YouTube reportedly paid $160m for Activision Blizzard esports exclusivity

The deal between Activision Blizzard and Google for the media rights to the former's esports events is said to have cost $160 million.
That's the figure given by multiple sources to Esports Observer, which reports this total encompasses Call of Duty, Overwatch and Hearthstone. YouTube will exclusively broadcast esports events across these games for three years.
It's not clear how much money each title represents, but sources suggest Overwatch League commands the majority of the sum, with most of the remainder going towards Call of Duty League. Hearthstone is reportedly considered a free throw-in.
A previous exclusivity deal for the Overwatch League was reportedly valued at $90 million over the course of two years.
The new deal with Google apparently includes significant but achievable incentive clauses for viewership targets and ad sales. So, even though the amount allocated to Overwatch is no an increase from its previous Twitch deal, teams and executives involved are happy with the partnership.

byuu v0.10 is released. byuu is a multi-system emulator that focuses on accuracy and ease-of-use. It is currently in early release beta status. byuu is an upcoming multi-system emulator that aims to provide the accuracy of higan, with the ease-of-use of bsnes. It seeks to accomplish this by catering to the common 99% of use cases, rather than higan, which tries to cater to every niche. As such, certain advanced functionality will not be available in byuu; however, the emulator will be significantly easier to use, like bsnes.

Planned roadmap:
v1: support for gamepad mapping and the save state manager
v2: support for other controller types (mice, light guns) and multiple-players
v3: support for Famicom Disk System, Super Game Boy, and Sega CD emulation
v?: support for per-system input mapping, cheat codes, movie recording, and run-ahead functionality
v?+X: optional scanline renderers for each core to boost performance substantially
v?+Y: additional emulation cores from outside of higan (PS1, Saturn, N64 would be most promising!)

Activision Blizzard pulls all games from GeForce Now a week after launch

GeForce Now users will no longer be able to play their Activision Blizzard titles through Nvidia's newly-launched streaming service.
Emerging out of beta last week, GeForce Now enables players to stream games they have purchased through digital stores, allowing them to enjoy titles that may not run on their own hardware.
However, support for all Activision Blizzard titles -- including World of Warcraft, Overwatch and the Call of Duty series -- has been removed. Nvidia explained the change on its forums, emphasising that this was the publisher's decision, but was unable to give a reason.
"As we take GeForce Now to the next step in its evolution, we've worked with publishers to onboard a robust catalog of your PC games," community manager Cory Banks wrote. "This means continually adding new games, and on occasion, having to remove games - similar to other digital service providers.
"Per their request, please be advised Activision Blizzard games will be removed from the service. While unfortunate, we hope to work together with Activision Blizzard to reenable these games and more in the future."
Banks emphasised that the service still supports hundreds of games, with more than 1,000 others on the way. A casual search through the GeForce Now site shows the streaming service supports titles from Ubisoft, Bethesda, 2K Games, Koch/Deep Silver, Paradox Interactive and more.

OpenTTD v1.10.0-RC1 is released. OpenTTD is an open source simulation game based upon the popular Microprose game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe", written by Chris Sawyer. It attempts to mimic the original game as closely as possible while extending it with new features.

Features
OpenTTD is modelled after the original Transport Tycoon game by Chris Sawyer and enhances the game experience dramatically. Many features were inspired by TTDPatch while others are original.

Significant enhancements from the original game include:

Blizzard president on Warcraft 3 Reforged: "We stand behind our games"

The launch of Blizzard's remake of its 2002 RTS game, Warcraft 3, isn't going swimmingly. And the company's investors have noticed.
During today's Q4 earnings call, Blizzard president J. Allen Brack was asked about the game's rocky launch over a week ago, which has seen backlash from fans accusing it of performance issues, cutscenes visibly different from those shown at the game's 2018 announcement, changing popular elements of the original game, and an end user license agreement change that hurts the custom game community. The backlash grew strong enough that the game was review-bombed by users on Metacritic, resulting in an 0.5 out of 100 user score -- the lowest currently on the platform.

Nvidia launches GeForce Now cloud gaming service at $4.99/month

Nvidia has officially launched its GeForce Now cloud gaming platform out of beta, opening up cloud gaming support across PC, Mac, Android, and TV (via Nvidia Shield) via existing PC game storefronts.
The service is split into two tiers: a free edition, and a paid founders edition. The founders edition costs $4.99 per month, and offers priority access to servers, play sessions up to six hours long, and access to games with ray tracing supported. Free users may have to wait in queues to access servers and will be capped at sessions one hour long, though there's no limit to how many times a user can queue in any period. Both plans support streaming at 1080p and 60fps. As it's a streaming service, all games are intended to function at these levels regardless of the power of the user's device.

