as well. The PS2 port has been revived, and the GameCube and Wii are now supported too. Take your Wiimote and make your beloved adventure game protagonist run around the screen .
For those new to ScummVM heres a description:
ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!
Some of the adventures ScummVM supports include Adventure Soft's Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2; Revolution's Beneath A Steel Sky, Broken Sword 1 and Broken Sword 2; Flight of the Amazon Queen; Wyrmkeep's Inherit the Earth; Coktel Vision's Gobliiins; Westwood Studios' The Legend of Kyrandia and games based on LucasArts' SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) system such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max and more. You can find a thorough list with details on which games are supported and how well on the compatibility page. ScummVM is continually improving, so check back often.

Epic's Cliff Bleszinski has revealed that Gears of War 2 will not see a release on the PC, therefore remaining an Xbox 360 exclusive - unlike its predecessor.
Speaking to IGN, Bleszinski explained that the title was "first and foremost" for the Xbox 360 and that a PC version of the title was not planned.
"Gears of War is a great franchise first and foremost for Xbox 360, and therefore we're focusing on that platform for Gears of War 2. We've decided we're not going to do a PC version this time around," he explained.
This news comes shortly after Epic's President, Michael Capps, expressed dismay that the PC version of Gears of War received a lower review score than the Xbox 360 version, telling MundoRare "I think that's bullsh*t, and I don't understand it."
Earlier this year, Bleszinski commented that PC gaming is in "disarray" and that Epic's focus would be on developing for consoles instead.

The Baltimore Sun reports that security firm Independent Security Evaluators has disclosed vulnerabilities in the popular MMORPGs Age of Conan and Anarchy Online. The flaws (which have since been patched) allowed a malicious user to read files from and take control of another player's computer. The full details of the attack are available, including a video (hi-res MOV) showing how the targeted player's client can be crashed, and how an attacker can save and run scripts on the victim's computer

In the latest Blizzard podcast, Diablo III's lead designer Jay Wilson - we talked to him last week, nice man - reveals that the game is technically in an advanced state of completion, and the team is fully focused on content production.
"A lot of the team is really production focused now and we're generating content for the most part; a lot of the tech and underlying engine is really solid," Wilson said.
While the art team had moved on to building the game's second act, he revealed that "most of the design team is still on Act 1 because we're refining and improving the quests and flow, and some of the big game systems that we haven't really announced yet."
There he goes again with the unannounced "big game systems". Wilson repeatedly referenced these after the game's unveiling at June's Worldwide Invitational in Paris and seems genuinely excited by them. Our bet is that they have something to do with skill trees, or runes, or both.
Wilson revealed that the team was working through the game in a linear fashion, from start to end - "but you want your best work, which you tend to do latest in the project, to be at the beginning of the game". So the team will take plenty of time to revisit what it has already done. "It's pretty much how Blizzard works; we have a tendency to iterate over and over again on everything we do. So we build something and then we rebuild it," he said.
"If we haven't rebuilt something five times it really doesn't deserve to be shipped. That's pretty much our policy." Don't hold your breath for a release date, then.
Wilson went on to discuss several aspects of the game in detail. He explained that, as with previous Diablos, the best way to get the best items would be through trading, but that this system would be more accessible than it was in Diablo II.
"A bartering system is actually a very exclusionary trading system," he said, so Blizzard would be aiming to make a common currency - probably gold - more valuable this time. "A currency really provides a common language: that's the point of a currency... We don't want to do some of the stuff that Diablo II did where they kind of actively devalued gold.
"Really we're trying to allow more people to get into the trading game because the more people that are in it the more fun it will be."
There's an in-depth discussion of the inventory system - moving from the game's traditional (and "pretty unpopular") grid to a World of Warcraft-style simple slot inventory. Wilson promised that "we're going to give people lots of ways to expand and deal with your inventory and... more info on that, coming in the future," with the idea being to reduce the use of "mule" characters. Sharing and trading items will be made much easier, perhaps via a mail system.
Fans hoping for Diablo II's Necromancer class to return will be disappointed, it seems - Wilson said that his team was focused on creating new classes, or returning to ones it felt could be greatly improved, whereas the Necromancer "plays too well".
"The Necromancer is an awesome class, actually my favourite class, from Diablo II, and the class I'm currently playing the most of," Wilson said. "It's not that we just dislike him, we love the Necromancer, but... the issue we have is, he was so well-designed... there's certainly some things we could do a little differently, but do we feel like we can make him so much better, and change his core gameplay experience? If anything, we'd say we really don't want to."
He didn't rule out revisiting it in a future expansion "after we felt like we've kind of established the core Diablo III game," however.
Finally, after yet another lengthy defence of Diablo III's art style, Wilson hinted that the arc of the game would take players from a lighter tone in the beginning into an increasingly dark and apocalyptic setting.
"We really want to make sure that the tone of the game is right, that it's dark, that it's foreboding," he said. "What we showed at WWI really is a very early game content, you know, it's first act dungeon, first act environments.
"And we've made a conscious effort to make sure that the tone gets worse - one of the things that we really want to tell a story of, basically, is the coming apocalypse, and it works best if there's a contrast, you know, if things get worse in act two and act three, and act four... people are probably going to see some environments that feel, tone-wise, a lot more, menacing than what we've shown so far."

