Valve today released an assortment of statistics for the 2020 performance of its digital storefront Steam, providing further perspective on just how much the games industry grew while the global pandemic limited people's entertainment alternatives.
Over the course of 2020, Steam saw 120 million monthly active players, with daily active players of 62.6 million. Game sales were up 21.4% year-over-year, with the total number of hours played on Steam jumping 50.7%.
"While Steam was already seeing significant growth in 2020 before COVID-19 lockdowns, video game playtime surged when people started staying home, dramatically increasing the number of customers buying and playing games, and hopefully bringing some joy to counter-balance some of the craziness that was 2020," the company said.

JSLinux (2021/01/09) is released. Run Linux or other Operating Systems in your browser! The JavaScript PC Emulator using the W3C Typed Arrays code is available in some browsers. The program was tested on Firefox and Chrome 11 to 4 on both Linux, Mac and Windows.
It emulates a PC with the following components:
- A 32-bit x86-compatible CPU, near a 486 without FPU
- A programmable interrupt controller 8259,
- A Programmable Timer Interrupt 8254,
- A chip UART 16450,
- A real time clock.
The emulated computer loads a version of Linux 2.6.20, which contains an FPU emulator. To make this functional operating system, a full MMU was implemented.
JSLinux Changelog:
TinyEMU runs inside JSLinux using the (emulated) Linux KVM virtualization API (see the /opt/temu directory in the Alpine Linux x86 distribution)

Linux Mint 20.1 is now available.
The first stable release of Linux Mint in 2021 is available in the three flavors Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce. The new version of the Linux distribution is based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Linux kernel 5.4...
- Linux Mint 20.1 comes with a unified file system that sees certain directories being merged with their counterparts in /usr, e.g. /bin merged with /usr/bin, /lib merged with /usr/lib for compatibility purposes...
- The developers have added an option to turn websites into desktop applications in the new version [using the new Web App manager]... Web apps behave like desktop programs for the most part; they start in their own window and use a custom icon, and you find them in the Alt-Tab interface when you use it. Web apps can be pinned and they are found in the application menu after they have been created.

"With the runaway success of the new ARM-based M1 Macs, non-x86 architectures are getting their closeup," explains a new article at ZDNet.
"RISC-V is getting the most attention from system designers looking to horn-in on Apple's recipe for high performance. Here's why..."RISC-V is, like x86 and ARM, an instruction set architecture (ISA). Unlike x86 and ARM, it is a free and open standard that anyone can use without getting locked into someone else's processor designs or paying costly license fees...
Reaching the end of Moore's Law, we can't just cram more transistors on a chip. Instead, as Apple's A and M series processors show, adding specialized co-processors — for codecs, encryption, AI — to fast general-purpose RISC CPUs can offer stunning application performance and power efficiency. But a proprietary ISA, like ARM, is expensive. Worse, they typically only allow you to use that ISA's hardware designs, unless, of course, you're one of the large companies — like Apple — that can afford a top-tier license and a design team to exploit it. A canned design means architects can't specify tweaks that cut costs and improve performance. An open and free ISA, like RISC-V, eliminates a lot of this cost, giving small companies the ability to optimize their hardware for their applications. As we move intelligence into ever more cost-sensitive applications, using processors that cost a dollar or less, the need for application and cost-optimized processors is greater than ever...
While open operating systems, like Linux, get a lot of attention, ISAs are an even longer-lived foundational technology. The x86 ISA dates back 50 years and today exists as a layer that gets translated to a simpler — and faster — underlying hardware architecture. (I suspect this fact is key to the success of the macOS Rosetta 2 translation from x86 code to Apple's M1 code.)
Of course, an open ISA is only part of the solution. Free standard hardware designs — with tools to design more — and smart compilers to generate optimized code are vital. That larger project is what Berkeley's Adept Lab is working on. As computing continues to permeate civilization, the cost of sub-optimal infrastructure will continue to rise.
Optimizing for efficiency, long-life, and broad application is vital for humanity's progress in a cyber-enabled world.
One RISC-V feature highlighted by the article: 128-bit addressing (in addition to 32 and 64 bit).

