Back in 2019, it was revealed that RetroArch would be headed to Steam, bringing the emulator frontend to the platform for the first time ever. Things have been fairly quiet since then, but now we've got some new details regarding the launch of the program. There's still no projected release date, but we now have a clearer idea of how RetroArch will work on Steam. The initial program will be free, and each core that loads different emulators will be available separately, as additional free DLC. 47 cores will be available on launch, each legally secured and with permission granted from the original developer, with more to follow at a later date. Those cores are as follows: - bsnes
- bsnes HD beta
- Final Burn Neo
- Flycast
- Mesen
- Mesen S
- Nestopia
- Play!
- SameBoy
- TIC-80
- EasyRPG
- Mupen64 Plus Next
- Kronos
- Theodore
- Blastem
- Stella
- Snes9x
- mGBA
- 4DO
- Genesis Plus GX
- 2048
- RACE
- VBA-M
- NeoCD
- FreeIntv
- FreeChaf
- QuickNES
- Picodrive
- Game Music Emu
- GW (Game & Watch)
- PX68K
- REminiscence
- XRick
- Desmume
- gpSP
- PocketCDG
- Tyrquake
- Vitaquake 2
- boom3
- EightyOne/81
- Gearsystem
- CrocoDS
- Gearboy
- Caprice32
- Parallel N64
- PPSSPP
- NP2Kai
In addition, none of the cores, nor RetroArch itself will have any DRM, including Steamworks. You'll even be able to boot it via the shortcut, without requiring Steam to be running in the background.
What To Expect
This is what one can expect for the impending launch:
- RetroArch as an application itself, when installed through Steam, will be able to be launched even without Steam being active. Therefore, no kind of DRM is being imposed.
- RetroArch as well as the cores will be provided completely for free.
- The cores do not have any kind of DRM applied to them.
- No Steamworks integration. If it will ever happen, it will be done through a separate process as has been done by plenty of other Steam GPL-licensed programs/games.
- We will never provide any copyrighted content that we do not have permission to under any circumstance. Out of the gates, you will be able to run disk-based content from a CD-ROM drive with many CD-based emulators. There is also a preservation-focused project in the work that will make it easier to preserve your legally bought cartridges, but more on that as we get closer to release.

WineD3D v5.0 is relesaed. WineD3D For Windows is a DirectX 1-11 to OpenGL wrapper based on WineD3D, which is an almost full implementation of DirectX used in Wine. Even if Windows supports DirectX natively, using WineD3D can enhance backwards compatiblity with older games, especially on Windows 8 and newer that don't support 16 bit screen modes. Another possible use is to emulate unsupported versions of DirectX, or porting DirectX applications to OpenGL without having to rewrite the rendering code.

The executive producer of Doom Eternal has revealed that the team behind the first-person shooter spent months in crunch before deciding to push back the game's release.
In an interview with VG247, Marty Stratton said the studio attempted to balance the extra hours so that some members of staff were given a break, but admits the working schedule was intense.
"We were crunching pretty hard most of last year," he said. "It goes in phases... We'll have one group of people crunching so the next group of people are teed up properly. As they get done, they may need to crunch a little bit.
"We really truly do try and be very respectful of peoples' time and lives. We have very dedicated people that just choose to work a lot in many cases. It was nice because we want the game to be perfect. We want it to live up to our expectations and consumer expectations."

Want to re-familiarize yourself with the Half-Life franchise? Or interested in trying the series for the first time? You'll be able to, easily, thanks to a new promotion held by Valve. In order to hype people up for the imminent launch of Half-Life Alyx, all the games in the franchise are free to play on Steam, for a limited time. Running from today until Alyx's release, Half-Life 1, Half-Life 2: Episode 1 and 2, Source, Opposing Force, and Blue Shift are all available for Steam owners to download. These aren't free to keep, but you'll be able to play them without cost for the next two months.

Here is the text - Here is an announcement for the official English setup for Daisenryaku VII. All the menus, dialogues, weapons, and windows are 100% in English! While a version of this was released for Playstation 2, this one has different maps and also has an old-school method of multiplayer where you can email or trade save files in order for other participants to take turns, very much similar in the ways of long-distance chess through the mail. We hope you enjoy this release!

We are releasing a new playtest today that refines and fixes several issues in the current release.
The full Changelog includes:
- Fixed significant performance and behaviour regressions with aircraft
- Fixed rare crashes during gameplay and when loading saved games
- Fixed several behaviour issues with unit and bot AI
- Fixed missing team chat in game replays
- Fixed build failures caused by an upstream API change
- Improved build icon layout in RA and D2k sidebars
- Improved in-game menu option layout
A new Mod SDK release is also available with a number of additional fixes for modders.
Since we expect this to be the only playtest before a final hotfix release around the start of February, we encourage everybody (especially those who like to play in multiplayer team games) to try a game or two, and to let us know if we have missed any other issues or accidentally introduced new ones.
As always, we welcome feedback in the comments below, on our forum, Discord, or GitHub pages.

RetroArch v1.8.4 is released. RetroArch is a multi-system emulator for Linux, Windows, Mac OS X and *BSD. It is formerly known as SSNES. Its design and background is quite different than most other emulators as RetroArch does not implement an emulation core itself. RetroArch talks to libretro, a generic emulator core API. This means that RetroArch is core agnostic, and it does not care which emulator core is running.
Currently there are libretro implementations for systems such as SNES, NES, GBA, GB/GBC, Genesis, and even arcade games (Final Burn Alpha).
libretro isn't only usable for emulators. A preliminary port of an open source reimplementation of Cave Story has been ported to libretro as well.
RetroArch believes in modularity. The application itself is a command-line driven application suitable for HTPC and/or headless use. There also exists a GUI frontend for RetroArch, supporting every single config option available in RetroArch.

Exclusivity deals may be a contentious topic among gamers these days, but that doesn't seem to be dissuading companies looking to establish new platforms from scratch. As reported by Eurogamer, Stadia Games and Entertainment is the latest to adopt the idea whole-heartedly, as Google's game-streaming service is pursuing a full slate of exclusive titles in the near future.
"Looking at our upcoming lineup, we are tracking more than 120 games coming to Stadia in 2020, and are targeting more than 10 games in the first half of this year alone that will be only available on Stadia when they launch," the company said today, implying the exclusivity will be for a limited time. "We're working with our partners to share more on those games soon."

The 2017 PS4-exclusive Horizon: Zero Dawn may be on its way to PCs, according to a new report.
Multiple sources told Kotaku that the post-apocalyptic open-world adventure would head to both Steam and the Epic Games Store sometime this year. What's more, it may experience an upgrade in its new PC home, without having to be locked at 30 fps as it was on the console.
Sony has been public about its consideration for releasing PS4 exclusives on PC in the future, with SIE Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden admitting the company's previously strict stance about keeping exclusives exclusive might be changing in an interview last year.

Google Stadia has partnered with telecom firm BT in order to deliver its game streaming services to UK customers.
The deal sees BT become the first European network to partner with Google for the Stadia; the telecom firm is promising the "best cloud gaming experience" with its BT Superfast Broadband 2 service, which is reportedly six-times faster than the average speed of UK broadband.
To commemorate the partnership, BT is launching a number of different Google Stadia offers, which include free Stadia hardware, trial subscriptions, and broadband packages; this will be accompanied by an ad campaign across print, TV and digital.
