QEMU v4.1.0-rc0 is released. QEMU is a generic and open source machine emulator and virtualizer. When used as a machine emulator, QEMU can run OSes and programs made for one machine (e.g. an ARM board) on a different machine (e.g. your own PC). By using dynamic translation, it achieves very good performances. When used as a virtualizer, QEMU achieves near native performances by executing the guest code directly on the host CPU. A host driver called the QEMU accelerator (also known as KQEMU) is needed in this case. The virtualizer mode requires that both the host and guest machine use x86 compatible processors.

WinFellow v0.5.8 is released. WinFellow is a high performance Amiga Emulator primarily targeted for Windows. It's distinguished API and core does however allow a fairly easy port to other OS.
WinFellow v0.5.8 Changelog:
New features
support for RDB hardfiles was implemented; while creating a new hardfile from the WinFellow GUI still creates “plain” hardfiles, a Rigid Disk Block can be created using tools like HD Toolbox
the default naming scheme for filesystem devices has been changed from DHx: to FSx: to avoid naming conflicts with existing RDB hardfiles
a 64 bit build is now provided; the NSIS installer will install either the 32 or 64 bit version depending on the operating system that is used
Bug fixes
improved handling of hardware interrupts and blitter delays; fixes freezes that could occur during installation of Workbench in earlier 0.5.x versions
fix wrong selection of render function after return from menu when application did not write to bplcon0 every frame; fixes garbled graphics in a Legend cracktro when returning from menu
replaced alternating patterns for unmapped memory with proper random numbers
CLR reads before write; fixes loading of Outrun and a fast-mem test in Last Ninja 2
improve delay caused by logging in screen-mode enumeration (could amount to many seconds with multiple screens)
running in an environment with very slow graphics framerate, like a VM, could cause a deadlock; set wait time after event reset to avoid race condition
fix an issue where screenshots would occasionally not be taken in Direct3D graphics mode; this may also have impacted the ability to use Amiga Forever’s clipping editor
fix an issue where applying a new model preset would leave multiple blitter radio buttons selected
Maintenance updates
project files were updated to Visual Studio 2019 using the toolset v141_xp
the February 2010 DirectX SDK dependency was eliminated
IPF Access API files were updated to the latest version, and support for it was enabled in 64 bit builds
See the included file ChangeLog.txt for a full list of changes, including minor bug fixes which may not be listed above.

When you think emulator frontends, there's a high chance that RetroArch comes to mind. Its simple design and ease of use have made it an incredibly popular application, for years and years. And now, you'll be able to officially use RetroArch from the comfort of Steam. In an attempt to legitimize and grow their brand, Libretro will be releasing RetroArch on Steam, at the end of the month. It'll launch on July 30th, for free, and on Windows only, initially, with a Linux and MacOS version to follow shortly after. There won't be any difference between the Steam build and the one you can get normally on Libretro's official site, but the team is looking into incorporating features from Steam's platform in the future. This feature follows a recent RetroArch update, which lets users directly dump their official game discs to their computer, allowing for easy backups. You'll also be able to take a Sega CD, Saturn, PlayStation 1, or 3D0 disc. put it in your PC's disc drive, and run it directly on RetroArch, with more consoles to be supported in the future.
There are also plans in the works for developers of older IPs to release their games on Steam, through using RetroArch, though no further details are known about that yet.

Steam's summer sale continued last week, keeping a number of older releases at the top of the EMEAA charts with no new releases coming in to disrupt them.
Grand Theft Auto V took the No.1 spot once more, pushing Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled down into No.2. Super Mario Maker 2 held its own at No.3, and that's without the addition of digital sales data for Nintendo.
It's worth noting that last week's EMEAA charts appear to have been missing data from Take-Two Interactive that has since been added. High sales for Borderlands: The Pre-sequel and Borderlands 2 last week are why the "last week" numbers show some discrepancies when compared with the charts previously reported.
But with Take Two's data included this week as well, we can see how well the two Borderlands games are doing as a result of the Steam summer sale, free DLC for Borderlands 2 to bridge the story to Borderlands 3, and anticipation for said third game in a few months.
Another telling point is that (again likely due to Steam's sales), digital unit sales broken down by platform show almost all PC sales, all the way down. Grand Theft Auto V on PS4 was No.4 (the PC version was No.3) and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled on PS4 was at No.6, but after that we don't see another non-PC game until No.23 (Need for Speed: Rivals), and there are no Xbox One games until No. 67 (Minecraft). Though again, without Nintendo Switch digital data, that point is slightly blunted.

One of the big concerns around game streaming centers on game ownership -- if you can't download a purchased game to your device, it can theoretically be "taken" from you at any time.
Speaking to VP and head of Google Stadia Phil Harrison at a roundtable, Gamesradar+ found out at least one facet of how that might work on Stadia when it launches in November - specifically, in an instance where a developer or publisher pulls support for a game that people have already purchased.

The Age of Empires games are still played by more than one million people every month, according to the series' creative director.
Speaking to PCGamesN, Microsoft's Adam Isgreen said that "over a million people a month" play the various games in the long-running strategy series, "and the numbers keep going up."
Isgreen has been a creative director for Xbox Game Studios at Microsoft for nine years, and he has been focused on Age of Empires for the last four.
The remarkable thing about the number of players the series continues to attract is that the last full game, Age of Empires III, was released in 2005. The three games and their various expansions were given a new commercial life on digital platforms like Steam, where they are often available at steep discounts.

Valve is already exploring "several methods"of making an untethered version of its Index virtual reality headset, according to co-founder Gabe Newell.
In a speech at a launch event for the hardware -- -- Newell stated that shipping any product is the beginning of a process, rather than the end. He then listed some "obvious next steps" that Valve will now take with the Index.
"It's simple for us to broaden our distribution, outside of the US to the EU and other countries," Newell said. "There are obvious ways for us to lower the cost, to make the product lighter, ways we can improve the ergonomics."
These are indeed obvious moves for a company to make with new hardware, but Newell also mentioned "speculative issues" that Valve has already started to tackle.
"We are looking at several methods of doing untethered Index," he continued. "We have a lot of ideas for revolutionary things to do with the display and optical technology.
"There are a lot of opportunities to improve the volumes that you're tracking, and the simplicity with which you're being tracked in those spaces."
The prospect of an untethered iteration of the Index is exciting, given that the lack of any cables has proved to be such a seductive quality in the Oculus Quest. However, Valve Index is being sold on the fidelity of its visuals, audio and tracking, which all contribute to a daunting $1000 price tag.
Newell said that progress in these speculative areas will enable "new VR games from Valve," as well as from its various partners. Earlier in his speech, he also mentioned that the "knuckles" controllers will lead to "new kinds of games."
In his opening statements, Newell placed the Index in a lineage of key "milestones" for Valve, which included the launch of Half-Life, the launch of the Source engine, and the launch of Steam.

WineD3D v4.11 is relesaed. WineD3D For Windows is a DirectX 1-11 to OpenGL wrapper based on WineD3D, which is an almost full implementation of DirectX used in Wine. Even if Windows supports DirectX natively, using WineD3D can enhance backwards compatiblity with older games, especially on Windows 8 and newer that don't support 16 bit screen modes. Another possible use is to emulate unsupported versions of DirectX, or porting DirectX applications to OpenGL without having to rewrite the rendering code.