Kentucky officials trying to ban Fortnite from varsity esports

The addition of Fortnite to student programmes has been met with hostility in Kentucky, after one official attempted to ban the game from state-level varsity esports.
In an email seen by the Lexington Herald-Leader, Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) commissioner Julian Tackett said: "There is no place for shooter games in our schools."
Tackett's comments came after high school esports organisation PlayVS partnered with Epic Games to establish a competitive national club league for high school and college-level Fortnite.
"I want to personally assure you that we, along with the NFHS [National Federation of State High School Associations] Network are proactively taking steps to have this decision reversed," Tackett said.
"There is no place for shooter games in our schools. This announcement was particularly troubling in that it came on the anniversary of one of Kentucky's darkest days, the Marshall County incident."
Tackett's comments refer to the 2018 fatal shooting at Marshall County High School in Kentucky, which left two students dead and several injured.
He told the Washington Post that adding Fortnite to esports programmes "violates the contract signed by PlayVs and the NFHS... and places the future of that program at peril."

Release of ScummVM 2.1.1 ":More Sheep:"

After a short break, the ScummVM Team is pleased to announce a bugfix release for the 2.1 series - ScummVM 2.1.1, codenamed “:More Sheep:”.
This release contains a substantial amount of fixes and minor enhancements. The most notable ones are: better multi-language support in the GUI, improvements in FM TOWNS/PC-98 audio, optimisations of the cloud saves, a couple dozen SCI script fixes, improvements to Blade Runner and fixes to another 7 engines. Also, this is the first release with official support for the Nintendo 3DS. Additionally, we added cloud support to the Nintendo Switch port.

Can Alyx pull VR out of its niche?

Given how many people have been waiting for so very long for a new Half-Life game, it's entirely unsurprising that the upcoming Half-Life: Alyx is making some pretty big ripples in the pond even before its launch.
One of the more notable of these is its impact on the Valve Index, the company's high-end VR headset, which had struggled to make its mark prior to the Alyx announcement. Now, it's sold out almost everywhere, with keen consumers rapidly burning through stock of the device towards the end of last year. Superdata reported that Valve sold 103,000 Index headsets in the final quarter of the year, but given the inventory issues, it's hard to say what kind of numbers the device might have done if all of the consumer demand could have been satisfied.
These numbers are pretty impressive when you consider that the Index is a luxury, high-end headset that's priced to match -- it's often cited as a thousand-dollar headset, but in many territories consumers would have to spend significantly more than that to buy the full headset, controller and sensor kit required to get the complete experience.

More than $5m worth of Oculus content was sold on Christmas Day

The CEO of Facebook says the firm has "hit a real milestone for virtual reality" thanks to Oculus Quest, demostrated by strong holiday sales for VR games.
During an earnings call after its most recent financial results, transcribed by Seeking Alpha, Mark Zuckerberg told investors that while the company's dreams for full augmented reality is "still a number of years away," Oculus is seeing real momentum with virtual reality.
"Sales are stronger than we expected, and people are buying and engaging with more content than we'd expected to," he said. "On Christmas Day, people bought almost $5 million worth of content in the Oculus store."
Zuckerberg recognised this was "an outlier day" but said it was still "real volume by any measure" and "shows the progress that this ecosystem is making."
Later in the call, Zuckerberg answered a question about Facebook's overall gaming strategy, following the social network's exclusivity deals with games streamers and its acquisition of Playgiga towards the end of 2019.

RetroBat v2.1 is released. RetroBat is a set of Batch and Powershell scripts written to easily configure and launch EmulationStation for Windows. This frontend software is intended to gather your ROMs collection and run games with compatible emulators such as RetroArch. RetroBat can download and install all the softwares you need to have a good retrogaming experience on your PC. RetroBat is designed to run in Portable Mode. It means that you can either start it from HDD or from any removable storage device, as long as you do it on a computer that meets the requirements.

RetroBat v2.1 changelog:
- RetroBat is now compatible with 64 bit AND 32 bit Windows x86 computers.
- Bump RetroArch to 1.8.4.
- Hotkeys are enabled in RetroArch configuration.

Warcraft 3 Reforged EULA gives Blizzard total ownership of all custom games

If you're a custom game creator for the original Warcraft 3 who's preparing to move your creations to the newly released "Reforged" remake, you'd better study up on the changes to the game's End User License Agreement -- specifically the acceptable use policy for custom games.
As spotted by PC Gamer, Blizzard has updated its Custom Game Acceptable Use Policy to give itself complete ownership of all custom games.
"Custom Games are and shall remain the sole and exclusive property of Blizzard," reads the section. "Without limiting the foregoing, you hereby assign to Blizzard all of your rights, title, and interest in and to all Custom Games, including but not limited to any copyrights in the content of any Custom Games."
