The sequel machine is running at full speed at Sega, with Creative Assembly pouring new material into the tanks. There's both good news and bad news, as a new game has entered development.
NextGen has been talking to Sega's Scott Steinberg at E3 and got the following statement:
“…We’ve got the Creative Assembly guys doing Medieval and the follow along to Rome which we haven’t announced yet.”
So, Rome 2 is most possibly on its way. And now, back to the good news/ bad news bit. First, the good news: up till now, Creative Assembly has succeeded in doing a good game, followed b a bad game. Shogun Total War (the first title in the series) was undoubtedly a good game, followed by Medieval, which failed to deliver the same experience. The release of Rome Total War took Creative Assembly to new heights (and on Sega's payroll), while Medieval 2 was something of a big disappointment.
Now, Rome 2 is scheduled to fill the ranks and if Creative Assembly sticks with its development habits, it will be a good game.
The bad news is that many fans were expecting the series to move forward into the modern age and deploy new troops on the battlefield. The Napoleon Total War mod for the first Medieval game tried to do this years back, but it seriously lacked polishing.
Rome 2 means no modern age war. Furthermore, if Rome 2 is followed by a Total War game set in the modern age, it would most probably share the fate of Medieval 2.