Electronic Arts has said its sci-fi survival horror game, Dead Space, will now launch on October 24 for PS3 and 360.
The game was originally due for release on October 31. And that's when the PC version will launch.
"The decision to bring it to fans earlier was due to completing the game early. Having spent months of polishing, it will soon be ready to scare gamers across the UK," said EA.

There's still a week to go until it's out, but Spore is now available to download from the EA Store.
You won't be able to play it yet, but the point is the game will be all nicely pre-loaded when Spore officially launches on September 5th. Then you'll just have to wait half an hour for the game to decrypt before you can play.
The game is priced at GBP 39.99. It's only the PC version that can be downloaded, so Mac owners will have to wait.
Look out for Eurogamer's review of Spore next week.

Blizzard has announced they will be releasing a sizable patch to prepare for the upcoming Wrath of the Lich King expansion to World of Warcraft. The patch, similar to one they released prior to the first expansion, will include the new profession (Inscription), new talents for each class, and two new arenas. The patch will be up on the Public Test Realm "soon," according to a Blizzard rep, but it will require significant testing before reaching the live servers. Blizzard developers Tom Chilton and J. Allen Brack gave a related interview recently to Videogamer in which they mentioned that a graphical reboot for World of Warcraft "may never be necessary." We've been following the development of Wrath of the Lich King for a while now.

So there's still no solid release window planned for the proper return of Duke Nukem Forever but the impending launch of Duke Nukem 3D on Xbox Live will only get people (like us) thinking and wanting the real Duke game.
During an interview with TeamXbox that focused on the Xbox Live remake, 3D Realms boss man George Broussard teased, "It's going really well. There are several hours of fairly polished game to play. We're actively testing parts of the game and getting feedback from play testers and things are coming together."
The good news is that, "It's fun, it's in focus, we know what bits are fun and which are not, and it's just a matter of time now. I've probably never been as happy or excited about the game as I am these days."
Must refuse to make a joke about ten-years in development. They're getting too easy.

Blizzard had a playable demo of StarCraft 2 running at Leipzig, and Kotaku's Michael McWhertor had a chance to sit down and spend some time playing the Zerg. The Zerg weren't available in previous demos; the Protoss and Terran campaigns were showcased earlier. GameSpy took the opportunity to interview two Blizzard employees about what people can expect from the game. Gameplay footage is also available which shows a Terran vs. Zerg battle. Blizzard PR rep Bob Colayco had this to say:
"One thing that's new, as you go through the campaign... you know, normally in RTS games how they start you off with a couple of units and then it's like, 'Okay, two missions later we're going to give you tanks...' One of the things we're looking at doing with StarCraft II's campaign is putting the choice more in the players' hands. So maybe you like dealing more with infantry? You can purchase those upgrades and make your marines and other infantry stronger. Or else you'll save up the credits you get from the missions to get tanks sooner than you normally could."

Merscom announced today's release of Righteous Kill: The Game, inspired by the upcoming feature from Overture Films, Righteous Kill, which has a theatrical release date of September 12, 2008.
The movie stars Robert De Niro and Al Pacino as two veteran New York City detectives who are on the trail of a vigilante serial killer. Similarly, the game centers around Officer Erica Dean as she tries to determine who is killing criminals known for committing crimes against women.
Players step into the shoes of Officer Dean and, with the help of Sergeant Vasquez, make their way through 16 different crime scenes populated with more than a thousand objects. With each clue they collect and piece together, Players come closer to discovering who is responsible for the string of murders.
The first casual game based on a major theatrical release, Righteous Kill: The Game features:
- Animated cut scenes featuring clips from the movie.
- Voice acting throughout the entire game.
- A beautiful and realistic visual style conveying the New York City setting.
- Multiple mini-games bases on detective activities.
"This game is perfect for the casual games audience. It is a cutting-edge hidden objects title but also captures the spirit of what we believe will be one of the biggest films of the year," said Lloyd Melnick, Merscom's Chief Customer Officer.
"We're very excited about this game and its release so close to the movie's theatrical release, " said Marc DeBevoise , senior vice president - digital media, business development and strategy for Starz Media, which handles digital and on-demand distribution of Overture's releases. "We see this a unique opportunity for the movie and causal game audiences to cross-over and cross-promote to each other."

Graphics card manufacturer AMD is going to support EA Phenomic Studio's real-time strategy game Battleforge, Sega's sci-fi RTS Stormrise, and NHN Games' RPG Cloud 9 with DirectX 10.1, the latest application programming interface.
DirectX 10.1 allows graphics cards to take advantage of new graphical effects on computers that support it. While you will need Windows Vista to use DX 10.1, all of AMD's 3000 and 4800 series of cards are compliant with it. While DirectX 10.1 support is possible on Nvidia graphics cards, "Only AMD graphics offer top-to-bottom DirectX 10.1 support," read the public statement.
