While few details were given, the developer confirmed at PAX Australia (via Polygon) that the remakes are in the works for modern Windows PCs and will be released via digital distribution channels. It's unclear if the developer intends to enhance in-game assets and effects, or if the remakes will simply comprise of optimisations to make them run on modern PC hardware. Gearbox acquired the rights to the Homeworld franchise during the THQ IP auctions in April for $1.35 million. Brian Martel, Gearbox Software's Chief Creative Officer, was said to have "personally spearheaded the acquisition" out of his "great love and respect" for the Relic-developed games, which were launch in 1999 and 2003 respectively.
"Brian intends as first priority to direct Gearbox's interest to preserve and assemble the purest form of the original acclaimed and beloved games, Homeworld and Homeworld 2, with the intent of making them accessible on today's leading digital platforms," said Gearbox at the time of the acquisition.