Mozilla developers plan to remove support for using the Backspace key as a Back button inside Firefox. From a report:The change is currently active in the Firefox Nightly version and is expected to go live in Firefox 86, scheduled to be released next month, in late February 2021. The removal of the Backspace key as a navigational element didn't come out of the blue. It was first proposed back in July 2014, in a bug report opened on Mozilla's bug tracker. At the time, Mozilla engineers argued that many users who press the Backspace key don't always mean to navigate to the previous page (the equivalent of pressing the Back button).

Gaming was a more frequent topic of conversation on Twitter in 2020 than ever before, the company confirmed today in a summary of gaming activity on the platform last year.
According to Twitter, there were more than 2 billion tweets about gaming last year, up 75% year-over-year, and with a 49% jump in the number of accounts posting about gaming.
As for where those tweets were coming from, there was little change from last year's results, with Japan, the United States, and Korea maintaining their grip on the top three spots, in that order.

Microsoft is making a big change to its Windows 10 taskbar soon, with the addition of a news and weather widget. The Verge reports:
The new feature is available to testers today, and it will allow Windows 10 users to access a feed of news, stocks, and weather information straight from the taskbar. You'll be able to quickly glance at the weather without having to open the Start menu, install a third-party app, or check online. The taskbar feature will pop out into a mini feed of content that can be personalized with the latest sports news, headlines, and weather information. Microsoft is using its Microsoft News network to surface news and content from more than 4,500 sources. The company has been curating this through artificial intelligence in recent months, and this particular feature will also learn what news is relevant to you when you dismiss or like stories in the feed.
This new taskbar feature will also require Microsoft's Chromium-based Edge to be installed on a PC. That means any link you click within the feature will force you into Edge to read it, and Microsoft is presenting content in the reading view by default. You can of course disable this new taskbar feature, and Microsoft says it will be an ad-free experience.

A Tomb Raider game lost to time has resurfaced online and is playabe if you you're willing to compile some source code. "Tomb Raider: 10th Anniversary Edition" was a remake of the original game in development for the PSP by Core Design. Although the title was said to be "almost finished" according to the studio's manager Gavin Rummery, the game was scrapped and re-skinned into an Indiana Jones game which also ended up on the chopping block as the studio closed its doors in 2010. Crystal Dynamics focused on the multiplatform "Tomb Raider: Anniversary" and the "10th Anniversary Edition" became one of the unattainable Holy Grails for the Tomb Raider fanbase, until today. Now you'll be able to play the alpha version of the title and explore the Croft Mansion, Greece and Peru levels as long as you have Visual Studio and a compatible game controller. Although the levels feature no enemies, it's always fun to see what could've been.

Epic Games isn't stopping their trend of giving games away anytime soon, going by what they have on offer for next week. Star Wars: Battlefront II's Celebration Edition is set to be the latest giveaway game on Epic's launcher, starting later this month. EA and DICE's 2017 shooter has been under much controversy and criticism since even before launch, due to the game's lootbox mechanics, which were removed and later refined to not impact gameplay. You can grab the game when it becomes available for free on January 14th.
Currently, Crying Suns is the free game on tap from Epic--a tactical roguelite game that considers itself as "FTL meets Dune". It's normally priced at $24.99, and can be gotten for free until January 14th.

Ootake v2.99 is released. Ootake is a PC Engine emulator for Windows. Ootake is the most frequently updated PC Engine emulator available for windows, and Ootake is also one of the more complete. Also, Ootake is FREE unlike Magic Engine.
Ootake v2.99 Changelog::
- The screen display processing has been sped up. The number of models that
can operate comfortably even on low-power PCs has increased.
* By the way, one note about the video card settings of the PC. If you set
the G-SYNC function and FreeSync(Adaptive-Sync) function to "Enable in
even Window mode" on a PC equipped with NVIDIA or AMD video chip, the
operation of Ootake etc. may be slow down depending on the PC environment.
(The default settings are fine)
* If G-SYNC and FreeSync are set to "Enable even in Window mode", many games
(such as games with fixed 60fps) will not work comfortably. Therefore, set
"G-SYNC / FreeSync is disabled in Window mode (default is disabled)". I
strongly recommend it.
- The volume balance of the CD sound source (CD-DA), ADPCM sound source, and
wave memory sound source has been finely adjusted to bring it closer to
the feeling of an actual machine.
- Fixed a bug that noise might appear on the CD sound source depending on
the setting environment of "Audio->Adjust CD-DA(for Sync)".
- The default audio settings has been changed from "DirectSound (a
vocalization method that has existed since the Windows 95 era)" to
"XAudio2 (currently the mainstream vocalization method)". Depending on
your PC environment and taste, "DirectSound" may be better, so please
choose the one you like. In addition, XAudio2 can play the sound at a
timing closer to the actual machine. (In "Audio" menu)
- The operation speed and timing have been brought closer to the operation
of the actual machine. The problem that the screen was shaking when going
up the stairs when clearing the stage of "Prince of Persia" (occurred in
recent versions) has been solved.
- Fixed the sprite display processing part. Solved the problem that
unnecessary sprites were sometimes displayed at the bottom of the screen
when the 1st page boss of "Tiki Tiki Boys" appeared. Also, when your
character overlaps the water areas on the 1st and 4-1 stages, the problem
that your character did not hide has been resolved.
- When playing "Tiki Tiki Boys", the bottom two lines of the screen are
automatically masked with a black belt. (As with the actual machine, the
reason is that noise may be displayed.) * If you play in the mode to
display the overscan area, this process will not be performed and the
display will be the same as the actual machine (the bottom edge may be
disturbed).
- In "Turrican", the problem that it is canceled in a few seconds when you
pause during the game has been solved.
- When starting "The Addams Family", the screen display is shifted to the
right by half a character. By doing this, the disturbance of the screen
display on the right end (which also occurs on the actual machine) has
been reduced. * Also, if you press the [F11] key and play in the display
range of the old TV, the disturbance will disappear at all. * If you turn
on the "Perform SpriteLimit" setting or play in the mode that displays the
overscan area, this correction will not be performed and the display will
be the same as the actual machine (with distortion at the right end).
- Due to certain settings (combination of "Audio Buffer Size" and "CD-DA
Delay Frame", which will change the timing of access to the CD-ROM
slightly), the "Snatcher" may freeze at the start. The problem that was
there has been solved.
- Fixed a bug that the "CPU-> Swap STRIKE & BALL (for Baseball Games)" menu
(baseball game count display replacement function) did not work in v2.98.
- In "Tokimeki Memorial", if you turn on the sprite missing display setting
(CPU-> Perform SpriteLimit) or display the overscan area ([F12] key), dust
that is sometimes displayed on the left and right edges of the screen on
the actual machine (probably used as a data area) is displayed.
- When used on Windows 10/8/7/Vista, it is displayed in a new type file
dialog (when opening a ROM image, etc.). This solves the problem that when
the audio setting was set to "XAudio2", noise (remaining sound from the
previous game play) might be heard when reopening the ROM image file.
- When moving the Ootake window, if the lower part of the game screen hangs
on the taskbar area, the position is automatically corrected so that the
lower part is just right and there is no gap.
- Since the official homepage site has been changed to SSL (HTTPS), the URL
of each document has been changed from "http" to "https".
- When using XAudio2(Audio menu) on Windows XP, the problem (occurring from
v2.82) that the operation when opening a file may become unusually heavy
depending on the environment has been fixed.
- Other minor details have been fixed and improved.
+ I began Twitter. (Japanese language & a little English language)
https://twitter.com/kitao_n
* The happiness of the game is the world human race commonness. It longs for
peace.
* I think that it cannot do improvement & correction of the above-mentioned
if there are many neither operation report nor defe.

Where CD Projekt Red's previous game, The Witcher, 3 had you play as Geralt from a third-person perspective, the developers changed things up with Cyberpunk 2077, making it take place in first-person. Some weren't entirely pleased by that choice, however, and one modder has taken it upon themselves to add over-the-shoulder camera modes to Cyberpunk 2077. Created by a person under the name of Jelle Bakker, the "TPP Mod WIP Third Person" mod adds four adjustable camera angles to the game, letting you see your character as you play. As the name implies, the mod is very much a WIP, because while it does let you play in third-person, it comes with its fair share of glitches, anywhere from not animating at all if you try to swim, or your character model having a few issues with using weapons. If you're interested in trying it out, you can grab it on NexusMods.
